As well as Soligo, Rachele and Berry.. Captain Dawso says Nick Murray is a big improver this year.
(9news)
Rendell says some ridiculous things , he said Murray is a possible AA 40 man squad player by end of year

Minimal chance Matt , but I do like Murray’s trajectory and think he’s our best key defender

It’s more than that though..

he was underachieving prior to his two years out of the game.

he has never lived up to his first round draft pick status.

Sure, he has shown moments of utter brilliance here and there but he’s just never consistently put it all together and become the dangerous player we all hoped he would.

opposition coaches wouldn’t lose sleep over Wayne..
One good year on the half back flank

Compared to what he looked like early in his career in his first 5 games where he looked electric , definitely a disappointment

Injuries part of the issue but not whole story

as of right now we have one player that opp coaches would lose sleep over - Laird

that is all - maybe tex that's it
Don’t worry.. it’ll soon be;

laird
rankine
rachele
soligo
pedlar
and Mcadam (who will be freed up as their defence has to worry about Rachele and Rankine now and not Rowe and Murphy!)

I reacon coaches would also spend a heap of time wondering how to quell Dawson’s influence on the game.

they’d probably also worry about Murray.. injuring their players through mad as a cut snake acts on the footy field!

Yes, doesn’t seem likely this year, unless a few Victorians suddenly have an epiphany and discover the 2023 Adelaide Crows.
Between Murray and Keane, we may, down the track, put a scare into a few oppo forwards.

I'm more shocked that one of the captains said that Geelong won't make finals this year.
Every chance that could happen ....there's a huge gap between the elderly & the pups .....won't take much for things to derail with GEEL

No chance
After 2021, most experts advised GEEL to rebuild .....they didn't & had an exceptional run with injuries & a new gameplan .......they're yet another year older, their leader retired, and Dangerfield to struggle stringing 14 games together this year

Everyone automatically assumes last years premiers to be favourites again .....a lazy analysis

I think geelongs biggest issue will be motivation..

so many of their older players have spent so many years trying to get that flag.. they finally got it and I reacon that satisfaction from finally getting it will subconsciously see them relax and not care as much about chasing it anymore.

my danger team this year will be the dees.. again I think they took the foot off the pedal in 2022 after winning in 2021..

reacon they’ll come back strong again this year.. they have so many unbelievably good players it’s hard to see them not being right up there..

winning back to back flags is a difficult feat..

even the tigers couldn’t achieve it after 2017.. they had to wait till 19/20 even though their 2018 list was just as good..

2018 they just seemed to not give a big enough shit about it all..

Oh Wayne, you’ve done it again. Misrepresenting the argument. You either have a massive comprehension problem, you’re in such a rush to try and win the debate you don’t take time to read posts or worse you intentionally misrepresent people.

The discussion was on the Cats missing the 8, not being favourites for the flag, that’s a big difference.

The Cats make the 8 every year, when’s the last time they missed? They have a massive home ground advantage. Their older players are still playing good football. They’ve got some talented kids and some good role players. Plus they’ve added Bowes, Bruhn and Henry.

For those reasons the chances of them missing the 8 is highly highly unlikely.

Interesting, that one of the accusations currently being levelled at MELB ....was that they were not as fit, as they should have been .....and failed to run out games strongly

This, 12 months after Burgess had left

Whether Rendell’s got some crappy opinions, you’ve got to respect someone who actually isn’t afraid of giving an opinion

Very happy to give an opinion on other poster's opinions in selection threads though. I guess it's much easier to say that the selectors are always 100% correct if there's no evidence of you thinking differently.

How dare he not immediately come back 100% after missing two years with leg/foot injuries

he wasn't going that great before the injuries. There were 4 full seasons prior to injury and the exciting patch of form off half back was in year 2 or 3. Ignore year 1 and the patch of good form and there's still a lot of meh before the injuries. I reckon he was played out of position, just no good ahead of the ball. But fact is, those that are ruling a line through him have much better evidence than those using preseason match sim to say he's going to be awesome.

that's wrong. Oppo coaches put no time or effort into our mids, they know they rack them up with little hurt factor and back their guys in to do more damage. Dawson, Tex and Fog would be the 3 that would most concern opposition.

edit - that said, late in 2022 there was some definite improvement and a bit more hurt factor hopefully rolling through as we go forward.

In 2022 - Surely it was just Tex, Dawson and Laird that the opposition would put most time into.

In 2023 - I think opposition coaches will go in worried about Rankine, FOG, Walker, Dawson.

2024 - Rachele and Soligo will enter the conversation if they continue their trajectory.

I think you can add Laird, Rachele, McAdam, Berry and Soligo to those 2023 names

Pedlar is another which I think will take the comp by surprise in 2023

Even Keays playing that HHF role is going to cause serious headaches of opposition coaches with his two way hurt running

I sense that Nicks is finally getting the right people in the right positions, and is starting to back in our future generation

Really unless you’re prepared to give your own opinions you’re in no position to criticise others about any opinion they share.

Yes. With Berry and Laird being 1 and 2 in the AFL for tackles in 2022, Soligo with his skill full manner of getting the ball forward, it is going to be the tight reliable midfield to the drive the team. Adding stints by the Rankchele twins is really going to make a midfield to keep oppos coaches awake at night.

I did edit my post prior to reading this and I'm confident that going forward it'll change. But our midfield has historically been accumulators that didn't do much more than hack the ball forward. None of them, despite racking up their mid 30s week in and week out, would cause any concern for opposition coaches.

I don't necessarily think they are favourites to win the flag, but I would be very surprised if they didn't make the 8. They are still a very good team, they will be around the top 4 again.
