Got along for a short bit today, but not much to talk about. Some of the senior blokes have the option of taking another 1 or 2 weeks off and most exercised that right.

Interested that all of the rookies from last year were there, including Hamill and that Moody was there also. I didn't really do a roll call, but I didn't see Brennan (but that was to be expected).

Sounds about right. The rookies did show enough and most of them would be kept you'd think.

Also if Brennan does walk on top of Hadley leaving (and Fixter & Allan already gone), there may not be a massive need to cut more people any more. People like Moody and Garner may get a reprieve depending on how things go.

The Vodafone Brisbane Lions returned to the training track today less than two months after the curtain fell on their 2007 AFL campaign.

Players with less than three years experience returned from a short break to begin their preparations for the 2008 season.

They will be joined by the players with between four and seven years in the competition next week while the more senior members of the team (eight years or more) are due back in the first week of November.

Co-captain Jonathan Brown was a surprise visitor to the session, joining in the warm-up with his team mates before returning to his final week of holidays.

Lions Senior Coach Leigh Matthews commented prior to the session that the next few months will focus more on the development of each player than the team as a whole.

“It’s very much about the individual for the next couple of months,” Matthews said.

“It’s very little about the team and much more about getting each individual as prepared as we possibly can given what their strengths are and what their vulnerabilities are and try to make them a better football athlete.”

“One of the individualisations of players is that we might want to markedly increase their endurance base. There are other players that we want to increase their strength and size but you can’t do both at the same time.”

“The players that you would like to get a little big stronger at this stage of their career have a heavier gym load and a lighter endurance running load,” he said.

“If you’re going to run your guts out every second day, then you’re not going to beef up a lot.”

Belgian, Brennan wouldn't have been there as he's one of the senior blokes now.

You're right. I asked Leigh about it just as I was leaving and he said the same thing, but I couldn't remember the brackets.

I meant to take the camera but plain forgot. Make yours is charged Chez!

Re: Rookies Training yesterday - can somebody correct me, but Corrie and Hamill have to be promoted in order to be part of the club? I thought 3 years is the max a player can remain a rookie - hence Hamill. Does Begley fit that category or are International Rookies exempt? Was Pierce Hanley (new Irish rookie) training?
