I really hope this last ditch effort to turn Reef into something works out

If he turns into a defender than it’s probably ideal given our lack of youth in the taller back department. At 194 he can play small key back. Basically replaces Murphy. Might even be taller than Murphy is?
Yeah a little bit taller than Murphy who was 192

I took it as that was him trying to Replace Murphy

AJ plays forward.
Take this as gospel - I have been told AJ is still struggling with social media barrage which is still lingering and affecting him.
My source - it’s impeccable ( not AJ) and told to me directly from someone with intimate and daily involvement with the squad.

I had high hopes but not expecting much now from AJ.

I'm a little concerned that Reef's problem with that role will be his decision making - he looked good in the Frankston game from memory, when he got the ball and charged forward, looked a bit lost when he needed to deliver it. Guess he'll get a chance in the VFL to build on his decision making and disposa
With his attributes I hope he could develop some James Clement type style to his game in defence
He has the athleticism. Just needs to improve his one on one strength and competitiveness

I’m hoping he gets the occasional rotation through the middle. Just a few minutes every now and again

Doesn’t come across as a vigorous type. Running, receiving and delivering may be his go.
definitely running and recieving, getting involved in chains of play, using his speed to dash up the ground and deliver into F50

That’s like saying you hope Sullivan develops Buckley like style.

Pre-season training - Friday. Week 1.

Last session of week 1, and it was very solid.
A good selection of the boys out there on a lovely morning to top off the week.

  • Maynard
  • Mitchell
  • Schultz
  • Houston
  • Pendles
  • McStay
  • Perryman
  • Demattia
  • Cameron
  • Allan
  • Frampton
  • Fin
  • TJ
  • Smit
  • Steene
  • Hill
  • Ryan
  • Reef
  • Moore
  • Beau
  • WHE
  • Sullivan
  • Markov
  • Johnson
  • Dean
  • Long
  • Parker

There was transition work as they worked through stoppages and ball movement.
No full ground match sim yet, probably in the following weeks as the whole squad comes back. But there was line groups stuff going on.

Reef trained fully in defence, which we saw parts of on Monday, but every drill, every match ground stuff, all from the backline where he really looked good. The way he used his attacking flair and pace to move, reads the ball well and used the ball nicely to hot targets. He was up against Smit.

Fin was with the forwards, rotating half forward while coming up to stoppage and moving up the ground. Not sure if this is temporary or not. But he was impressive, looked like he is stronger as he was hard to contain to tackle.

Steene was serving as he ruck that went against Cameron, as Smit was pretty much used as a FF.

Ryan did some good 1%'s in the defensive half

While at the start of the session there was lots of running with a number of players, at the end of the session there was more conditioning to be done with a select number of players.
Looked like Frampton, McStay, Reef in one group, DeMattia, Allan, Ryan, TJ and then bunch of others. Reef did very well, he led his group through most of session. Allan and Ryan were the (unsurprisingly) the last men standing

Thanks Jen!

And, by the way, who was it who laughed and spat in my face - metaphorically -- when I suggested that he should be tried down back?

Who wants to confess?!

Was it me

I never remember when I hang shit on people 🤔

Considering he already played games down back last year it must have been someone who doesn't watch the VFL.
And someone unaware that he played a lot of his junior footy in defence.

It should be unsurprising he looks more natural down back to anyone who is aware of his junior development.
