Training report 29/11/24 New
Travaglia 5, Dodson 38, Boyd 50, Barrat 28. Elwood wearing 39. Boxshall has 33 and 37 looks like Said. 39 is Elwood, Tauru isn't out there.
Hammer, Wood, Max Windy in rehab group, surprise surprise Jones in rehab group running with Stocker.
Elwood with the recruits, nice size.
Thought Boyd was Battle when I first saw him. Big boy, moves well.

Got buttonholed by a supporter so didn't watch the drills too much.

Recruits plus Elwood doing their own training. Barret is well proportioned.
Watched Carroll for a bit, another football ready body.
Had to leave early so no details on drills.

Training scare 29/11/24 New
Hugo hurt during running. Walked back then tried again, 300m in went down again- angry and hurt AF. Thought it was cramp at first but was punching the ground in anger. Plenty of trainers around him, looks very proppy but at least up walking now.

Sounds like Keeler is the one to watch. Would love him to come in as a forward/ruck role. Ross has been chomping for a decent player in that role.

Hoe about in Battle's role? There is a spot now open in the best 22. Ari or Keeler both give us something different. It could ease Keeler in playing behind the ball.

Hopefully nothing too serious.

I’m gonna take a punt and say Jones is in the rehab group, because he’s probably on some form of modified program.

It’s worth being conservative with him at this point, consider considering he’s had so much trouble with soft tissue injuries.

Hopefully nothing too serious.
If it’s something moderate to nasty - and I’m really hoping it’s bloody not - it’s better now than either just before or mid-season.

Regardless, put him in the rehab group for a couple of sessions, and be conservative with him at this point in the year.

Training report 29/11/24 - replaces scare New
Hopefully nothing too serious.
Walking a lap now, hoping it's just a serious cramp. Limping a bit, left leg I think. Maybe just wanted 6 weeks off over Christmas instead of 4. He seems ok, the ground where he punch 4 times could need replacing as reports coming through its already yellowing off and not in a good way.

Edit: doing a slow 100m run through now. Sorry to worry everyone, if I have to live through it so do you guys!

I think there is a massive chance the Bolton thing is being considered way too much.

When Ross came back he said he had learned a lot since leaving both us and Freo and said he effectively would not be coaching the exact same way.

Bolton coached Tuohy in 2016, no reason to believe he hasn't improved from the first year of his first permanent senior coach role. A lot of water under the bridge on that one

Apparently one of the reasons why Bolton left Collingwood was that Bolton and Leppitsch did not get along and Leppa ultimately won the battle.

Trust Ross to get him in line. All my Carlton supporting mates reckon BB strength is nurturing young talent so hopefully things align well for us.

Didn’t get there till 10.30am so here’s my 5 cents worth:

First thing that struck me as soon as I got there was the energy & voice - fantastic!

Bolton and Enright ran the drills - Bolton very vocal and engaged. RTB observing most of the time from the middle

Pou looking to continue where he finished off last season - fantastic - probably taking everyone on maybe too much but maybe that’s the instruction - the turnaround since he came back from Sandy is incredible.

Macrae - don’t worry about him - he will get 25+ every week - professional

Steele looked to be moving very well.

Collard much more engaged & seems enthusiastic

Reckon the penny is close to dropping for Keeler (hopefully) -seems more engaged & stronger.

In the drills they kept giving the ball to Ari (for obvious reasons) - looks fitter no doubt - I’m still not convinced re his speed but let’s see.

Maybe I’m a bit harsh but I thought Owens was fumbly.

Boyd - what a physical specimen - don’t know how good a footballer he is yet but if he is happy to be a crash and bash type player if Ro is hurt or needs a chop out then he will give us something. Also he ran laps with Bynes and JWeb and kept up to the last lap so he is definitely fit.

The draftees worked separately from the main group (with Harvey or Carroll?) a fair way from me but they all seemed to kick the ball well including Dodson. They all ran laps at the end - Travaglia easily the quickest/fittest. Still very slight but that just takes time. Barratt and Peckett both seemed to be a bit off the pace with their running.

You don’t win Premierships in November but a lot to like today - I really think we are building something - might take a couple more years but I’m very positive we are on the improve (fixture and injuries permitting!)

Thanks Cobra. Do you see Boyd in a similar way to Kieren Briggs from GWS? Briggs does a good job with his frame and strength to nullify more skilled opposition rucks.

Hard to know as they didn’t do any centre square work when I was there - what I do know is that he looks very strong (if perhaps a few centimetres short of some of the taller ruckman)

Nah this is wrong. The coaches sent him to the VFL for 2 months specifically to work on ground balls and being first to the ball, rather than always opting to tackle

One thing he’s always been is a fierce competitor, just needs to learn the craft
Tackling a player is always easier than winning first ball by reading and /or predicting where the ruck contest ball will be going .

The tagger just has to watch his man, keep close to him, and be alert to tackling him when he wins the ball.

Winning the first ball well from al ruck fuel is much harder and is an art, and some players just cannot develop that instinctive ball winning judgement. True gun mids are rare for this reason.

Burst pace, or the lack of it, then decides if they become more of a ball pig, or a mid that looks to burst away with the ball.

Dodson was the slowest runner of the new guys, i'd like to see Dodson, Cordy and Heath in a 200 metre dash, might take them 5 minutes but the result would be interesting. :D

Ari to take Bonners role. Great for supercoach!

Loving the Boyd wraps. VFL team will be immensely better with him in it i am thinking and by the sounds of it he will give senior selection a shake. With the new ruck rules, you need a big gorilla like Xerri or Meek to get it done. Boyd is in the same mould and could be solid gold.

Owens
Sharman
Pou
King
Collard
Henry - injury a worry though

I think we’re going to get a lot more out of these guys this season compared to last. Significantly more.

Even Dow, Jones and Clark have upside if they can stay fit. Dow is no world beater but he hasn't looked as good as the player he was at Carlton so far. Don't think HC has had a decent injury run in 5 years and Jones showed that he still has something about him late in the season.

Just getting a fit King and Butler would be a significant improvement.

Said is #33 & Boxhall #37

. Mattaes outstanding today..definitely covers the ground quicker since fining down his body
. Max King huge now, his upper body significantly bulked up
. Travaglia is like a whippet…like Wilson just effortlessly runs at pace for sustained periods
. I’d be surprised if Boyd makes the cut
. Keeler again impressed with his agility and skill
. The kicking again was impressive
. Intensity high but no injuries which was a plus
. Caroll, O’Connell and Max Hall will likely debut in ‘25…all looking good
. Gus McLennan was terrific today with his intercepts & one grab marking…one to watch as a lockdown defender
