They only ever show the highlights but plenty to like!

Do the work, listen and learn - we might have a real (midfield?) player here!

I really like the young core of players we are putting together, plus the coaching, development and facilities. We just need to be a little patient (difficult for a Saints supporter!) as the players develop physically and get AFL game time. Players like Pou and Wilson who can justify a spot and physically cope with the demands of playing every game in their first year are pretty rare.
And we have to hope that the young player re-sign. Pou, Wilson, NAS

Great stuff TheJackal
What number is Carroll? I think I heard 19.

Can you confirm?

On SM-S908E using BigFooty.com mobile app

Carroll has taken Hayes' number (18) - at least for the sessions Ive watched. Can't 100% confirm, but would seem strange to change it at this point.

Macrae is in 6 vacated by Ross.

I haven't noticed any other players changing their number from last year

Some thoughts on today’s training:
. Liam O’Conell has come a fair way since this time last year
. Max Hall continues to impress with his movement & ball use
. Keeler moves like Nas…effortless, very dual sided which is unusual for a guy 198cm
. Ball movement a massive focus
. Jack Carrol has good acceleration in first few metres, moves well & a lovely kick
. Garcia’s work rate, even at training is a standout
. Aries 40 metre bullets on show
. Mattaes lean & hungry
. Gus McLennan and Hastie will be banging on the door for Jimmy’s spot

I’ll be going to the time trial Monday so will give a report after that

This is him now
Did he get that little number from your eponymous store, "Tommy's Wigs?"

Stav’s Top 5 players that need to go to another level this offseason & next season

1. Max King - Self explanatory. The size is now there. But he needs to do more work than he ever has on the track. It is time. No excuses from here.

2. Phillipou - No secret we went to another level when he came back and took his game to another level. We now need a season of 25 disposals and goal each week.

3. Owens - Membrey gone. Poor season (although he still had some impact). He has to become the man alongside max in our fwd50

4. NAS - time is now. He needs to go from a very good half back. To challenging Sinclair in output. 22 next year and a big contract negotiation to take place.

5. Wilson - a lot to like about his first season. BUT only got to 25 touches once. (Yes it was THAT GAME) We’ve seen the ceiling. We need to see year on year improvement. 15 touches in 24. Needs to be 20 in 25 and hopefully with a. Goal a game.

Or as "Captain Blood" Jack Dyer once famously said, "There's plenty of good if they're time enough
Here's another good one....heard it during the season.

Jack Dyer hated Collingwood so much.....he refused to watch black and white movies.

Which is all he had for most of his life.

;);)

Mine would be
King - 50+ goals
Caminiti 30+ goals
Hunter Clark - play the whole year and average 20+
Steele - back to all a seasons
Howard - just become reliable and rarely beaten

For me those are the areas we need lifts in and the players who have scope for far better seasons than they have been having

It's a make or break year for Clark. Just has to put it altogether. The midfield is now at the stage were a lot will go past him. Garcia is the one I'm excited about. Keep thinking about that run down tackle on Holmes.

Good list. You could probably add all of our forwards, but I would especially say Sharman. I'm biased, but I think he can be our own Bayley Fritsch. He just needs to find some consistency. I don't want to see him being subbed out again next year for having no impact, especially after he has shown what he can do at his best against Essendon this year. 40+ goals and plenty of assists would be great.

I played golf with an Irish guy here in Dubai yesterday. Afterwards I just casually mentioned my club at home had just signed an Irish kid from Gaelic football. He immediately jumped in before I finished what I was saying as he knew all about it.

Reckoned from what he’d heard that the kid had been earmarked as a special talent from a young age. And that he didn’t begrudge what the kid had done at all.

What he was angry about is that the Irish game is amateur but still almost demands professional standards. So they will keep losing promising young guys like Armstrong.

Other than the joy of the game there is not much keeping young guys playing. He thinks it needs to have some payment. Although he doesn’t think it will happen.

100% This. The GAA is a disaster, and as bad as the Irish government itself. They make an absolute fortune too, hand over fist.
They could easily make the game professional, they have been given everything by the people to put those measures in place. But they're too busy greasing their bank accounts and exploiting good will to give a f*CK about that. They've been able to play the "Poor me" card with the big bad AFL stealing their precious children bullshit for far too long..and for a long time the public over here have bought into that rhetoric. It reached a peak when a few of the Irish lads broke their AFL contracts and went crying home....but that's changed a bit in the last while. People aren't giving the GAA the free pass they've enjoyed since the beginning. Rugby and Soccer have hurt them, more than they're letting on. Both if which are obviously professional.
Zach Tuohy (who seems an okay guy) was on about the exact same thing with regards to the GAA and players leaving for greater opportunity.
Ireland is in s*it too. There's not much scope for upwards economic mobility or stability if you're young. If you want to get somewhere playing sport, then the GAA 'aint it.

I honestly knew nothing about the situation in Ireland. Just repeating what my Irish friend told me. I was actually taken aback at his response in blaming the people that run the sport. He was very supportive of these young guys looking to better themselves. Was a bit of an eye opener. I’ll see him again this week so will quiz him a bit more.

Isn’t all major sport “amateur” in Ireland?

They develop good soccer players but they move over the border to play as they are professional in Scotland and England.

Sarah Rowe the Irish girl that plays for Collingwood also made comments into its Amateurs status in regards to the AFLW possibly being moved to an earlier start

If the AFLW comp is to start early all the Irish girls have to consider where to play as the GAA competition is played at the same time as what the AFLW is proposing as the timeslots

Amateurs or Professionals, big decisions for them

I'm looking forward to hearing updates today from whoever can make it to training. Next 10 years are looking promising with all of the young talent. I haven't been this happy with our list for a long time.

Training today

Observation - 25/11/24 New
I was walking the dogs this morning down at the beach when Tarryn Thomas came past jogging with an older guy following on a bike.

As with many of today’s players he’s quite thin, at first glance in the light rain and wearing a dark top and shorts I thought it was Brad Hill. I have no idea when he’ll be cleared to play again but he’s miles off the pictures being posted off our guys. While they seem to have put on some size and have come back looking fit and ready to go TT seems to have lost size and conditioning.

Looked a forlorn figure in stark contrast to Ugle - Hagen at the ammos ground a couple of weeks back where a jog and kick turned into a kick to kick and autographs with the kids.
