Training notes from the West

Apparently the main talking point was a random Brisbane fan trying to get Oscar Allen to sign a Lions jumper. Just what we really wanted to know

More importantly, Bazzo making good progress in his recovery from foot surgery and Owies spent time in match sim pushing up into the midfield to good effect

Meanwhile the AFL report focused on the ankle injury sustained by Baker but also contained this little nugget

Former forward Ryan Maric continued to train in defence and impressed with several piercing kicks into the corridor.

And this one

Draftee Malakai Champion had a strong session and was lively as a half-forward, finding space on multiple occasions and showing poise to break a tackle and kick well inside 50.

Also mentioned Owies time in the midfield

Is Brodie Kemp the one trying to tackle the guy we're supposed to recognise in the picture, or is that Brodie Kemp in the picture and he's really hard to tackle?

Gross was pretty good for the 15 , 20 minute scrimmage had a few good distributions . Harley tried his fend off successful for 1 then was swarmed by 3 and caught . Bo Allen was given a little lesson by Flyin who was loose out the back a few times and Jobe also down back found it tough I'd say . Very small sample size and it was gusty Maric was ok . Kelly dropping an easy chest mark and caught , groan from the small crowd .

Eagles hopeful Baker suffered only a minor sprain

Still has 19 days to get himself right for the scrimmage against his old side

And with R1 still a bit over 6 weeks away so should be right by then

You don't need to be an expert in body language to know it's minor based on the clips on X (formerly twitter)

Lol seriously, all they needed was someone fanning him down and he would've been straight chilling. Probably just a bad ankle roll which requires icing and strapping

Typical lazy West article...all the wordcount taken up with something about a Brisbane jumper yet not a single mention of Hutch's ass.

Can we try keeping this thread discussing training and move the merits or otherwise of trade/draft decisions to the contracts megathread

Please
I’ve just moved a bunch of posts to the contracts thread

Training discussion only

No please this time, just keep on ****ing topic

Well that's the best possible outcome.
But Allan is a much worse Ginbey, and Gross is a much worse Long if used that way.
How is Allan a much worse Ginbey based on there draft years?

Cmon Dinnaz he was pretty bloody good in the Champs and played more WAFL league in which he didn’t look out of place at all.

Time will tell but I think he was a little underrated on our Eagles board.

I really like both too. Their work ethic and size and power once fully formed will be very handy for our future sides

Allan will be a really solid player. Definitely a good use of the draft pick.

Do people really expect Graham to come in and be a decent inside mid ?

He has had 8 seasons and never played well as an inside mid . Best clearance average for a year was 2.6 clearances a game

Sure he runs hard but he sucks at winning clearances , struggles picking up possessions and is treacle slow on the spread.

What exactly does he bring to our side ?

Winning time trials ?

I mean sheed is way better than Graham in every stat except tackling and sheed shouldn't be anywhere near our developing midfield.

It's been interesting to see the limited media around WC's new game plan since bringing Mini in.

In case you missed this key video...

Mini talks about creating a system comprising of roles, of which each role affects the next and there is no emphasis on kicks marks or handballs.

This aligns with comments around our game style focusing on controlling territory and creating and scoring off turnovers.

Furthermore, Shuey did an interview on Backchat after they brought Mini in and he mentioned that he didn't believe Mini put as much emphasis on clearance and stoppage craft.

These comments seem to align with the data which showed Richmond being bottom 4 in the league for clearances in all of their premiership winning years '17,'19 &'20.

Interestingly, the Tigers ranked top 3 in the league during these years in Inside 50s... so despite losing clearances, the game plan still resulted in a highly attacking brand of football.

I personally don't believe Jack Graham's 20m sprint time is going to have any effect on the performance on or off the field at WC. Jack has obviously been brought in for his leadership, experience, impeccably high training standards and his ability to help implement Mini's game plan as quickly as possible.

I'm really excited to see a new high pressure game style and faster ball movement. As long as we are improving and getting development into the younger players then we are moving in the right direction.

FWIW - I believe WC as a club will improve more in 2025 and beyond with the addition of Baker, Graham and Owies (as well as Allan, Shanahan and Gross) rather than pinning all our hopes on a Jagga/Draper type (not to say they won't be good AFL players)

That's nice that Richmond won 3 premierships of the back of losing the clearances and winning post clearance turnovers in their back half .

Unfortunately the 6 6 6 and stand rule came in and pretty much made the Richmond game style obsolete as fast centre clearances completely nullified this without the extras behind the ball to create turnovers .

These rules have made centre clearance dominance and forward press style game plans much more effective.

Interesting times as I hope minis stint at Melbourne has taught him that weakness

Yeah, it was such an 'obsolete' gameplan that Richmond won 2 flags after the 6 6 6 rule was introduced, eh?

Well 6-6-6 is for CBs only, not around the ground clearances which makes up the majority of clearance stats.

A lot of people would argue that the post-clearance groundball stat would be more important than clearances, as I'm sure you will remember, Gaff's clearances were usually just a throw it on the boot and launch it forward most times, not a Judd like explosion from clearance bullet pass to leading forward.

That icky feeling you get when Kane Cornes has a point

But it’s Andrew Russell (former high performance manager at Carlton and Hawthorn) talking at the end about the impact of the Christmas break that’s of most interest
