forgive my ignorance, but how would you otherwise train to get more distance in your kick?
its all in the timing. I struggled to kick 50m when I was younger and had to kick the leather off the ball to get it that far. A mate would just lay back and guide a kick 65m and it looked like he put in almost no effort..it really is good ball drop and timing. can they teach that - I suppose?

Yep, technique for sure but also increasing muscle strength will help.

With any action, you have a bunch of muscles that help that action, and a bunch of muscles that do the opposite (hinder) to that action. If you're tense and have both sets of muscles active, you're holding yourself back from what you could be capable of if you can relax the opposing muscles. Golf is a good example.

Technique includes building up speed before kicking - as opposed to s stuttering lead up, ending too close to the person at the mark, or trying to kick from a one step.

Nope, he's either a KPF or a KPD...he's been on the list for too long and never cemented himself up forward, played in defence almost as much as a forward as a junior and with all the super tall forwards coming through I can't see any reason not to try him down back. It's not as though we are flush with quality tall defenders. Quite a few KPF's that were struggling have made a successful career as KPD's. Liam Jones etc.
So you're advocating keeping ROB in and ditching murray?

The basics
Ball drop
timing
connection point between foot and ball and ground
technique with foot and leg
its not as simple as that, but that’s trying to simplify it

edit: available for private tuition $$😉

On a tangent, just thinking on what our offer to North was at the end of 2021 - from memory it was our 2021 1st, the Melbourne 1st we traded up for and our 2022 1st? - in that case it was Dawson, Rachele and Rankine. JHF would have to become one hell of a player to have meant missing out on those 3 being worth it
I wouldn't even take JHF over rankine.

No your the one saying that not me..

All Im suggesting is Himmelberg is coming up for his 7th season on the list and hasn;t nailed down a postion up forward or as ruck or anything else for that matter so nothing lost to try him as a 200cm defender if he's to become a regular best 22 player.'He played both as a forward and a defender coming through the ranks.

I want ROB out. I think the game has moved passed him but he will be selected for round 1. I dont see Murray as best 22 either but think they will pick him for round 1. I see elliott being an emerg for round 1

It’s all of that ….. But it’s also muscular development and strength

That’s why men kick longer than kids

Most AFL players kick it 50m + even if they couldn’t pre playing AFL

Probably would have cost Rachele for sure. I'd say we would have used other picks to get Dawson and we could have used our r1 pick this year for Rankine.

Probably meant we miss out on players like Soligo and Taylor.

Fog went down with an ankle at training today? Anybody know more?

Edit. Just rolled/bruised and not expected to miss trial apparently…

I don’t see any match ups for him in the opposition to try and make him a defender

I don't mind the idea. Himmelberg is decently athletic, has always been alright in contested marking situations, and he's never been able to lock down a forward spot.

Nothing lost with that move.
He wouldn't be the 1st failed forward to carve out a career in defence.
I've been thinking this for ages.

Smith was noticeably out of step with other players. Others were trying to retain composure with the ball, use it constructively.

He's still a throw it on the boot and hoof it long merchant.

Which is a deeply ingrained first instinct for him (and some others) which we'll only move past with selection because he's not learning a new style now
He'll get more selection grace than most others but I agree that he's not contributing at this stage in the way you would hope from a senior player.
Hope it turns around once the four points are up for grabs.

Without checking you are probably correct. But we still clearly did more than most of the other teams.
Professional sport is about continuity, best players pushing through discomfort to keep playing and the same squad playing game after game.
Once a player establishes ability at the level they are pretty much a lock - in all sports
