Review R1: Port v St kilda Review

I think star player from home today was the player numbers, there wasn't a single time that I couldn't immediately tell which was the Port player and who they were from that alone.

Petition to bring back those numbers full time

Easy game to review. We played an insanely high risk forward press for the first 3/4 and St. Kilda were good enough to punish a very high percentage of our mistakes.

In the last quarter we turned off the kamikaze and our defenders actually played on or behind their forwards.

Also, fitness.

I was disappointed with Dixon when things weren't going his way and then he really stepped up and imposed himself on the game. I thought Pittard played one of his best games for us. Hombsch is going to be one of the all time great defenders. Our midfield seemed to disappear at times and looked hesitant during ball ups due to our inability to win the hitouts. And the usual suspects of R Gray and Wingard were outstanding and looked a class above.

Jasper has turned into an absolute bully of a player. 2013 at the Etihad, he gets thrown to the ground by Riewoldt resulting in a bit of jumper punching by Boak and Nick. 2016 at the Adelaide Oval, Jasper just runs through Nick Riewoldt as if he was a small child.

Sam Gray is a very impressive footballer which will take me several years to get my head around. He's not had a bad game since the first half of 2015. His one gear is elite.

Dixon's inaccuracy could have really cost us - actually, it did, as twice his misses resulted in end to end goals. Obviously not all his fault, but it shows how important an accurate shot at goal is.

Rob and Chad are just top of the line footballers. Their performances will make or break out games this year.

Broady good. Westhoff good.

Lobbe bad, bad man. Like, stand out bad. Our defense as a whole was awful for a long time too.

Was the case when there were subs and no interchange and will make somewhat of a comeback now with reduced number of interchanges.

Hmmmmmmmmm no I don't agree that its a bad thing. We observed in preseason that with reduced rotation, whoever scores big early can be hard to claw back for fitness reasons, so playing a forward press is not insane in itself.

Its a bit like what happened in one-day cricket where the traditional view of being conservative early in the order was flipped on its head (I think by Sri Lanka?), when the top batsman started off slogging and taking chances to set up the game, where in test the early order were there to bat much more defensively.

As a rule we need to be super risk tasking early, then we can get conservative when we are asserting control.

5 goals they scored by really bad turnovers....then the rest by our bulls*** set up allowing easy goals out the back...

Thinking about it our backline was good....did saints score any goals from a mark inside 50....i cant remember....or just even a conventional beating us one on one

Can I just say that if ever Telstra or the AFL offer Livepass for free, knock it back. It ain't worth it, I spent all game trying to sort players by blocky beard textures and non-blocky beard textures, and the Peter Burgoyne shaped Wingard head

Interesting - the video for the International feed was good. Obviously Telstra maintain their low standards for their captive Australian audience.
