Game Day R1: Port v Brisbane

I actually think there’s a fair bit to look out for tonight.

  • Do we start like turtles like most of last season?
  • Will Butters deliver something special in his first game as a full-time mid?
  • Rozee, Finno, Marshall, Georgiades and Gray is a pretty mobile and dynamic forward line… will we play to that strength? Or just drop it on an imaginary Dixon’s head?

Those things could all happen and we still lose though.

Counterpoint:

I was at the Gabba the following year, round 6 2017. Dixon, Gray and Impey all kicked 4, Jackson Trengove 3 and we won by 83 points. Dixon picked up 3 Brownlow votes.

Fagan's first season in charge of the Brions. Hinkley in his 5th season in charge. We beat them again at Adelaide Oval in 2018 but it's been four straight losses since. We finished 5th in 2017 (and we all know how that ended) and the Brions finished 18th.

It's almost as if one of those coaches is capable of developing a team and one isn't.

Conversely, we stood in the pouring rain watching a 47pt lead at the 24 minute mark of the third quarter lead become a 20pt loss.

And tried not to destroy out televisions when a 10-goal first quarter worthy of the Harlem Globetrotters — THE VERY NEXT YEAR — became a 15pt loss.

The 37pt upset defeat up there in 2015 was also the Big Bang for “oh, this guy actually isn’t much chop is he?”.
That is 1 of 2 games my husband has ever attended. The other was the EF against west coast in 2017. He is forever banned from coming to the footy with me.

It will be a great sign if we can win though. To start the season by beating a team at a ground we've been routinely thrashed on for the last few years would be amazing.

The Chuckless forward line is my real interest for the next few weeks.

"Hey guys what's your best way of scoring as a key forward"

"Well we're 3 leading forwards who dominate with space"

"Awesome, bombs to random spots it is"

Did I hear Kenny say something along the lines of..... I have always said don't judge me on round one. Judge me after a few rounds yesterday? Take a good team etc? Mofo has already conceded.

Anyways Carn Ports

There is so little enthusiasm for this one. The worrying thing is that I learnt after 2004 that many of the same emotions the fans have, so too do the players.

The bizarre thing is that we’ve been top 4 in the last two years with a young squad. There’s no team we can’t beat on our day and we are bound to get more improvement from Georgiades, Rozee, Butters, Duursma, Bergman, Sinn, Jones, Marshall than we lose from Boak, Gray, Jonas, Dixon. Our natural trajectory is up- we should be excited but we’re not.

On paper, the forward line is ghastly.

Rozee running around in circles, Robbie running on fumes, Finlayson a giant question mark, Marshall doing whatever the hell he does. Georgiades or bust really.

The terrifying thing is that it'll probably look worse in real life.

Up to lycett to set the tone and if the opportunity there jump hard into their ruck at first bounce
Why am I not surprised that your football knowledge is so piddly that you don't even know who Brisbane's ruck is?

Jesus, 6 hours before the game has even started and this is already more of a Ken thread than it is an actual gameday thread lol.

I actually think our midfield could be ok under Montgomery so best wishes to him that he can expand on the strengths which Schofield started.

As for the forward? I think we can compensate for Dixon's absence, but a team with Todd Marshall playing key forward is not a premiership capable Port team. And I'm worried about our small forward stocks too. SPP and Gray NEED to hit the scoreboard well if we're putting Butters and Rozee on the ball. And fingers crossed that Finlayson and Mead can have the impact we are hoping for.

The defence is my major concern, especially against a Brisbane team which get the run on us so easily. I think we lose nearly every matchup against Brisbane's starting forward line, and that's even without Hipwood in the equation.

There's no such thing as an admirable loss, but if we can keep the margin to 20 points or under than I couldn't write off the entire season on a result like that. Although once again it all depends on the fashion of the entire game. If we show mental exhaustion as a result of last year's thrashing and concede massive momentum shifts at ANY point of the game, it's gonna signal a shit year awaiting.

Disagree. On paper it’s full of possibility and could play in a different way to what we’ve seen since Dixon joined.

In reality it will probably be “ghastly” lol
