I have a bet with a mate who doesn't believe I can make it to 100 posts without being red carded

what he doesn't know is that if i don't mention 2 players in particular, im good for the money

I need to stay alive because i want to be live when we here "the coach has the full support of the board" in 3 weeks

If the question hasn't already been asked I think it is time. Would our club be derelict in it's duty if it did not approach Mick Malthouse and Paul Roos in relation to taking over as senior coach in 2013? I like Primus and have great respect for what he acheived as a player but even his greatest admirer could not compare him to Malthouse or Roos as a coach. The club comes before the individual. If we as a club can send Russell Ebert packing as a coach to secure a better option I'm sure as hell we can do the same to Primus. Both Malthouse and Roos are coaching legends and I believe the club owes it to its members to get the best available coach. In view of this we should be on the phone to both asap and throwing everything but the kitchen sink at them. Would either consider a move to SA?? Unlikely. But we should at least ask the question and make them an offer they would have to seriously consider.

AFAIK Malthouse wants to coach again, but isn't keen on leaving Melbourne. Roos I'm not sure.

I definitely think ATM we need a coach who can find ways to motivate: be before the game or during. We need a coach who can do/say what is neccessary to get our minds right for the game.

I think if we are going to get malthouse we need to go all "romance of it"

Jeeze, Ross Lyon currently making Primus's structures look like a tactical master stroke. So glad we don't have Mr. Lyon at our club.
St Kilda looked shit under Lyon for three years before it all clicked too. He is instituting a genuine regime change at Freo.

Been reading a few posts going back regarding coaches.. names like Watters, Hardwick etc have been thrown up by supporters. Watters is in 1st year and had a premiership contender of a team to start with and will take a while to find his feet.
Hardwick has been coach for a few years at richmond and although they have improved since he took over ... its more i think that they lack key defenders from progressing from 9th to top 8
Even mad Alistar at the hawks took a few years to find his groove with the hawks and they copped some hidings.. they have the advantage of tanking to get Franklin etc.. so he had a decent spine to work with..

Matty was working with our boys for a fair time whilst they have been mediocre, I understand some blame to Choco but not all.

I find it difficult to defend him sorry, it doesn't mean I don't like him however.

I actually rate Lyon. He got St Kilda close a few times against some bloody tough opposition in Geelong and Collingwood. He seems to have a good philosophy in relating to players, structures and football in general etc. But we've missed that boat.

We definitely need someone to motivate and steel the fragile minds and belief of our players. And I am become less impressed with Primus by the day. During last nights presser he seemed to lay the blame at the feet of the midfielders... {our midfielders need to think about if they want to be bona fide mids}...

Dangerous words IMO... are we a team or are we now starting to lay blame on our sub teams? Not the words of a unified team being responsible for the result coming from our coach.

Primus has gone into the "Save Matthew Primus' job" assault 5 weeks into the season. The team has been competitive in 5 of 5 games. The team has also lost 4 games largely thanks to the mismanagement of the team and a plethora of other issues.

Next time Russell Ebert(I love him to death but let's call a spade a spade) puts his hat in the ring and makes a fuss about who the club should appoint, someone should remind him that he has no administrative credentials and should leave that decision to the administrators.

The problem Primus is going to face is the team now looks competitive for stretches, but we know that's never going to be enough. I would hope Keith Thomas orders a review into potential head coaching prospects from outside of the club, preferably proven candidates. 1-4 doesn't look good after last season.

I'm pretty satisfied that the issues at present are not fitness or conditioning-related, but rather desire, mental strength and perhaps confidence to back ourselves in.

We were more than capable of running out yesterday's game.

We're lacking inspiration from within to draw on in times of crisis.

Once again, I'd argue that it comes down to the failure of the leadership group to lead by example. At least Boak and Cassisi publicly acknowledge that they let us down (along with Hartlett and Trengove) more than anyone yesterday.

Over the previous few years our playing group has mastered a variety of ways to apologise for sub-par performances.

Unfortunately, they've yet to master a full game of steely resolve. Perhaps saying sorry has become enough?

It's very little consolation. I just want to know why so many of our players haven't worked hard enough over the off season to actually improve this year.

There are exceptions of course (most of the backline :)), but the lack of individual development continues to stagger me.

I really didn't see it that way. I mean blind freddy can see that most of the problem is with our midfield, so that's just being honest. I wouldn't be surprised if Trav put his hand up to do the presser. Regardless of what people think of his onfield leadership I think he is just trying to take some responsibility and ownership for the situation. He made a point of praising the defence and forwards. You've got the same message coming from the coach and the midfield group together rather than one section of the players potting another so I don't think it would be divisive.

Fitness is not the only factor, but it's a contributing one. Take away our last quarters and I'd say there's still a majority opinion here that we suck dog's balls during time on. We leak like a sieve the last 5 - 10 minutes of quarters worse then the first 20 minutes.

Now some of that is selection. Primus with his insistence on one real ruck, ensuring they tire by the end of quarters (and in the last) ensuring we play catch up and unsurprisingly stink in clearances. However it's a more general lack of fitness still.

None of that forgives of course the multitude of other problems we have, mental strength definitely being one of them.

Last year our problems were:
  • Lack of general desire to try when things aren't going all their way
  • Poor backline
  • Dsyfunctional forward line
  • Midfield that won't defend
  • Lack of players who will rise when the chips are really down
  • Poor fitness
  • Poor selections
  • Slow moves from the coaches to opposition structures that kill us (Hi Harry)
Now I think we can remove the first two from the list for this year. Our players are mentally stronger, but they still lack the pride / desire to step up when it's really needed.

And that still leaves a bloody huge list of flaws to fix. :(

Too many in the Adelaide Bubble SPG. :(

Still remember the audible 'NOOOOOOO-' that involuntarily escaped my upper orifice when I got the club's Facebook alert prior to the Gold Coast game that quoted Surj as saying we were going to honour and live up to the spirit of the ANZAC's.

So much piss and wind.

I guess we did get mowed down storming the beach head. :(

Re: Primus - is the gloss wearing off already

Primus had his honeymoon period with last year's 7 games.

By round 10 this year Chris Scott's and James Hird's will be over.

We saw glimpses of a new game style last year. Not a lot, but enough to convince us that change was coming. That change has stalled and without our best midfielders and players in the side we wont play our best football. It will take all of this year and some of next to wash out the Williams unaccountable, backward stepping zone defence crap.

The question is, do we as a club and supporter base have the patience after seeing 3 seasons of mostly crap and schizophrenic football played by our club, to hang in there?? It's tough - but its unavoidable.

We desperately need to recruit a very good defensive coach. A boring dour type player who played somewhere between 50 and 150 AFL games all in defence, and one day is going to become an AFL head coach. Until we get a very hard headed defensive mindset we are going to struggle. We don't have the star players across the midfield and forwards like the Hawks did in 2008, to be a serious threat, so we have to start from defence IMO.

Primus has to do as a coach, as he did as a player. Work his arse off to improve all his skill sets and then impose himself on the game.

okay. a good thread to revisit this one. encourage to reread posts from over a year ago

this was april last year.

we now agree the D coach has been good

do we persist with primus' "plan"?

have we given him long enough?

Ran out of patience, dont give him his contract extension.

Mark Harvey, Bomber Thompson, Malthouse/Roos, Bassett please even Gotch would be better

I think its pretty obvious he won't be a long term coach for us, I just hope he can instill some sort of Port ethos into the players he coaches so as the new coach can at least take over a club and list heading in the right direction, but even that seems wishful thinking.

I guess it doesn't help us that, the top 8 are so close this year, and Collingwood, Hawthorn and Geelong are not in the top 4.

9-13 consists of teams who have been in the making for some time now, and improved considerably, that leaves us in the bottom section of the ladder, basically because we don't have a good enough team. No coaching is going to save us this year.

Positives are that we haven't played GC, GWS, Bulldogs, Brisbane or Melbourne. So realistically we should win some of those. If we don't look out:)

I Don't understand the Primus contract, heard he can be told to leave at seasons end. But we have to do whatever it takes to secure the best coach, (With experience)
