I like him forward and ruck , he has something
He's always had "something" but he's coming up for his 7th season on an AFL list and still hasn't locked in a position in the forward line.
A 200cm mobile defender to play on the ever burgeoning number of super tall forwards in the AFL would be handy.

105kg bench is very impressive for someone as slight as Ned. I've been stuck at 85kg bench for what feels like months, and I'm much bigger.

I need access to a Burgo..
No you don't Josh Manuel is your man

Nope, he's either a KPF or a KPD...he's been on the list for too long and never cemented himself up forward, played in defence almost as much as a forward as a junior and with all the super tall forwards coming through I can't see any reason not to try him down back. It's not as though we are flush with quality tall defenders. Quite a few KPF's that were struggling have made a successful career as KPD's. Liam Jones etc.
Who would he replace down back

Did Butts benefit from the compromised covid season where teams were not able train regularly?

Skills all round were not at their best during that period and the lack of training would have impacted the speed of the game.

He seems noticeable slower or his opponents are noticeably quicker.

The short snippets of Keane were quite impressive.

Probably more he benefited by being a relatively unknown factor, seeing he only played two games in '20. '21 also had a level of circumstance to how impressive it was, seeing we lost Talia to a career ending injury.

Whereas what we have now is a developing KPD, one who stalled a bit in 2022, which is not uncommon whilst a lads body catches up to him.

I've been wondering, after that goal from 50, whether Ned might've spent a bit of time on the leg weights over summer (and even late last season since his kicking was already getting longer prior to this season).

I guess Berg could be used when we play sides with 2 x 200cm forwards. We are short down back against those teams

I don't mind the idea. Himmelberg is decently athletic, has always been alright in contested marking situations, and he's never been able to lock down a forward spot.

Nothing lost with that move.

Butts has plateaued ....if not regressed the last 12 months

Who is our anchor in the back half ....it seems Dawson is there to protect Butts
I reacon its more our expectations of Butts that didnt plateau..

He had such a break out season in 2021 where he basically came from nowhere to become our no.1 KPD..

And everyone just instantly expected that he’d be even better in 2022 and then because he didnt turn straight into Daniel Talia in 2022 a fair few marked it down as a fail.

We’re talking about a still very young lad for Key position player here..

Even last friday the knives were instantly out for him within 15 minutes of the start of the game.

But the whole team was off the ball in that first 15 minutes..

WTF does everyone expect.. of course our KPD’s and other defenders are going to struggle when the whole team is performing poorly.. they are the ones that get hammered when that happens.

After that I thought he did well.. beat his opponent several times including two occasions on either wing where he both times spoiled the ball across the boundary stopping his opponent from marking and setting up a stoppage.

It still remains, Butts had 5-6 goals kicked on him ......if we are to progress this year, our KPD's can't be giving away such easy goals

I mean, at least he should be spoiling the ball .....not getting outmarked 30-40 mtrs from goal

Even the best key defenders get outmarked 30-40 meters to goal occasionally, and even the best have bad days at the office. Especially when you have a non-existant midfield presence (which Butts copped in that early period against Taberner).

When it comes to it, Butts is doing a solid job negating so far, averaging 5.6 spoils and a 30.7% loss rate in '22. That said, the biggest lane of improvement for him is offense. He's never going to be that Talia like shutdown player, but up those intercepts and and he'lll be good.

Though, I'd like us to switch Butts/Murray around for a bit, just to see if Muz can become that gorilla KPD.

I like him forward and ruck , he has something

If he couldn't lock that position down in the last couple of years, it's probably a no-go. Especially considering team needs.

A good player to try to reinvent tbh.
