The difference is Boyd wasnt on our list when I was discussing him.

Now if Boyd suceeds I will be the first the concede how very wrong I was. Time will tell I guess I still have strong doubts. My beef with picking up Boyd was discussed before the National Draft and I was concerned we would be over looking quality kids to fit him in. As it turned out we passed on Hofmann and didnt take Cole or Peckett, so that left list positions for players like Dodson (huge potential ruckman) & Said then to grab Boyd as a rookie. Its a lot different to considering taking him as a National Draft choice.

You might recall I was skeptical of Adrian Cole as a prospect, said I wouldnt take him and copped ridicule because of it. Plenty on the forum thought I was nuts and had NFI what was I was talking. I think I was well vindicated when he was completely over looked in both drafts by all clubs. Elwood Peckett was also but at least the club have continued to work on his development brought him into the fold at Sandringham and would think he is a MSD chance if we have any LTI's.

I also had strong discussions with some re Smiley's game, as some touted him as a definite No 1 pick which I questioned. As it turned there is talk that the Saints werent even going to take him if he fell through to our picks. Footy is a subjective topic, I have strong views at times because I want the best out of all our players and sucess for the club.
Cole is training with the Roos.

His Gippsland coach said he had hardly touched the weights in his junior years, for me thats a bit of a red flag. But it may have been more his family circumstances than his motivation. He doesnt have a big frame but he doesnt rely on strength as a part of his game. Dalrymple and the club rated him highly lets hope he can fulfill that potential.

Well on the upside, now that he is in a professional system, once he starts full training his body is going to get a lot stronger.

There have been a number of draftees with man-bods who enter the AFL and then get brought back to the field as their peers bodies get developed and catch -up physically.

What about when Langford and Sulzberger finished bottom 5 in the 20m sprint at the combine after you insisted that they were fast and called me a “poor judge of talent” for saying otherwise?😂😂😂

You ain’t as SteeleSaints as you think you are

Stick to your guns and go with your instincts & gut feel..not all are going to agree but that’s ok!

Alix Tauru is one of the youngest in his draft year. That can be pretty significant in terms of development. Going to be a while before we really see too much from him. Still growing by the sound of it. Hard to say what can be expected this coming season. Not too much I would imagine.

Yep nothing wrong with having a strong alternate view. I happen to disagree with SteeleSaints on this one, think Boyd can be an adequate AFL ruckman and a good foil for Roh. Time will tell.

Would be a boring old place if we all agreed all of the time.

Thanks Joffa I whole heartedly agree there are a thousand different ways to look at footy and get results. We are all not going to agree. You have seen Boyd training and in match sim quite a lot, you seem pleased with what he might bring, so lets hope it translates.

Anyway all the best for Xmas and the New Year everyone, hopefully 2025 is a brilliant year for our club! :santa:

The reality with Boyd is that none of us really know what to make of him. He's a very unusual size, short for a ruck but stocky. He has dominated the SANFL which is a very good competition. I suspect he will play the practice games and they'll make an assessment on him then. If he looks good I think he'll play AFL footy this year and they'll try to use Marshall as a bit of a utility.

At this stage I think it's unclear how effective he'll be at AFL level but we will definitely be given the opportunity to find out.

The concerning stat for me is marks. Averaged 2 a game this year in the SANFL. By comparison Marshall averaged around 6 this year in the AFL. That would clearly be an area he needs to work on. He seems to get a lot of the footy, wins plenty of hit outs and tackles a lot too.

Will definitely be an interesting one to watch this year.

I think this is closest to the truth. A youngster with stress fractures, likely still growing will be given time. If he's up to it then maybe a couple of games late in the season to give him a taste, but any more than that would be a surprise to me.

I haven't seen anything of Boyd but the few moments TC spent rucking this year is enough to convince me that having a big physical presence that can hold his ground and win a few taps is generally better for our mids than what Ro is capable of. Ro's general play is elite but it's been tried to death and isn't gonna take us forward.

Very binary view point. See where it lands and don't judge too quickly. If Ro is to play big forward line minutes then something has to give.
If we have our best ruck playing big minutes forward where he is exceptionally average and having either of the other rucks on our list as the main guy, I hope it's the coaching panel that gives

Reminds me of when Jack Hayes came on board. Nobody seemed to know what position he was going to play. He was different and an inbetween build but he showed very early on that he could play. Very disappointed that his career was cut short due to injury

I think I can safely say that’s never going to happen 🤣
