OVERVIEW

Well a disappointing end result but i'm going to buck the trend from all the doomsdayers and say that there were plenty that I liked about tonight. As I said there was a lot of razzle, but not much dazzle. If you are going to bring fireworks and have an orchestrated sing along then you better bring your A game out of the field, which we didnt.

To the positives and I thought our ball movement for the most part from the backline to the edge of the forward 50 was very good. We switched the play regularly with purpose and we were able to find more space to move the ball quickly than what Sydney normally afford their opponents. This wasn't an issue of game plan or structure for me, but just like last week, was an issue of execution. I think the stats show that we had plenty of the ball and had many more inside 50s than they did. We were able to control the play for large portions of that game but for no reward. I thought we played well in the first half and even in that third quarter after Sydney kicked a few quick goals we were able to have that footy in our forward 70 for about 7-8 minutes but without putting anything on the score board. So I thought in the aspect of movement we played quite well. Our backline for the most part also held up well considering some clinical ball that was going inside the Swans 50 for much of the game.

I agree with Ford though that we played bruise free footy. Gone were the performances against Geelong and Hawthorn last year where we physically beat them and absorbed whatever they wanted to throw our way. Instead we had Buddy knocking our players over like skittles every 5 minutes.

I made 4 notes on my footy record that I thought we were poor in:

1) Skills - Our skills especially going inside 50 are deplorable at the moment. Again I dont think this is a forward structure issue, but just a case of us not being able to deliver the ball correctly to our forwards. Its like we had a midfield full of Jay Nashs out there this evening. If we weren't over shooting players on the lead, we were putting it on the wrong side so our forwards had to double back and were immediately out of position, or we were just pin pointing kicks to Sydney players. They must have taken about 20 intercept marks in our forward 50 alone. But then maybe it is a structure issue. Maybe our mids are kicking to where they expect them to be but they aren't there. I dont know. It was a big issue last week as well.

2) Decision Making - An off-shoot of Skills. Our decision making going inside 50 was terrible. Some of the decisions we made in other parts of the ground were poor.

3) Awareness - We didnt seem to recognise how quick Sydney were at times. we seemed oblivious to what they were doing at others. Simple things like Hombsch getting turned inside out by Towers that should never have happened, or Redden dishing off a handball to Broadbent then standing still like a statue as he watched Broady get mowed down from behind without shepherding or even letting Broady know he had a player on his tail, or Jonas handballing to a voice that happened to be Mcveigh in the goal square, or Ryder deciding to handball whilst flat on his back after taking a great grab to noone in particular. We just lacked awareness and when you do that against a hyperactive, in your face team like Sydney you are in trouble.

4) Midfield. 2nd week running we've been unable to stop our opponents from waltzing the ball out of the middle. We have a highly rated midfield on paper, but at this point, they've been lame ducks at stoppages this year. We cant compete against the best teams if our midfield doesnt come to the party.

Am I concerned we are 0-2? No. I'm not concerned we've lost this two games. I am concerned at the things I mentioned above however, which give some reason as to why we've lost these games. Freo and Sydney are 2 of the best 3 teams in the competition. There is no shame in losing to them. Disappointing? You betcha. The end of the world? Certainly not. I think we need to remember that Premierships aren't won in April. The last two years we've burst out of the blocks before running out of steam mid year and towards the end of the season. Maybe we are hoping to peak at the correct time this year.

Player Reviews
The Best

Pittard - Thought he was our best player by some way. Gave us great run from the backline, constantly tried to create something and whilst he made one or two mistakes, they were only through him trying to break the lines and get us moving the ball quickly into the forward line. Defensively he is almost unrecognisable from the last couple of years. Super strong one on one and was almost never beaten to the ball. One of his best games of AFL football.

Wines - Thought he was a monster around the ground. There are so many times where you think he shouldn't be able to win a contest but he just ends up with the ball. Played a great link up role through the middle and I thought did plenty of great work whilst on a flank as well. Our best midfielder on the night.

Trengove - The great man in his 100th game didn't disappoint. Beat both Pyke and Tippett on the night with plenty of great one one one work. His body work has improved over the last 18 months and his positioning to be able to work his opponents under the ball or get the spoil in is great. Loved how he hunted the ball tonight as well and won a lot of ground balls.
Ryder - We saw plenty of why we went after him in the off season. Led well, took some strong grabs and to end up with 2 goals was a fine result. We looked the best in the ruck whilst he was in there as well. If he can have this output every week, I think he's been well worth it as a recruit.

Gray - Super strong showing once again by Robbie. Won countless amounts of the footy and was our only mid to regularly win the ball at the stoppages. Its great seeing him as a full time mid this year, though I do miss him up forward. Could have provided a spark up there when we needed it.

The Rest
Boak - Had his colours lowered by Bird tonight. Bird is a very good defensive mid and he just didnt allow Boaky any room to move at all. 2 kicks and 18 handballs says it all. Probably the least effective game Boak has played since 2011.

Neade - Jakey sums up the entire team at the moment. A lot to like about his game tonight. His positioning was great, was able to find space aroudn the flanks and sometimes inside 50. His work in evading tackles was reasonable. Got a nice amount of ball up around the middle of the ground. Laid some fine tackles. But every time he got the ball, he mucked it up. Once again couldnt kick a pretty easy shot at goal. A couple of horrible skill errors kicking inside 50. He's doing so much right but the execution when he gets it is of a player whos confidence is at an all time low. He knows he has made some errors and is trying too hard to make amends. I actually think it would do him more harm than good playing him next week. He needs to go down and have a good couple of weeks at SANFL level to get that confidence back up.

Broadbent - Full credit to the Cobra tonight. Copped a huge bump that looked like a rib breaker in the 1st quarter, battled on and that moment where he fearlessly backed into the oncoming Buddy freight train was unbelievable. Wasn't his best game, but deserves a round of applause for the selfless acts he did on the field tonight.

Monfries - Played further up the ground than we normally expect and won plenty of the footy, but he just frustrates me. Keep your feet please. Please. Every marking contest he drops the knees Matty Lloyd style looking for the free if he doesnt mark it. He never gets the free so has effectively put himself out of the contest. All his opponent has to do is keep his feet and its a free disposal. Still, he was pretty good tonight.

Ebert - Such a hard runner again and thought he was close to our best player in the first hard. Went out of the game after half time and struggled with his disposal I thought. Not bad, just not at the standard he set last week.

Hartlett - Was really busy in the middle of the ground and whilst he didn't waste many disposals, its been a different Hammer to what we saw last year. He seemd a bit reserved at the moment. I know he's coming back from injury but its more a change in style at the moment that I'm seeing and not particuarly liking. Like Ebert, didnt think he was bad, in fact thought he was quite good, but just not the super damaging player we know he can be.

Cornes - Hannebury gave him the run around tonight. Got moved onto a couple of different players throughout the evening. Worst game in a while.
White - Came on and worked his butt off to run and create and did a reasonable job. Skills let him down a bit though.

Wingard - Similar to Hammer in that I think he's almost there, but there is something a little off with his game at the moment. Sydney did a great job in shutting him down and not allowing him much space to move. Seemed a theme of the not on all our best players.

Polec - Had a superb start to the game, was fantastic early, but then got completely shut down after half time. Barely saw him at all.

Impey - Nice start to the game and then was the unexpected sub off with injury. Pity as he had started well.

Carlile - Had Towers for a lot of the evening and thought he defended well. Didnt lose too many contests. One of our better players.

Schulz - Kicked a ripper goal in the last quarter, then just lost his mojo completely. Worked super hard and the kicking to him was terrible but its not like Schulz to miss 3-4 gettable shots on goal like that.

Redden - No hitouts in a half of footy from your lead ruck is not a stat that I've seen in footy before. All i'm going to say is to me, he didnt seem mentally prepared for a game of AFL footy. I dont know if he was overawed, or spooked, or super nervous about his first game in 2 years, but he just seemed on another planet for much of the night. As I mentioned earlier, the moment when he gave the handball to Broady, could have laid the perfect shepherd on one of two players but instead just walked off and allowed his teammate to get driven into the turf holding the ball summed up where his head was at for me.

Hombsch - Tried hard on Franklin but didnt have the pace to go with him this time.

Westhoff - Very surprised he had as much of the ball as what his stat sheet shows. Cant say I noticed him do a whole lot at all.

Jonas - Thought he was very good defensively and one of the better users of the ball out there. Took the game on and it almost always came off. Calm under pressure which is not something i'd say for most of his teammates.

It was a disappointing one in front of a sell out crowd, at home, for Trengrove's 100th. Quite frankly Sydney were very good and we didn't really fire a shot. As crazy as it sounds there will be some soul searching and legitimate questions after this result. If we are a true premiership chance we have to beat teams like Sydney, that's the reality. The question for me is if you can't get up for the 1st game of the season at home, in front of 50000, with Jacko's milestone, then are you good enough?

We looked like we tried but were outclassed, out tackled, out pressured and we didn't stand up to the heat. Yea we didn't get the rub of the umpiring decisions but we didn't deserve them.

I thought our backline was reasonable considering the pressure and quality they were up against. Our midfield struggled for clean possession and our skills let us down. Our forwards were ok but couldn't apply the required pressure or capitalise on chances. To me it seemed like our leaders couldn't step up - Boak, Wines and Ebert tried hard but couldn't seem to oppose themselves on the game. Redden and Ryder were beaten.

Not fit enough.

Or if its the 6 day turn around from a Perth trip??? then why didnt we make more changes to account for players who would struggle to come up after 6 days??

NOTHING says an organisation getting ahead of itself more than getting two aging rockers to wave along to their song.

The night started horribly, and ended the same way.

I feel like Port have jumped the shark in several ways tonight, going to be a long way back - but jeez I hope they can manage it.

A forward line structure of any kind would really be helpful (maybe they should have left the INXS brothers on the ground a little longer - would have been our best setup for the night.)

We matched it with Sydney's intensity early, but they were always far more clinical forward of 50. We lapsed in the third and allowed them to blow it open and there was never any coming back from there. Sydney's talls I thought were the difference tonight. Worked hard in support of each other in defence, and then did the right things when the ball hit the ground.

Our forward line might as well have not existed. Monfries, Wingard, Schulz ineffective forward of centre. Poor kicking by Schulz in the third cooked us after supreme efforts to get back into the game.

Give me back my sleep. :-(

How do you review a game like this...

Something has changed in our game plan what is I have no freakin idea
Teams actually study is right now. We are a young team.
Premiership favourites like Freo and Sydney are used to it we are not. Back is in, 2 rounds gone only. We will get better.

We need a forward setup. When lobbe is back we will be a lot better. He is a silent talent. Put Ryder into HF so we can have two big leading forwards. That's what we needed tonight.
