Review R18: Adelaide v Essendon post-mortem (...please don't disturb our team, we're dead tired)

Don't kid yourself we are a long way off contending, at least 5 years away. The current squad is not winning a premiership.

Tex, Betts, Talia, Jenkins, Lynch, Sloane are all in decline and will need to be replaced.

We've stuffed our opportunity to win one after 2017. Window is shut.
Talia by and large has had a good year, the others though.... they're close.

And most have at least 2 years left

After the Geelong and PA losses, both second half fades like tonight, I suggested the players were overtrained during the bye and have come back tired.
The Crows' running etc was fine to get 30 points up ... but Essendon ran and ran us out of the game, just like those other 2 losses.
So we should inject more young players to allow us to at least try to half these fade outs.

They're near cooked too, our SANFL side get by being better players for the most part.

He looks a potential A-grader to me.

Your selections baffle me. WCE’s flag last year was in no small part due to the injection of pace and enthusiasm by Rioli and Ryan.

First year players Miers and Clark have been instrumental in us being top of the ladder to this point. They will both be certain starters in our finals side.

Collingwood had a debutant and a second gamer out there last week in an interstate game their top 2 hopes hinged on.

Even an oppo fan like me can see how completely stale the Crows’ selection policy is.
We've beaten that horse to death here unfortunately.

The coaching group is just consistently unwilling or unable to accomodate young talent. There is no imagination or long term thinking involved in selection, it's about who can best fit into the pre existing structures for that week.

Our best performing player in the last couple of months (O'brien) may never have gotten a look in had Jacobs not been injured.

Yep.
No argument from me.
Other teams in the Top 6 have done well from playing youth. If we had landed Rozee and Lukosius by some drafting miracle, they'd both be rotting in the SANFL as well as the rest of our kids.

Well, it's the fitness program then and Pyke hasn't "lost" the players, easily "fixable" if that's the case.
No, the younger players are coming to the end of their first year. They're tired, it happens.

I think we all know it.

There needs to be a clean out, and it will not happen. Some of the rusted on bits of our club will hold us in this crappy pattern until someone (cough Phil Walsh cough) shakes it up right down to the roots.

The worst bit about tonight ... I saw it coming and it didn't really upset me AT ALL.

I liked the way Essendon were playing, and I thought it was a good contrast to whatever it was our coaches have us doing.

Tex isn't the problem, Tex in that forward setup is a problem. Same goes for Eddie.

Jenkins is a problem. Mackay is a problem. Atkins is a problem. Hartigan is a problem.

Our coaching panel is a problem.

Our selectors are a problem.

Our board are a problem.

We have wasted another year trying to do our best. How is no one seeing this at our club ... How can they not see that an approach that looks no further than this week's result gives results like we have been getting for 20 years.

Hopefully we don't waste the next generation of young players on the same failed system. We have talent to burn, and my god do we waste it.

I wish our club would just admit that we cannot win the premiership in 2019 ... and do everything it can to win one in say 2021. But alas. It ain't gonna happen.

Thats probably a fair comment but the reason I mentioned him was more about his age and where this group currently sits. I dont think the group I mentioned will be part of the best 22 when we are next contending, I think we are miles away personally.

I think Pyke has more to answer to with regards to last years failed camp.

It seems to me he has lost a large number of this playing group and he isn't getting them back, this group is shot IMO.

Do u think the players are unfit? With that collective minds crap and then all the Hammies of last year, the fitness guys turned down the running. Maybe scared of pushing them to much and having the same issues as last year.

Our mids can’t go a full game

Pyke is giving the Crows more scoring shots per game. It's up to Hart and the forwards to perform.
Half forward has been a massive issue for us this year. We get the ball at halfback, chip it around the middle and then have no one to kick to and opt to kick it mostly to an outnumber near the boundary deep in a pocket where even when we do mark it it becomes a very hard shot.

The difference in forward structure from teague to hart is stark and not in a good way

reminded me a lot of the showdown.
only reason i didn't switch it off when it looked like we were gonna get smashed
Same against West Coast and both Geelong games, also the 1st Showdown early in the season, they came back at us very hard late after leading by 40+ points they got back to 12 points and we only managed to regroup and hold them off.

Most of them signed on, I'm not sure they have turned on him.

Talia is the only one who could conceivably play in our next flag tilt.

Missed the last 3 quarters as I had to go to a concert (Charly Bliss). It was really, really good so I can’t pretend to be mad atm. But Christ it reads like the Neil Craig Special is back!

Oh well. It sucks but I’m glad everyone (including opposition supporters) can see that something is very wrong right now and no one got sucked in by the big win last week.

Hopefully we’ll see more action than Tex saying ‘heads will roll and no one is safe’ before Gibbs CEY and Douglas return next week

Saw this "trend" in the preseason games against Port Power and has continue all season. I remember reading somewhere that they are doing more aerobic running this year (as most AFL clubs are) and it might be cooking the type of players we have on the list more.
