Being more of a 'B' grade follower these days with De La, I'm keen to understand the demise of Caulfield this season? Is it easily identifiable the cause of their woe? Or just a season to forget?

With Caulfield returning to B, will we see an immediate rebound as they are a class above the grade below (Like the snow dogs) or like my club, it's the perfect time to reset and rebuild and get back to A when we can be more than competitive.

Interested in peoples thoughts.
My understanding is they lost top end and young talent to other VAFA clubs or local leagues for cash.

Because the VAFA, here there's no cash. No cash in the VAFA.

I'm also interested to see if the OXAFL coach lasts the season if they lose to Old Melburnians this week. The club is at the crossroads with no top end talent in sight and a younger brigade who are not up to it.

Some great points there re OX, $100,000.00 for 6 wins doesn’t really cut it! IF OM’s win this week, it puts OX firmly in the drop zone.
Regarding their talent, they’ll bring in a foreign legion next year like they always have and be super competitive.

My take is too many scholarships ala Old Haileybury, lots of country kids who go home after schooling etc.
Other than last weekend they’ve been pretty competitive, they only lost to the awesome Collegians by 5 goals or so goals recently.
B grade seems pretty weak compared to 10 years ago, they’ll survive at that level.

From the two games I've seen Caulfield play this year against Collegians I have noted a few things:

  1. Their list is incredibly young at senior level, which has mainly been caused by blokes in their mid 20s from last year's senior side going to play in the country for money and their older blokes / club stalwarts retiring at the end of last year. It was quite remarkable when I saw them run out onto the Trott when we first played them as to how young they were compared to the Collegians boys playing that day.
  2. Their depth has obviously suffered as a result of 10-15 senior players from last year not playing this year.
  3. They have a crack, but they can't sustain this effort and intensity against bigger bodies as the game goes on.
  4. Their better younger players who have established A section form seem to be VFL listed and in and out at that level, so consistency in team selection hasn't been great.
I'd say God Yeah, they're a bit like De La in that they are likely to go back to B grade and regroup, but I wouldn't be shocked if they came back up, this is just based on the talent pipeline coming through Caulfield Grammar. Their under 19s are 4th in under 19 premier, so they are likely to be a decent B grade side in 2024. I'm sure the recent one sided results against them hasn't been aided by the European summer exodus, although I'm not sure how many blokes from Caulfield have been away.

I believe the OX coach is on a two year deal for 2023 and 2024, is that correct?

I know some Old Xavs followers have told me that they are very young this year and it's evident. As you pointed out, there isn't as much talent at the top end, but I think not having Hannebery play other than the one game where he broke his jaw and Gowers going to the country mid-season probably hasn't aided the fact Old Xavs have a very young list.

It's interesting to note that one thing I have noticed about some clubs, in particular OMs and Old Xavs is that despite incredible depth, they haven't quite hit the levels they would expect in the past few years. As someone astute said to me, those two clubs in particular are the best by a mile over the last 5-10 years in the reserves section, but it seems that the difference between player 10 on their list and player 48 is rather small and interchangeable, where as I know that at a club like Collegians and even a club like Old Haileybury or Uni Blues, with not as many boys coming through as those single sex schools, the standard between player 10 on the list and player 48 can be quite substantial.

Wholeheartedly agree MO. Between 2017 and now OXAFL's list was very strong from player 10-40 in terms of could play the role in the seniors if required. It's the depth that gets you to the finals (SCOTCHVFL), but it will be the star power that wins you flags, ala SKOBAFL and UNIAFL, and COLLEGIANSORMOND this year. OBALUMNI of course always defied the odds.

But right again re Hannebery and Gowers, although I will never knock a bloke for chasing coin in this fiscal climate and uncertainty (like i did myself). Secure the bag and your livelihood then worry about the rest later.

Gowers did not quite “Cut It” this time at XavAFL. They have plenty of talented players now and coming in each year. They probably just need a couple of big bodied players.

I don’t remember old Carey being belted by 380 points across Seniors and Reserves on the same day?
This scholarship model will see them slide down the grades like Old Carey

I genuinely doubt we'll slide like Old Carey.

We'll likely have 2 Under 19 side's next year (first time in club history) and have a group of 19-22 year olds who have has a season of A Grade under their belt. We deserve to go back to B, but the future is still bright.

Our challenge has been sustainable depth and that's why a 2nd U/19 side at a lower level is so important. Otherwise you lose great kids who want to play but can't really cut it at U/19 Premier level.

OC are just too good....win and end the tonners season
SKOB to have their win of the year against OS...slight bias on that one.
Xavs to essentially relegate OMs.
Uni Blues to get the percentage booster
OH to continue their good form

Tips

Collegians to defeat Old Brighton - a danger game for the Lions, they lost to Brighton last time
SKOBs just over Old Scotch - big game in the context of the double chance
Old Xavs to defeat OMs, but no certainty
Uni Blues easily over Caulfield
Old Haileybury to continue their recent good form by defeating Uni Blacks

I'll take these tips as well.

OC's successful APS team (runner up this year) is stacked with Scholarship kids who for the most part hail from the Country. Once school finishes, they are back on the farm and the old boys dont get a look in. As for OX's their domination is over. They havent threatened an A Grade flag for some years. Hi profile recruits of late haven't "stuck". Their methodly is somewhat skewed obviously. As I have said earlier, their "B"s are flying. maybe more input required there to develop the talent they do have???

I believe the OX coach has resigned....any truth?
