Congratulations to Old Brighton on their win yesterday, they played better finals football than Trinity and deserve the premiership. It was a fascinating game with both teams wanting to play the game on their terms; Old Brighton came out early and were clearly trying to intimidate the younger and smaller Trinity players. To their credit the Trinity players matched Brighton and as they should have, after all it is finals football. At various times during the game Trinity managed to wrestle the game back onto their terms, playing with run, carry and skill. But Trinity could not sustain it for four quarters; the blustery conditions and the increased tempo of finals made Trinity's game style one of high reward but also high risk. Brighton played with intensity and commitment for four quarters and undoubtedly in the last quarter reaped the benefits of the previous week off. Trinity need to take some tough lessons from the game and being a young side undoubtedly will benefit from the experience. In spite of yesterday's result, I would predict that Trinity will fair better in A grade next year. Their running style more closely reflects that in the premier division and they will only improve over the pre-season. Brighton however struggle when running teams get their game on and appear to have an ageing list. I'm sure that is the last thing on their mind now though as they bask in their success.
