Probably that butts was garbage for a lot of last year and last week
You mean the 1st quarter last week where we were down 11 clearances at quarter time, makes it pretty hard for defenders when there;s a lack of pressure upfield..

Would be hard to argue that Taberner wasn't looking like their most dangerous forward though..

Saw sportsbet are getting stuck into crows fans for overestimating our chances this year based on 1 preseason game. I literally haven't heard anyone, on here or irl, say anything like that. Click bait i assume but why?
There's been a bunch of fans joking on Twitter that they're booking their flights to Melbourne for the GF, but were clearly taking the piss. Wouldn't surprise me if Sportsbet just took it seriously though.

We were down 11 clearances after the 1st qtr ? wow that is slow out the blocks
Hopefully that is an area of improvement we see this year because generally our starts aren't good

Correct 11 clearances down at quarter time.

Hately? Crouch? ROB? We could all turn on Smith?

Murray will probably injure someone on our team or himself every second game, so we can pick on him?

There's just so much opportunity!

Spoon followed by a couple of bottom 6 finishes doesn’t exactly scream a best 22 full of untouchables. That said, nobody gives a crap about average players tooling away in the 2s where they belong. Shipping boy status is reserved for those that continue to get selected despite their performance not warranting it. ROB an early favourite and then there are senior players of they’re just going through the motions or playing injured and poorly.

It’s all of that ….. But it’s also muscular development and strength

That’s why men kick longer than kids

Most AFL players kick it 50m + even if they couldn’t pre playing AFL
Connection must have something to do with it, I can kick a drop kick further than a drop punt, if it comes off right!

Everyone but the coaches are at fault.
VB doesn't full me with a lot of confidence. You can sense the Craig/Campo philosophies in everything he says.

Yep, technique for sure but also increasing muscle strength will help.

With any action, you have a bunch of muscles that help that action, and a bunch of muscles that do the opposite (hinder) to that action. If you're tense and have both sets of muscles active, you're holding yourself back from what you could be capable of if you can relax the opposing muscles. Golf is a good example.

Technique includes building up speed before kicking - as opposed to s stuttering lead up, ending too close to the person at the mark, or trying to kick from a one step.
In golf there is a theory of laws, principles and preferences.
I'll leave the principles and preferences aside for this.

Laws refer to the laws of physics. In the case of kicking a football or hitting a golf ball, the laws of physics are identical. Some physicist can write the equation but here's the long version.

The object is propelled by an external force. In this case, that's Ned's foot. Neds foot has a mass (weight). The bigger the mass, the greater potential force can be applied to the object. Think about two identical hits of a tennis ball. One with a tennis racquet and the second with a squash racquet. In this example, the tennis racquet is heavier and would strike the ball with more force. So does a big heavy leg and foot kick further than Neds chicken legs? Not necessarily...

There is a critical second component of this which is often overlooked. Speed.
The speed of the foot is more important to kicking distance than the mass of the foot. In golf, clubhead speed is double the importance of the weight of the club. Foot speed is a completely different issue to strength. Seed was a super long kick but I bet half the list (or more) could beat him in a leg press.
Speed gets more complicated because leg (lever) length is also a determinant of getting foot speed. It's why most (not all...) short guys aren't long kicks. But no matter how you get there, the speed of your foot is the important thing.

The next issue is the delivery of this energy to the ball. If you strike the ball with your energy directly opposing the weight of the ball, you'll maximise the amount of energy to the ball. If you strike the side of the ball somewhat, some of the energy "leaks" sideways. A good example is why snap shots don't travel as far as a drop punt. With a snap, you foot only strikes about half the weight of the ball and therefore, less energy to the ball.

There are other factors in kicking long such where in the arc of the leg impact occured. Think about the strike point in the arc of a rugby up and under kick compared to an AFL stab pass.

Technique matters greatly in kicking in my view...but if two techniques are identical, the fastest moving leg wins.

On a tangent, just thinking on what our offer to North was at the end of 2021 - from memory it was our 2021 1st, the Melbourne 1st we traded up for and our 2022 1st? - in that case it was Dawson, Rachele and Rankine. JHF would have to become one hell of a player to have meant missing out on those 3 being worth it
If you saw JHF play on the weekend, you'd be foolish to downplay how good this kid will be ......just powerful !

We still would have got Dawson & Rankine ....there are always ways, as other Clubs have demonstrated

He is a very smart Kid, Believe he currently studying BioMedicine to become a Doctor,
That doesn't make him a smart footballer ....in Biomedicine, ROB has more time to think thru a solution .....whereas in sport it's instinctive, and like chess, the best footballers can see the play unfolding 2-3 disposals ahead

Not unique. A lot of people get more distance with a drop kick. Probably not many try nowadays.
Well, we know umpires now classify a drop kick in a contest as incorrect disposal .....still, it was a beautiful skill to behold for the best exponents
