Don't have time to make a long post, but anybody calling Hartlett soft or lazy after that game can eat a dick. You don't have 4 smothers in a game if you're soft or you're not working hard enough. Sometimes a player can just have a quiet game (his first in nearly two months, by the way) without it making him a lazy tradebait spud. Especially when you're getting thrashed by the best team in the competition.

I've just reconciled myself to the fact that Macca has a hard-on for screwing Hamish whenever he can, because it justifies his earlier, premature decision to rag on him for not working hard enough. He got it wrong with Moore when he was justifying him being left out of the team, and he'll be wrong with Harlett as well.

Totally unnecessary post.
People on here should call it as they see it and if that means going against the group think then IMO even more so.

A guy who avoids a lot of criticism on here is jay Schultz. When was the last time he played a decent game?
Just about every single week.

Serious question. What is your expectation?

EDIT: Serious question 2
If Roughead (or Gunston) was the only stay at home tall forward, how many goals would he have kicked?

Hawthorn's foot skills were incredible, reckon I saw them turn the ball over by foot once and that was late in the fourth quarter. Too many goals over the back and spoiling to bad areas, hard to know who to blame, probably most of the team has to take some responsibility for a lack of pressure upfield which resulted in a panicky defence.

The umpiring on the other hand was atrocious. It would have made no difference to the result but I lost count of the goals they scored as a direct result of a free kick in the first half. Not only that but there seemed to be two different sets of rules for each team for most of the day, that number 15 may as well have put on a Hawthorn guernsey and been done with it.

I think people see the trade Hartlett and get confused. I'm positive the people who are making the suggestion aren't basing it on receiving a bag of chips or that he doesn't have talent. I'm sure most wouldn't een be implying he's lazy in nature, I would suspect it would be impossible to be on an AFL list and be lazy.

It's more he isn't delivering to his potential. If he got 30 possession average we would make finals most years IMO. But I'm losing faith that he is going to deliver that. I agree he's had injuries which has potentially slowed his development but I still believe he should be further along his bell curve.

The facts are AFL will move to an American model eventually with players moving more freely.

As I have lost a bit faith and clearly there are some of us, it's obvious we should be trading whilst his perceived value will be higher.

Whilst he is collect mid teen disposal and drifts through half a season I think he is easily replaceable, look at Rich to Hamish. Rich looks more desperate in all facets. If Hamish could step it up to 25 possession ave I could/would likely change my mind. But we need another key forward desperately and I'd be willing to role te dice on Boyd

I think people need to adjust their sights and look at Harlett more like the next Stuart Dew, not the next Jason Akermanis or whoever.

The free kick was for Wingard dropping into his back after the initial tackle/duck was deemed play on.

The umpire called play on, then holding the ball, then reveresed the holding the ball call after he realised the player was injured.

Yep good point. Not Stuart Dew as such but that type of "thing".

ftfy ;)

Oh great so Hamish is going to Hawthorn after retiring!!!
Yeah, but if he plays in a Port premiership first I take that deal every day of the week!

I like the thought but I wish I as much confiedence in hamishes field kicking as I did dew......dew every kick he had was pure quality and you just knew he would hit someone on the tit 50m away...I can't say the same for hamish

They (Hawthorn) just seemed to be everywhere. They really knew how to man up. There was no space to kick to. They also ran hard - when they turned it over they were able to get back to their forward line quickly. I hate Hawthorn. :(

I particularly hate Sam Mitchell and his dirty off the ball acts ... he must get away with that at least once per game. And don't get me started about Luke Free Fricken Hodge

Eventually they did, sure.

Choco made Dew kick well within his maximum range most of the time though.

From our key forward? Goals, marks when the ball isn't perfectly placed.

How many of these has he given over past month?

The number of people who wanted Dew hung drawn and quartered after kick ins against Brisbane would probably disagree.

I haven't read this thread yet and only got to see the second quarter ... BUT ... even though we won the quarter Hawthorn were the better TEAM.

We played like a team coached by assistant coaches and they played like a team coached by a "team" coach helped by assistant coaches. This is not meant to be a massive criticism of Hinkley but it probably shows the part that he lacks experience in.

Sure we won the quarter but
We weren't fluid they were.
We played negative footy, more worried by who our opponent was, they played according to the structure they had on the park.
Freeze the game before the ball gets kicked to an area and then again after the ball gets there. By the time the ball gets there they had the numbers, the right mix of talls and short AND the players were in the right spots. Usually with someone free either in front or behind the contest, whereas we were all over the place.
When playing guessing style football you will usually end up second best.

Last week I said it was a good game to learn from for both players and coaches, going by the second quarter and the team selection I am not sure the coaches learned that much OR they did and it will take time for the players to adjust, but the team selection IMO was not quite right and the coaches still have some way to go.

I have no idea about the other quarters but individual brilliance/effort is what got us in front in the second quarter and the scoreline flattered us. I now have a feeling the final result may have been the same.

wrt player rating etc, we were beaten so badly structure and team play wise that (for the second week in a row) I don't think it would be a fair reflection on the individual players.

EDIT: One minor player review
Lobbe: Everything else is coming along fine but the time has come to start clunking some marks.

Has he been beaten in the ruck duals this year? has surprised me with his leap, tap work & his willingness to get down & dirty, certainly not a spud as some around the place have been preaching.

You know how those camry drivers are though noddy....

That was mostly Tredders though

Not sure there is any rule to say that you can only bump someone who has both feet firmly planted on the ground. We all complain about the physicality of the game being taken away "the bump is dead" blah blah blah and then someone lays a good bump and we bleat like someone has stolen our first born.

I was going to be a little more aggressive in my reply, but your avatar seemed to calm my nerves.;)

What I will say, though, is that Hawthorn seem to have AFL approval to play "unsociable" football. Other teams then do the same and find their players being dealt with by the MRP.

Mitchell shouldn't have played this week. Lewis should get cited this week and perhaps Mitchell again. If Burgoyne took Logan high, under current interpretations, he should also get a holiday. I'll watch, with interest, to see if any of these incidents are even looked at. My bet is they won't be.

Luke Hodge also seems to bring his own whistle- your team is well protected by the umpires (especially #15 yesterday).

In saying all of this, Hawks were far too good and deserved the win. Port are not at that level...yet.
