If you assume that the best 18 is
Hawkins
Stanley
Stewart
SDK
Blitz
Danger
Duncan
Cuthrie
Jezza
JHenry
Smith
Holmes
Close
Stengle
Miers
Atkins
Bews
Tuohy

Then you basically have
Rohan
Kolo
Zuthrie
Parfitt
Bruhn
Bowes
O Henry
Neale
Menegola
Ceglar (backup for stanley/blitz)
Sav (backup for kolo/j henry)
Moc
Dempsey
Simpson
Clark

Fighting for your last 5 or so spots.
So if you look for next week (26 players) taking into account known outs.

We take our Henry and Hawkins from your 18 to get 16 players

I think the seven ”certainties” include Henry, Bowes (if not injured) Zuthrie, Bruhn, Menegola, Sav, Cegs to get you to the 23.

Now need 3 more.

I think Kolo and Parf get picked…

Last spot They will play Rohan if available (otherwise no game before round 1) - if not Dempsey becomes the pick

Now potentially Duncan and Rohan don’t get up and maybe Bowes has a niggle. So hard to know

Yeah i would leave duncan home (i dont think he needs the run) and take the other 26 incl dempsey.
I would have taken neale if he was fit.
We might rest one or two either players.
I wouldnt take moc but the coaches might.

Amazing a 30 game player already has a stadium named after him, and in Queensland to boot. Guess it was after he slayed Brisbane in last year's Preliminary Final before his injury.

Nice going Max!

These games don't have a point anymore (as compared to the past). I don't know why they just don't start the H&A season two weeks early and just start playing for points from the getgo.
On one hand I agree. As CS said yesterday it would be cool to go into a season blind as a supporter and be surprised (either way)

But I reckon they have got the balance right with 1 pretend and 1 real practice game. For me it gives opportunity to cycle through 26 players for each game (so maybe 28-30 over the two games) and we get to see players in AFL games we wouldn’t round 1

If you think about this year we may not have seen Bowers Or Bruhn round 1 if it was last week. Maybe not even Ollie Henry and certainly not Ollie Dempsey

If they all have another great game on Thursday that for me means it was worth doing practice games…and keeps the whole squad on its toes

So i assume teams come out tonight?

I wouldn’t be surprised if we a bit younger on Thursday. I don’t think Cats care about winning or losing (maybe don’t mind giving Brisbane false hope too!).

They will want to give Sam Simpson a game and I suspect they want to keep anyone on the “fringe” (three newbies and Dempsey) another shot to keep pressure on everyone.

So not 100% sure who but reckon they leave behind a couple of the older guys (won’t be new captain or VC - so maybe Smith, Jezza or 2E). Would need to be whoever is certain for round 1 I reckon.

My only other doubt is Bowes - too many rumours about calf issue and no news from cats always reinforces injuries!!

So thursday could be something different - in particular the forward line will look unusual I reckon

Nah I say ditch the practice game. Have an extra round of footy. Instead let teams pick their round 1 opponent maybe. Do it in order of ladder position but the choosing team can either select their opponent or home game. Make the teams do it before trade period, so AFL has plenty of opportunity to work out the rest of the draw so that it is balanced. Same amount of footy, 1 more round of 4 pts.

Im hoping that they keep Sav in the back line.

With no Cameron (maybe), Hawkins, Scratcher, Henry they could be tempted to swing him back forward.

But a full game in defence, and improving on his last outing, will have him a certainty for RD 1 I reckon.
I reckon they have put a line through Sav as a forward.

Maybe if it was absolutely needed in a real game they’d make the move, but I think they are committed to giving him a shot as a key back and I doubt they’d stifle any development chance of that for a practice match... especially when he would still be need down back anyway verse Daniher, Hipwood and Gunston.

From personal experience feet issues are an absolute bastard when it comes to Aussie rules. Can rehab 6 months, train the house down then one awkward landing (in a sport full of awkward landings) and it can be right back to square one. I feel for Jack. But better now than mid or late season.
Hopefully the surgery can stop the reoccurrences best to do it now and come back stronger

Yeah Stanley will spend a bit of time forward and danger will be one out for a bit of the game as well I reckon.

At training Stengle was piggy backing on Miers shoulders. They might test a new prototype hybrid forward structure where two short people secretly combine to confuse the defenders and create one. Chris Scott said we'll try different things.

I nearly laugh reacted to your comment, purely based on the bolded - that would have been great to see

They will but I reckon only a minority of time (unless it gets embarrassing). They will set Rohan and Henry a task to crash the packs and maybe even Ollie d to play a bit more hybrid.
And of course captain danger.

Think game I reckon is about learning something different in the event they need to switch up. I reckon they (at least for first half) they learn more with small line up than plonking height in for the sake of it (those options aren’t natural forwards)

It has really peaked my interest. Especially as I happen to be in brisbane for work!!
