Hey fellas. Just watched James Van Es train with us today, looked in pretty good nick. Just after some thoughts on his game and what he did/didn’t show at the Saints? I know he spent the last 18 months with an ankle injury which doesn’t make it easy to comment but any thoughts on what he showed/didn’t show initially would be appreciated.

Hope you blokes stay injury free during the preseason, Boxshall is a ripper and Travaglia was my favourite player in the draft, you did very well.
JVE is a good size but I found him to be a bit slow & fairly limited in his ability in the air…he may be just a lockdown defender but he’s only young so hard to say if he’s got a future at senior level

Ran a 2.91s 20m that’s outstanding, especially for a big man. Pretty useless if you can’t use it on the field though.

What to do when a fan of the Eagles, whom I loathe ardently, comes on here so polite and reasonable?

Cheers for the JVE feedback, even to the posters that think I’m a shit bloke because I support West Coast. Will be keeping a close eye on Tobie and Hugh, big fan of Jimmy Barrat too. Go well and someone remind the boys not to have a slash in public.

He was unlucky with his ankle, which he had pinned then had troubles and had the pins removed. Then by the time he got going he was delisted.

Our list had been bogged down by players stymied by injuries so he paid the price. I thought he had something to offer, but we have been desparate for a young KPD for sometime.

Having said the above Barrat is definitely a significant upgrade.

Given Trav and Windy didnt run the first one, the big improver there is Byrnes.

Good to see him keep pushing to improve.
Reckon Byrnes is the modern day Geary, gives absolutely everything to the team, will probably end up captain at some stage

Wasn’t going to add anything else but is the view of the majority of the board that he was delisted too early, especially for a KPD?

I think a lot of people were surprised when he was delisted. Most fans I had convos with prior to it including me were of the view that he was either deserving of another year or he'd be extremely stiff to be delisted

In the end, he is one of the victims of our brutal list turnover

For a team like West Coast that lacks quality and can afford to take on some recycled players especially with Barrass leaving and Gov close to the end, I think its well worth the punt as long as he stays fully fit over this pre-season and has shed some kgs

His ankle is going to be long term cooked from a high performance point of view. This is going to be fine for a lock down defender but Lyon and Enright want a running game plan and he just wont be able to provide that as much as is required.

Just my theory anyway.

Probably. He wasn't even on our radar for delisting so it was a surprise to all. We can only speculate the club believed his ankle was shot, but by the same token he didn't necessarily demonstrate enough to survive the hard cull.
As others have said, Barrat is definitely a better footballer so the ends have justified it for us.
I think everyone would wish JVE well though. If he gets back, he'll have earned it.

On one hand, maybe since it's hard for a KPD to show their worth in only two seasons. But on the other, it's reasonable to delist someone who just hasn't been able to get on the park. He barely played and barely trained so to have any genuine assessment on him during his time in the AFL is just guess work.
