What worries me are the kick ins same as the past 2 years, The poor guy kicking out has no options, we get almost the whole team down in the backline so he has no other option but to bomb it. We need to hold our position and have some open space for players to run into & give the FB some options. Just watch next time how our forwards are at CHB, & the defenders only has the option of bombing it. At least i saw 2 times the full back ran it out and tried to get over the crowded HBF's.

What worries me more is the exact opposite, how we defend oppo kick ins. Coast to coast scores with us not touching the ball should almost never happen let alone a few times a game

I only watched the first half but thought our pressure was good.

Losing Flynn the day before was a big loss imo and probably throw us out a bit. TBF Freo’s ruck and midfield are pretty strong so not sure what people were expecting?
Need more composure moving the ball forward and a better connection between mids and forwards.
No doubt we will be bottom four, but let’s get around the kids and support them this year. Looking for green shoots.

BZparkes can you tell me again how Simmo will coach us until 2025 and beyond.
Really unsure what your weird obsession is with me for simply thinking it's unreasonable to solely lay the blame at the feet of the head coach for 2 years of injuries forcing the club to field WAFL players, but you do you.

Agree with this.

Fyfe looked fit and clean and despite purple traditionally being the colour of failure, any centre bounce line up with Fyfe, Brayshaw, and Darcy is going to be reasonable.

Didn’t care about the result but was a tad disappointed in how we approached and applied ourselves.
I would have thought the list would have been told in no uncertain terms that you will not only be the fittest you have ever been but our goal is to be the fittest club in the league period. Also that everything we do going forward will be attempted to be at our best, no one will show more effort, more passion, and more endeavour. The club will wear the consequences of that.
So for us to come out pretty meek and mild and see Freo being the ones hungry, and show all the quality signs a coach wants to see then that is what I felt a tad disappointed in.
It is only the first hit out so let’s see what happens this week.
Like it or not these hit-outs actually have some meaning for us as opposed to other clubs, it shows intent for what you will bring.
So that being said I will watch with interest this week because what I watched yesterday was the sane old players going through the same old motions. Some of the young guys I liked their efforts.
Every team is aiming to be the fittest in the competition. It just depends what part of the season you aim to be the fittest.

As in any sport, talent and experience count. Freo currently has more talent across the field.

Other posters have alluded to (some/all I don't know, it hasn't be specified) your senior players just cashing their cheque and going through the motions. That filters through the playing group, and there's a coach/club can do if this is happening, other than to remove them from the team entirely (pay them out).

Most often though, it's the coach that gets the bullet in such a situation.

No one is saying we have Freo’s talent.
My point was I didn’t see a group that was showing the coach that we will literally die for you this year. There is nothing we won’t do for you or the club.
That is what stood out for me, like I said we will see what happens the next few weeks.

Maybe I am looking for something that a Simpson coached side will never show??

Simpson is on a hiding to nothing.

Already a significant injury list to key personal.

Very few top tier senior players not on the downhill side of their career.

Having to ask more of young players than should be expected.

It was good to see us get it into forward 50 more than last year, but the ease that they brought the ball out was rubbish.
We have to be better at stopping runs from our forward line, players were too far off their man and they got the easy ones out the back. When they were moving forward we crowded the strong side but they had 4 loose men on the weak side. Even though we were trying to crowd the side of the ground they were moving they still hit targets. There was a few players that were good at pointing where others should be but were happy to guard air.
Need to get better at centre clearances, Yeo and Kelly were good around the ground but we were well and truly beaten in the middle.
When we move forward there is no effort to clear space for a teammate to lead into, we just stand waving our hands in the air.
We can only get better.

Should have traded Petch last year, I’ve been convinced for a long time he won’t make it, but people keep getting blinded by his speed.
He uses his pace once or twice a game and that is his strength. Very rarely uses it to chase someone but is quicker if he is heading to goal.

I reckon you’ve heard that before
Ha Ha toche! If I may, it takes one to know one... FWIW I think Simpson is a very good coach trying to do his best with a shitty list.
A rebuild is painful, I doubt your club and the supporters have the patience and wisdom to back Simpson (premiership coach no less) in.
