Steady on fella…it’s a 5 minute a quarter chop out.. you don’t think he cops it as a forward?
Might enjoy the freedom of running around without 2 or 3 players hanging off him

It would be great for his development and might really free him up to attack games. The only question is whether he would have the tank to manage the extra workload.

Just a few question marks around his athleticism

Understand it was his first year last year but his running and general fitness levels looked like he had a looooong way to go

Was giving me serious "Brandon White running in treacle" vibes when chasing a few times
The mention of Brandon White just triggered my PTSD of the “glory” days of the old “Long White Rice” backline gags on here. What a time

I also agree with this…I just wish the club had the balls to use King as the chop out ruckman, he & Ro would a be dangerous combination

King doing all the fwd line rucking ala tom hawkins is what we should be doing.

King did it a bit under ratten (even in games where both ryder and marshall were playing) and showed even back then he could hold his own.

We desperately want one of Heath or Boyd to demand selection as a first ruck and play Marshall forward. Whether one of them can do enough over the next couple of months to achieve that is yet to be seen.
Heath looks like he's still 12 months off and that's if he makes it. Perhaps a couple of games later in the season.
Boyd's chances real great, though we can hope.

King has looked pretty average in the times I’ve seen him doing any rucking. He’s never had the body strength for it. Possibly never had the competitiveness either. Unless he has gained a heap of weight, I’d be leaving him purely forward.

It does look as though he’s put on some size though so we will see.

As for the protecting your assets notion, I think it’s overstated. We’ve seen via Daniher types who were wrecked by injury, that stints in the ruck is not the issue.

I don’t think Ro is cut out to be a permanent forward , but resting forward for 5 or so minutes a quarter works well - upsets the oppo defence, gives our forward line a different shape and freshens up Ro mentally.

I’d love to find out if giving King 5 mins a quarter in the ruck similarly gives us a different look that also frees up Max and gets him into the game when he’s been bogged down for a period. The issue comes up that there also needs to be a ‘plan b’ for when Ro needs a rest but King is dominating up forward and we don’t want to move him.

Personally I’d like to see Marshall ‘resting’ forward more and us playing a 2nd ruck, like Heath or Boyd, as against having all of Max Cooper Hammer and Owen’s in the team. I don’t see a spot for Caminiti at this stage, unless it’s in defence, but I don’t think they’ll send him there.

I tend to agree as much as I hope Shoenmaker is up to the job at CHB I have my doubts at this stage in his development. I hold concerns Shoey's lack of a defensive game and contested marking is going to get exposed in a key position role. On last years form he was not ready and IMO Caminiti should be trained for the role. I know we recruited Barrat to step into a key defensive role, but like Shoey he also will need time.

I understand Hammer is an important cog in our forward mix, but I think he can be filled with other players and would really blossom down back. For team stability I think we would gain more with Caminiti's intercept marking and defensive game in defence, while other players find their feet for the season. Depending on team balance return Hammer to CHF when the others are ready to step up to the role.

I know Keeler is an unknown at the top level, but I think he is one whose attributes will translate well at the top level. So I would take a gamble and try Keeler forward and as a 2nd chop out ruckman OR as you mentioned play another ruckman with Marshall predominantly forward. Heath has shown he is quite good when resting forward he can take a good grab and apply some decent pressure. Boyd is also and unknown at this stage. Who knows by the start of the year Tauru might be up and flying and start the year as a tall HFF and help fill the void of losing Hammer to defence.

Some have suggested we cant play all of King, Caminiti, Sharman and Owens in the same F50 which is an interesting call. Sharman and Owens both play like tall flankers rather than keys. Both are quite mobile, work hard both ways and apply decent pressure. At times in games when they can get isolated one on ones out the square they might look like key position players but thats just part of the rotation as the games progress.

Given the recent practice intra club games RTB is keen to give Shoey the first bite at CHB, be interesting to see how that unfolds.

Peak insanity and stupidity to want to move one of the best rucks in the comp to the forward line where they are exceedingly average.

Nothing is set in stone and it a bit over the top to think thats the case. As an example if we start a game with Boyd/Heath rucking and Marshall forward and it obviously not working how hard is it to change it? It doesnt take a constitutional referendum to make the change!

Its the exact reason why targetting De Koning as a free agent would be huge for the club to benefit from both his and Rowans strengths!

Sure. Let’s use our blue-chip forward asset, who has had a chequered injury history so far, in a position that going to see him get physically battered regularly.

Just because someone is tall does NOT mean they can or should ruck.

Depends. If he doesn't step up we might need to create a role to bring him into the game.

Marshall normally plays out 85-90% of the game.
No way i want us to pay up DeKoning kind of cash for the 8 to 12 minutes Marshall isn't in the ruck.

As a forward , Marshall is probably at a similar level to Sharman.

Big Max has done an enormous amount of running in the off season..

Great, because irrespective of where he plays he needs a better tank that he was showing last season.

He started last season with two games where he pushed up to the wings as a marking target and played well.

He needs to play like this most weeks, and irrespective of whether he is playing as a forward or forward chop out ruck.

Indeed our whole team needs to be able to run well as it is a point that the Club is seeking to be better than all other clubs as a competitive advantage. Any weak links in this will eat away at this.
