This is what people would like to see
"Reef McInnes – again training down back, McInnes seems to have adapted to the role seamlessly. Competed very well in the air and is balanced at ground level and was already directing teammates behind the ball."

Why do we keep seeing “Fin Macrae dominated again” in training on fox footy articles?

Every year he dominates in training until we get into it come season time.

It never translates into anything meaningful in the first team

He kinda has to if he wants to crack in to the . Will it translate to anything on field? Maybe not.

I’d rather hear him burning the track than what we got from AJ a couple of years ago.

Nick is 22 in 23 days...

So it's disingenuous to compare Reef in age to Nick when they're 21 days apart in age, but not disingenuous to compare Reef to Beau McCreery who's 20 months older than Reef.

It's kinda disingenuous to use age at all in this scenario given the further context I provided.

In the end, Reef was drafter a year earlier than Nick. He's been "in the system" an entire season longer and was drafted in the same year as Beau who established himself in the starting lineup by the end of 2022.

Reef was also recruited as a midfielder so he can't even fall back on the "talls take time" get out of jail card because he's technically a midfielder and midfielders are generally ready quicker.

Mind you, this all comes from someone who has been basically staunchly in Reef's corner from the start. I reckon he's been hard done by when it comes to being given a chance to actually establish himself properly.

It’s funny how Reef and Nick are the same age but people seem to think Reef is some failed 25yo

He's not being viewed as a 25 year old. Kids drafted at 18 don't usually get to the age of 25 to become a senior regular. That's just the industry. He's lucky to have gotten a 5th year, not many do without being senior regulars. Not having been signed until after trade week suggests he was pretty close to losing his spot. But he's got some elite tools, so like Markov and Frampton he's been given more time to become AFL standard than most get. Hopefully he makes the most of it.

To be fair to Fin he did actually dominate the intra club last year but in hindsight it was more of a warning of how far behind our midfield was heading into those early rounds of 2024
I got chastised for saying this last year, but I'm a glutton for punishment - an intraclub is far closer to VFL than AFL standard. Half the players in it are VFL players and most of the other half aren't going at close to their AFL intensity.

Mitchell is literally the one player we didn’t need getting injured again

Definitely puts a dent in my Premiership prediction

If having almost the entire season off didn’t help then I don’t see him playing any kind of role next season

Hope Allan steps up

Not literal at all. Every bit of wood on the planet needs to be touched if you name the one player and the "I" word together. Same for the second guy - also not Titch, but he and the I word have had a glorious divorce, after a passionate affair in their early days.

I just don't happen to agree that reef has stunk it up in his limited game time

I don’t think he has either

Quite the opposite in fact

However the coaching group don’t seem to think he’s done a whole heap either

This is slightly disingenuous because while Reef is technically 21, he's 22 in 2 days lol

He was drafted a year before Nick and was in the same draft as Beau McCreery. Beau was taken at pick 44. Reef at pick 23 and was highly touted.

Both Nick and Beau are premiership players and have made themselves key members of the 23.

I don't think it's completely unfair to judge Reef against his literal contemporaries who have gone waaaaay past him.
Not really. There’s a matter of a few weeks difference between the two. The most that could be argued is that Reef has an extra year of AFL development under his sleeve but that probably offset by the development lost in his draft year, in addition to him being played as a tall which typically has a longer development curve. Beau was drafted as a mature ager too.
