Pros and Cons of hosting Soccer World Cup

Can only see the pros of hosting it. To be honest, the AFL and NRL would absolutely crap themselves if we win this bid. Imagine if we do win it, it is a MASSIVE win for the sport, as we would have 12 years of build up to the event. Normally a build up to major events is 7 years. So to have 12 is enormous.

Of course you can. Have you heard the expression one eyed, it referrs to someone who is incapable of looking at something objectively.
Most rational people would accept that very little in this world is perfect and most things have good points and bad points.

Thank you for explaining the good points.

IT WILL BE MASSIVE HUGE ENOURMOUS GIGANTIC REALLY REALLY BIG
Thank you for this contribution.

Having spent the last month and a half in Africa, I don't think people really understand how big soccer is. I was in the middle of Kenya in Nairobia at the Masai Mara park, where local tribes have lived for hundred's of years, and all they wanted to talk about was the world cup. There was 1 place to watch the game, and 100's of these tribe members were watching it. They don't have electricity in their homes, but yet they had this huge interest in the cp. The interest in the world cup was the same in Egypt and in Zambia. Until you are actually in these places you just cannot understand. What are the bad points of holding a worl cup? Please divulge them. Obviously it will cost a lot of money to hold, but with Australia's existing infrastructure, it is not an event that is going to destroy us financially and be a burden on our economy for 20 years. So let's have a look at a couple of positives:

1) The spotlight on Australia. For 5 weeks nothing else on the planet has more attention than a world cup. You will never get a tourism campaign as big as this. The focus on our country will benefit it for years and lead to extra tourists for years after the world cup. I would not have visited south africa if there was no world cup there. Now that I have gone, I can guarantee that I will travel back to the country.
2) The hunded's of thousands of international visitors. The money spent on the Australian community will be like nothing we have experienced before. Unlike an olympics, the world cup is across the entire country, so many more places benefit from it.
3) The improvement in infrastructure that comes from holding the world cup not only helps during the world cup, but also post world cup. But the fact is that we would not have to have a massive upgrade of infrastructure. Our roads, transport, stadiums, security, accommodation are all things that are already in place in our country.
4) The actual experience of having the world cup in your own country is something you cannot really describe until you actually experience it. Every single person that I spoke to in South Africa was so proud of their country, were ridiculously excited about holding the world cup, banded together, created an amazing atmosphere. Thousands of people on the streets partying and people just genuinely happy.
5) The benefit to the sport of soccer in this country. 12 years of build up. Knowing that we will be there and hosting it. Imagine the amount of kids, knowing that we will be holding it, having the goal to compete for Australia and increasing our skill and competitiveness in the sport. Whatever you want to say about the sport, it is the biggest in the world and I for one want to one day be an actual contender. If we were to hold the cup, you can guarantee that it will lead more kids to play the sport, take a bigger share of the participation rate and hopefully in turn improve our standard on the world stage.
Would you like any more reasons? Because I can list more if you like.

No the spotlight will be on the soccer. People will turn their televisions on to watch the games they want to see. See how narrow minded you are. Why would you not have visited S.A. before? There are lots of wonderful places to visit. No doubt in four years time you will be surprised to discover that Brazil is good to visit.

2) The hunded's of thousands of international visitors. The money spent on the Australian community will be like nothing we have experienced before. Unlike an olympics, the world cup is across the entire country, so many more places benefit from it.
Unless they are each spending $100,000 there will be no big windfall after the costs are considered.

Pretty sure the cost of upgrading roads and stuff has not been included in all the billions already allocated for the wc. I'd consider that our pollies would rather put up with short term gridlock than fork out more capital for a one off event.

So it would be good if Australians were also ridiculously excited? You know what ridiculous means don't you? Do you really think it would be the same here? Pretty sure my mother won't be partying in the steet.

What is all this world stage crap?

What is all this world stage crap?

It's called cultural cringe.

Seeking out approval from others around the world: others who are less educated than us. Others who are absolute economic basket cases.

Why would we be so keen to seek their approval?

Let us be more confident than that of our place in the world.

Let us leave the mythologising and debt-seeking to those countries who have little clue and are already economic basket cases.

Let us not join their number.

Personnally I find it amusing when ( particularly American ) people don't know the difference between Australia and Austria. It certainly doesn't hurt me.
While I admit that if some of the former Soviet and Yugoslavian countries, and maybe some of the smaller African countries were to have a WC, I might know slightly more about them ( similarly to how I now know slightly more about Uzbekistan since Borat ... yes I know it isn't really as he portrayed it ) but is it really a concern of ours to teach geography to the ignorant?

I already knew a bit about most of the major S.A, cities, some of their industries, some of their tourist attractions - before the world cup.
What I learnt during the W.C. is that your typical South African seems to be greatly ammused at the prospect of playing a single note musical instrument for extended periods of time.

Nice attempt at humour, but it falls flat when you get the facts wrong ...

Borat Sagdiyev is the fictional character from Kazakhstan. Kazakhstan does share a border with Uzbekistan but it is a totally different country!
