Thank you 76woodenspooners

One of BigFooty’s all-time-favourite posters, Reykjavik , was all across the board level stuff. He once posted a list of the responsibilities of a Not-For-Profit board like that of Collingwood …

abcdef.....ijklmnop

NFP board responsibilities
Specific responsibilities of a not-for-profit (NFP) board include:

  • Driving the strategic direction of the organisation
  • Working with the CEO to enable the organisation to obtain the resources, funds and personnel necessary to implement the organisation's strategic objectives
  • Implementing, maintaining and (as necessary) refining a system of good governance that is appropriate for the organisation
  • Reviewing reports and monitoring the performance of the organisation
  • Regularly reviewing the board's structure and composition, so that these are appropriate for the organisation
  • Appointing – and managing the performance of – a suitable CEO
  • Succession planning for the CEO
While the above points are also applicable to for-profit boards, NFP boards also face a unique range of issues, such as:

  • Difficulties in defining and measuring organisational effectiveness
  • Transgression of role boundaries
  • The negative impact of the structural compositions of some NFP boards, including those arising from representative models
  • Funding dependencies and constraints

In practice, the role of the board is to supervise an organisation's business in two broad areas:

  1. Overall business performance - ensuring the organisation develops and implements strategies and supporting policies to enable it to fulfill the objectives set out in the organisation's constitution. The board delegates the day to day management of the organisation but remains accountable to the shareholders for the organisation's performance. The board monitors and supports management in an on-going way.
  2. Overall compliance performance - ensuring the organisation develops and implements systems to enable it to comply with its legal and policy obligations (complying with statutes such as the Corporations Act 2001, adhering to accounting standards) and ensure the organisation's assets are protected through appropriate risk management.

I must say that I was a little concerned about the change in board and was concerned about the bona fides of Brown as President but, they have proven to be good value. Their work on addressing outcomes of the "Do Better" report has been positive with players like Krakouer and Davis reconciling with the club. Their work behind the scenes has been admirable and it is refreshing to have a board that allows the football department to go about their business without grandstanding or interfering is refreshing. I am pleased with this board so far.

The results of our senior team really does set the mood on this stuff.

Trust me, if this time last year we were sitting 2nd on the ladder after 11 wins we’d all be singing the virtues of Dr Bridie O’Donnell and what a boon she has been for our club. We’d be celebrating Mark Korda as being a highly competent nerd.

When we’re losing, we want to burn the place down. Last year many were calling to sack everybody from the President, the board, the CEO, the National recruiting manager, the coach, all the way down to the bootstudder.

This year we’re winning. There’s talk about a Grundy going and us paying a portion of his salary, and most folks seem to be ‘meh’ about it.

Meh about paying 300k of Grundy's salary for the next 5 years? I dont think so, everyone here will be livid if it happens, most just dont believe it could happen again.

We achieved 100K as he wished.

Great achievement, but onfield success normally sees an uplift in membership numbers and the 100K also includes AFLW. Not taking anything away from the women's team, I'd like to see a separate breakdown and it would be interesting to know if those who hold both AFL and AFLW cards be counted once or twice.

Good move in my view.

I never understood the exclusion of non-social club members to vote and or sign partitions for EGMs/AGMs when needed. Particularly when we kinda don't have a physical social club any more, unless you want to call a random MCG bar that we use on game say a social club!

The MCG should do the rightful thing and recreate the social club just for us

Tragic story

Any footy supporter who considers Premierships to be the measure of success and satisfaction are doomed to live a pretty miserable life.

Brisbane, Carlton, Essendon and even North Melbourne have all won more Premierships in my lifetime than Collingwood, but you reckon their supporters are more satisfied than us with their lot?

No way!

Even Richmond - you’d have to have a very short memory to think that Richmond supporters have had a fun time along the journey.

Of course Premierships are nice to win, but IMO they’re only a small part of the joy of being a footy supporter. I’d be a friggen’ miserable sod otherwise.

No other club supporter would understand the pain we have endured!

at least you've explained my miserable life....

And mine - the list could grow

I think all need to deal with failure in their own way. If 76 wants to concentrate on the fluffy side of the club, then so be it. I tend to concentrate more on how we need to become a killing machine to win multiple premierships. In that sense, I still enjoy things like that run of games but it only made a wet cold winter more tolerable....

Tragic story
Don’t disagree there, however an administration needs to be commended getting a list together competing in grand finals and prelims. They can’t take the field kick the goals and make the tackles. We’ve been up there with the best for a very long time. Look at Carltank, Melbourne and Essendon. Tough going!
