I wonder if Shanahan playing back is due to the injuries to Jamo, Edwards and Bazzo, just to make the drills work or if thats the long term plan for him

The KPDs we have fit are Gov, Van Es, Brock and Barnett I guess?
vs 4 KPFs Allen, Waterman, Reid, JWilliams
Shanahan just an extra there

I dont know exactly what they were doing at training but it sounds like Shanahan in defence is the plan?

That’s what I assumed all along, that we were intending to employ shanahan as a defender. Especially when he said he played better there in his first presser….Lots of good forwards start down back and then move, and vice versa. It’s not set in stone. E.g Gov and Oscar

Our mids better be putting on heaps of pressure this year, or our defence will get sieved!!

Yeah thats what I was on originally, but everything I hear here is Shanahan is too good as a forward to waste in the backline.
Personally id be happy with him just training as a defender, as the Gov replacement.
I dont think any of our other key backs are really suited to playing that role, Bazzo maybe but hes not as good a prospect as Shanahan is and as we know he cant stay healthy.

Great isn't it, 1 or 2 of Shanahan/Barnett/Archer may fill the void in defence we have currently and become a quality KD with time.
Our young KP players in JW, Archer, Shanahan looks very talented, throw in Barnett if he doesn't progress in a ruck role and ends up a KDEF of quality and we would have to be happy with that!!
No mention of Maric in training reports? Where was he playing?
Onwards and upwards.

Caught some of the session today but by the time I arrived at 9.30 they had completed their warmups and were already into a ball movement drill. As was the case prior to Christmas there was a heavy focus on ball movement but they did break into a full ground match sim for about 15-20 minutes late in the session

Interspersed with the ball drills was a couple of 400m runs and a shuttle run in pairs to finish where the players ran from one side of the centre square and back, then tag with their partner who then did the same. Each player did about of 5 reps each

They finished about 11.15 so I’m guessing at a 2 hour plus session overall

According to the club all but Bazzo (foot) and Yeo (eye) trained - I didn’t spot Edwards, Chesser, Sheed or Petruccelle at any stage but some players were on the outer oval well away where I was watching from

A lot of the drills were also at the southern end of the ground some distance from my position so it was difficult to make out who was who. The match sim I had trouble making out match ups at that end - so didn’t pick up that Shanahan was playing as a defender

Random player notes
• Baker brings a lot of intensity to training which showed up in the match sim
• Hunt looked to be more half back than wing in the match sim which is a departure from pre Christmas
• Ginbey was prominent and laid one really strong tackle
• Hewett continues to impress
• Reid settled into match sim nicely alleviating some concerns over his fitness
• Duggan was playing as a mid prior to his corkie and was finding the ball regularly
• Cripps and Owies were both busy as half forwards
• Hough sat out the match sim I think but after reports of him having work done on his groin last week he was moving fine today
• Gov was very good
• Archer Reid is going to be hard to keep out of the side. Was impressed with him again
• They seem keen to get the ball into Maric’s hands off half back
• Flynn moves a bit like Gun-Jack from Tekken but pushed forward in match sim to good effect. No ruck contests in match sim and Bailey Williams wasn’t playing either
• Cole was good and no longer has his thumb in a cast
• Hall looks keen to press for a game and is playing with good aggression
• Davis had some good moments in the wing
• Dewar was also good in the opposite wing including a good run down one side before delivering the ball inside 50
• Hutchinson did the full session as far as I could tell which is a good sign after he was in reduced loads pre Christmas

There were no NGA or WAFL squad players today

Yeah fair enough.
At 18/19 years of age, I don’t think there’s any huge need to pigeon hole anyone. Saying he is too good…I’d rather he play down back in the afl team than be in and out swapping with archer Reid and Jack Williams for the third tall spot for the next 5 years until Oscar and waterman are surpassed.

Thanks for the report. All pretty positive on there
It seems baker and graham additions will be very beneficial and owies too.

Cheers for the report Keys

All seems to be promising news.

Happy to read that Barnett, Archer and Shanahan are all impressing via the different reports.

I'm almost as excited for the Beagles games and watching the talented youth develop as I am for the league team.
