I know people don’t want Reid rucking too early but I remember watching some of his u18’s games and he was really good in the ruck. Probably played his best games switching between ruck and forward.
If Billiams and Flynn continue to struggle then I could see a future where Reid and Jilliams split the ruck/fwd duties. Probably not this year but it would be a way to get both in the team long term.
It will be interesting to see if he does any rucking in the Beagles this year.
It will be either him or Barnett who support one of Flynn or Billiams in the wafl.

My take aways from training today-
Fairly light session, skills weren't great due to some wind and general low intensity from the group.

Flynn injury had him pointing to his heel/ Achilles with trainer's fwiw.
Nice to see drills with overlap runners from behind, charging upfield in numbers.
Hutchy running well, super athlete and in most drills now after modified loads pre Xmas.

Kept a good eye on Brock and who I assume is Van Es in #41. Both training with the backs.
Brock still to fill out but a huge frame and neat left foot.
Van Es I must say was totally underwhelming. From early warm up, stationary kicking with BoA, he'd make Bo run 5-10m nearly every kick over a 30m pass. Not to get overly critical.... but...he went on to drop a few marks and kicking did not improve. Even lazily kicking ball back to a coach setting up kicks for 3rd up marking drills, missed kick by a mile, making coach run back 20m to pick ball up and slow down drill. No intensity, little chat- I was actually amazed that this is a guy given a chance to fight for a list spot.
Brock might not be the guy but Van Es not in the ballpark from my small training sample size..

Whopper still with arm guard but in all drills, mainly unimpeded.
Good intensity from the usual suspects- Ginbey, Baker, the Spartan, Fridge, Clay, JHunt. Harley ran well.

BoA not out of place. Definitely kicks better long, can miss short spot up kicks.

Barnett, Maric, Baker training w backs as mentioned.

If JWill kicks 30 we are going deep into September. Rota-roota deep
As a team we kicked 229, JWill going from 16 goals to 30 would be nice but in total goals I think it gets us to around 15th. Take out Darlings 22 goals and we're actually worse off. (Yes I know this is a nonsense point about goal totals and nothing happens in a vacuum but its the one I'm making)

Feel the bigger issue is Cripps, Ryan, Petch, Dewar, Long, Culley, Brockman combined for only 60 goals. That's not great from the combined small forwards. Really need another 40-50 goals from them before we start thinking of the promised land.

Last year on average we kicked 10.10 whilst conceding 15.11 to our opponents. If we’re going to improve our percentage to 80+ then we need to find at least 2 more goals per game (I don’t think our defence is going to be able to improve)

Waterman (53), Cripps (27), Darling (22) and Allen (20 from 11 games) were the only players to kick 20+ goals

Williams (16), Ryan (13), Yeo (11), Petruccelle (11) and Reid (10) at least got to double figures

The rest of the club combined kicked 46 goals

Need Waterman and Allen to kick at least 4 goals per game and combined with Williams should be able to manage 6 a game from our tall forwards

Our small forwards- any combination of Cripps, Ryan, Owies, Long, Dewar, Petruccelle, Brockman probably need to contribute 4 goals per game collectively. If we’re going with 4 small to medium forwards then that’s a goal each per game on average

The other two goals per game then need to come from our mids, ruck and halfback in combination. Reid, Hewett, Kelly and Yeo should all be targeting 10+ goals for the season

Twelve goals a game would be a good start especially if we can maintain (or reduce) the 15 goals conceded

12 goals per game doesn’t sound like much, but when you consider 12 goals = 72 points, the average score per game is 80 points, you’re essentially saying you expect us to be an average/slightly above average team next year in terms of attack (once you factor in behinds).

I agree with your sense that our back 6 is worse than 12 months ago given the departure of TB, but I think we can leak less goals just from having a better midfield that a) lets us play more time in our forward half and b) gives away less easy clearances/basic skill error turnovers that results in our defenders scrambling and often leads to easy hit up targets in oppo F50 and better defensive pressure to help out the back 6.

A more realistic expectation is an additional goal in attack and one less in defence, unless we have a 2011 type bounce back.

People underestimate the difference having a balanced midfield will make. You cant expect your defence o have a good time if you cant win hitouts and at the same time you cant defend clearances
With Flynn back(hopefully) and Duggan/Graham in the middle that is a huge shift in our midfield.

If Cripps kicked 27 goals this year I'd be pretty happy.

Need players like Long (2 goals from 7 games), Petch (11 goals from 16 games) and Ryan (13 goals from 16 games) to increase their output to cover his decline.

Would like to see Cripps as the roaming HFF sprinting up and down the ground and applying pressure, others need to be crumbing more.

Allen's goals will come just from being on the park, not at all worried about there being an uptick for him if he stays fit.

From there I'd like to see an increase from the midfield, especially if we're going to have chaos ball and players streaming forwards.

If Reid and Hewitt got to ~1 goal per game it goes a long way to taking the pressure off the team, which is not impossible if they're rotating deep forward (Reid) or off the HFF (Hewitt).

Also Kelly kicked 4 goals last year, could do a lot better with less midfield minutes.

If he plays instead of JW, he will probably be 2nd ruck. Other teams do it with players of a similar build to his and Archer has shown he can do it at u18 level.

I do think one of Flynn or BWilliams plays unless they are both injured.

Fats Reid probably had to go to the races in Vic instead

I heard his hand-on-top GF refused to sign his permission slip and he wasn't allowed on the bus.

All except for Harley (and injury) it seems, pretty disappointing if that’s the case.

He was concussed so not sure him going there was a good idea.

IS that Sam Butler in the group photo.
