Re: Primus - is the gloss wearing off already

Last year we had a backline building ...

JT, Bob, Surj

PStew, Chappy, ?

we were just missing a running half-back ... Pittard came in but the rest have gone the way of the dodo

Primus ... WTF Happened?

Re: Primus - is the gloss wearing off already

Sadly I agree, a ridiculous coaching decision. Can we seek an explanation?

I would of loved to hear one, but I haven't listened to 5CC for at least 3 weeks now, I'm sure grumpy would of made a comment.

Maybe Primus's explanation went something like this:

'Umm, Yeah, obviously it didn't work for us umm, but as good as Kane is a tagger - umm, I saw something on the training track that made me think "Umm, Kane is a superb kick and game breaker" maybe he could be the umm, ultimate sub. Umm unfortunately he didn't follow Deans instructions umm, apparently the email never got to Kane, umm and you know with Dean being in victoria it's hard to get the message through umm yeah.'

'But you know umm, if we keep playing like this we will umm, earn the respect of the whole umm, competition.'

Re: Primus - is the gloss wearing off already

In 7 years on line with PAFC football threads, I dont think I've ever seen a conclusion come as clearly

Most of us all saw it was time for choco to go and it felt good, but this one just plain hurts

i feel for the guy- obviously he's trying and that, he's just out of his depth and lacks ideas

still, its his own fault- all he had to do was use the magic 8 ball to make a few positional changes and at least then we'd have been able to point to that- but we don't even have that to look at

at the end of the day he's just plain_hopeless.

what a shame

i agree with gopower tSW and most everyone else, just move him on now and be done with it

Re: Primus - is the gloss wearing off already

Now, I don't agree with some of the decisions of the coaching panel but sacking Primus is kinda rash. I'd be looking at his more experienced assistants to direct my ire towards instead.

What were people's opinions of Choco in 2000? (legitimate question because I wasn't on this board back then).

Re: Primus - is the gloss wearing off already

Unless we're paying him in club merch and POW meal vouchers there's no chance in hell he's going to be sacked.

I remember back to Duncanson saying throughout the selection process "we're not going to be influenced by outside pressure".......With 5AA leading the charge and a former great in Russell Ebert threatening to walk away from the club if Primus failed to get the gig i think it's probably fair to say outside pressure did play a role. And that's just sad.

Re: Primus - is the gloss wearing off already

I have just felt for years that the whole footy department was way behind the rest of the competition (tactics wise).
So the head coach we had couldnt take the team forward, obviously none of the assistants had any knowledge or ideas to help take the team forward either.
So i was always skeptical that sacking Williams and hiring someone that learnt how to coach under williams and williams alone would help our situation.

But really what i see every week is a team that doesnt run nearly enough, i watch a lot of AFL and no other team consistantly has no run no matter of the oppersition.

... true enough - Cripps also was with Williams as was Rhode (he has a match day role?). Buddha is new to the AFL ranks - maybe not pushy enough to get his ideas in (or hasnt got any?). Laidley - I thought he was going to add something but is/was his heart really in it when choc went, and esp. this year as a part-timer only).

Hoping that with a few more $ we can get some new ideas into the box to support Matty (jury still out on his 'head coach' ability for me).

Re: Primus - is the gloss wearing off already

What I get is that clubs go to the bottom but I don't usually see the hate that we've gotten for having a shit year. The vic media with familiarity with their clubs simply write them off at the bottom as meh rebuilding, meh don't worry they'll be back etc we are bottom and suddenly everyone is acting like it's the end of the world.

I remember we got done by Hawthorn on a Sunday night match at home and I was sitting pretty close to the coaches box and he copped it from fans the whole 2nd half pretty much.

We need some experience in the box to help Matty at the moment. Being tactically out done on match day is bad, but our selections this weekend continue to baffle me.

Is this team picked vs Melbourne similar to the team vs Richmond in Darwin?

To be fair, this is our fourth year without being close to finals.

Re: the Choco 2000 thing, it was a messy year, but you could see what he was trying to do, and a bunch of players coming along. You couldn't really say that about this year.

In hindsight or at the time though?

I am sure there were just as many chicken littles running around then saying he had NFI and would never get us a premiership.

I get shocked at apparent shock of our poor member base of 36,000 members.

I recall there being a degree of anti-Choco sentiment in 2000... IIRC most of it stemmed from the feeling that John Cahill didn't deserve to go as he had delivered more than many expected.

Then under Choco we had terrible start to 2000, hit the bottom of the ladder for the 1st time... and well you can imagine what was being written everywhere.

Then in the 2nd half of 2000 we actually strung some wins together, against finals contenders and people began seeing a glimmer of hope... next 5 years were history.

------------------------

On Primus I agree that we need to give him a MINIMUM 2 years to make an impact. 2 full draft/trade periods, 2 pre-seasons and 2 seasons to get an idea of where he is taking us.

I've heard 2nd hand (good friend of..) from a former PAFC board member who interviewed the coaching candidates and they were "blown away" by Primus' presentions and plans for the team. He was by far the most impressive candidate.

Sure I'm not totally happy with what he has done this season... but I like to think this season as: "information gathering"... he is testing players abilities, apptitudes, and work ethics in preparation for what he has planned.

Re: Primus - is the gloss wearing off already

Not really. It's actually quite different. Maybe Primus hasn't yet found 22 players who can put in a 4 quarter effort. Worth pointing out though that plenty of those changes are due to player injuries

In: Cassisi, Salopek, Banner, Rodan, Salter, Lobbe, Ebert, C.Cornes
Out: D.Motlop, Broadbent, Brogan, Phillips, Moore, Carlile, Pittard, J.Westhoff

Just on this, I'm really trying to figure out what has been achieved this year. We've played 35 players, pumped games into the younger players and have put a fair whack of our senior players on the outer: Salopek, D.Motlop, Surjan, Ebert and Pettigrew; that much is obvious.

Is this really Primus having NFI or the inevitable outcome from 3 years of short-sightetness by Choco or a combination of both?

Well, I am referring to my personal experience.

I wasn't as heavily invested in the Jack Cahill style of things as most fans, and it says something about how most Port fans didn't like losing touch with that when I can come on the Port board and see `Let's Back Jack' talked about even now.

Also, you could already see that Warren Tredrea was going to be a champion, and that the only reason he was still quiet was because of shitful delivery, which Choco style seemed to be all about improving - we weren't going to get anywhere with a pure Magpies side coming in and firing off long bombs all day.

* Choco bullshit
* Primus deciding to give people a last chance rather than start the cuts last year - he got sucked in by `i want to keep my job' vigour at the end of last year.
* Primus apparently can't force structure with personality alone.
