I agree to a point. I mean the Olyroos are key to our future and will form the basis of our future campaigns in the various tournaments and if we manage to somehow nab an Olympic medal that would be huge. At the same time the World Cup is the biggest single sporting event in the world and its imperative that we qualify for the good of the sport in this country.

We need to maintain a good developmental program to insure those U23 guys keep coming through time after time but really for at least the next year most of our resources should be going into helping the big boys get through the first stage of qualifiers. I also agree with you that if we dont make the WC his 2 1/2 year stay will be cut dramatically short.

Hmm it only appears short term appointments by the Socceroos IMHO...

If we don't qualify for the 2010 WC, he'll be gone, simple as that ...
Short term? Its the same for all coaches.
Any coach that can't get us to the WC should not be there afterwards.
He has two years is you may think is short term but its enough time to assess whether he is good enough.

Same opinion as has been stated here.

No doubt the dutch factor was the deciding factor (IE I have no idea why they chose him over Troussier for any other reason).

I'm a bit baffled at the 'experience' he supposedly has:

His only national team experience is a 1-3-1 record (Arnold had a 1-2-1 record with us) at the Asian cup with one of the big 4 teams in Asia.

VS

Troussier - African Cup winner (Main tournament in South Africa), qualified South Africa to WC (ditto), Asian cup winner, 2nd confeds cup, 5th Olympics, final 16 WC 2002.

I think the assistant coach experience to Hiddink and Advocaat can be decieving, Graham Arnold got an endorsement from Hiddink too remember, and look what he did.

Anyway, I'm hoping that the long term rewards of the 'Dutch style' better be damn good.
He was part of Hiddink's group who got Korea to the WC Semis and has coached in the J - Leauge. In short he has more experiance than you think.

Also with our so called stars (primadonnas more like it!) not wanting to make the trip for the first part we need our coach to move here - do we know if Troussier was willing to do that? Comming to Sydney for an Interview does not mean he was!

Or we just are assuming big names are the only decent coaches around?

We went with a big name who are only in it for the money in Advocatt and we got burnt.

Australia are a more attaking team than Korea and they finished 3rd - missing the Final through penalty shootout. Imaging what he could do with us!

He has experience, but mostly as an Assistant Manager. Yes Troussier was willing to come to Australia to live. Our "primadonnas" may want to make the first trip but will be unable to during the hectic schedule of their clubs who pay their wages so I have no issue with that. We were promised a big name and instead we went for the cheap option because he is Dutch and Baan and Hiddink said he was good. We did just get burnt by a Dutchman also. Now I know the systems we currently have in place are all Dutch and we want to keep down that path but you cant just hire any Dutchman

Australia a more attacking side than Korea, How do you figure ?? Under Hiddink and Advocaat they played great stuff, and their clubs sides are known for attacking play. They played so poorly in the Asian Cup under the guy we just hired, thats what worries me the most. Also the lack of discipline his team showed both on and off the field was a worry.

All that being said im still willing to give the guy a chance but if we play the way Korea did in the Asian Cup he wont have a very long stay.

Saw that this afternoon :thumbsu:.

Nah but seriously everyone seems to be underwhelmed by his appointment to put it nicely. He strikes me as one of those blokes whos been stamped with the "Permanent Assistant" tag. Hopefully he proves us all wrong and we make it through the first stage of qualifying then he has a bit more of an idea about our players and more time to prepare for the next batch of them.

McDonald isnt really suited to being up there all on his own

He's been playing up front as lone striker for celtic a bit recently. I have been pretty supprised at how well he holds the ball too. NOt saying its the best system for Australia but if we do play only one up front, McDonald definately isn't bad at it.

He is our coach now, lets get behind him.

I was reading the papers and so-called experts Robbie slater and Craig Foster basically having a go at the decision, saying he was number 2 and not the best candidate. Get over it - we did not have a lot of choices. This guy may just surprise us

Foster on SEN on thursday had a big crack at the selection panel saying apart from Rob Baan, there wasn't any football knowledge and to me almost insinuated that Baan had a bigger influence in Verbeek getting the job because he's dutch and he'd work better with him.

Agree though, he's in charge and lets give him our full support.

I 100% agree with Foster on this.

1. Troussier would have been better, clearly better CV.
2. Only person with football experience was Baan, leading to 2 Dutchmen being 1+2.

What i have been impressed with Pim so far is his pro-active talking, embrassing the challenges, talking up his experience, so while talk is cheap (ask undefeated Lucus Neill) he's saying the right things so far.

You'd think he'll be making his way around to every ground in the remaining rounds. Hopefully they do present him to the crowd and everyone gives him a good reception. I mean for all thats been said on here he is still our NT coach and we should all get behind him.

This appointment: disappointment.

Would love Lowy and co. to get over the Dutch circlejerk, really really would.

Well said mate, im really disappointed and have almost lost faith in the fa completely than to rub salt in the wounds they hire a dutch asst to what are they thinking. They should of tried harder spent more money if they had to on quality coaches. Verbeek i wish him well but to lay our hopes on a guy who got sth kor to 3rd in the asian cup is a joke considering iraq one the cup over the saudis and the last time i saw the saudis in a world cup they lost 8 nil. What really pisses me off is that they want to persist on dutch coaches but dutch coaches cant even get their own homeland to perform and they have far better talent than us. We need a coach from italy, france or germany imo

I was underwhelmed with the decision as well but it doesn't really matter what I think as long as he has the respect of the players and gives us every possible chance of qualifying for the World Cup.

I wouldnt take a typical Italian coach unless they are elite. They are there 100% for results, 0% for style of play.

In our current position that mighnt be such a bad thing, we need to win games but I do understand we all want to see great football as well as results.

The biggest problem for Australia is scoring goals against the medium to better teams.
Playing with one striker is not the answer, we need to play with two..if it is the A League selection then Griffiths and Aloisi..if it is the overseas selection then Viduka and Kewell in a striking role.
The Dutch team is having trouble scoring to by playing only one striker under Van Basten on most occassions.
I really like the old Dutch attacking style where the players took long range goals at a whim..great to see.
With Verbeek he will be OK but remember the players he has to work with are not as good as many fans seem to think. Just watch a few A League games and some of the skills are poor to bad.
I like having Henk Duut as an assistant and Rob Baan is very good.
If we do not qualify it will not be to a lack of homework that is for sure.
By the way, I am half Dutch and love the Dutch style of the 70's which was all class and attack. A bit may rub off on the Oz team under Pim..hope so.
But if he fails, no good Craig Foster and Co. saying I told you so, we need to have a good look at the players we have to work with and then compare them to the opposition...for example several Chinese also play in the Premiership so we are not alone there !!

Hearing what you are saying, as the players we have are not as good as many think. However if we were to compare our EPL players to their chinese counterparts, do the chinese have a player who Captains their EPL club (Neill), a regular top scorer who bangs them in consistently as Viduka, someone with as much skill who plays reguarly for a top 4 club (Kewell) and goal scoring midfielder such as Cahill? As well as GK in schwarzer

IIRC theres only 2 Chinese internationals in the EPL. Sun Jihai, who cant really get a look in at Man City anymore and Dong Fangzhou who is at Man United and is rarely seen, which mind you is no disgrace for him. Zheng Zhe plays at Charlton in the Championship and is going reasonably well this season but other than that the majority of their squad is home-based.

We DO have better players than the other teams in our group but we arent as far ahead as some think I agree, you only have to look at the Asian Cup for proof. Also if we are to play with 2 strikers id love to see Dukes pair up with Scotty Mac, but Kewell is more than capable of doing the job.
