A few weeks ago if you said the Grays would have a combined 68 possessions the first response would have been that Sam Gray must have played well to get 18 possessions. ;)

34 possessions each, that was no between Russell Ebert and me we have 4 Magarey Medals performance. ;)
Yes because now they are playing him in the right position (Sam I can). We have been calling for a while now for The Archie's to play a full game as he has always looked the best of the younger types. It's great to see them doing well,it's a pity this has happened about 8 weeks to late for our season. After last night I'm back in the how in the hell did we lose to Carlton Brisbane mode. I know you have to accept and move on but watching last night was a mixed bag of emotions. it's a game I will never forget sadly.

We played some tempo footy - actual played the 3 ways I interpreted Ken's 3 way comment, some helter skelter footy, some medium paced footy and the slower pos3ssion taken some time of the clock slow their momentum down footy.

Some balance in our game style.

They've been working on it all year and it's taken a while to get the balance right.

Chuckled at Isaac Smith saying he was glad his opponent didn't go the push and shove - he said he lined up on Justin Westhoff and figured Westy is 20cm taller and 20kg heavier than him. :D

Come on, Port Adelaide aggression.

Yeah, but it's Westhoff. Westhoff is 20cm taller and 20kg heavier than Jarman Impey, but I'd feel much less safe if I had Impey after me.

Saw the game from level 1 close up last night.

Our toughness really stood out. We also denied Hawthorn their game and that smooth ball movement.

The Hodge incident (which happened in front of me) was one of the most dangerous deliberate actions I have seen on a footy field. We could have been talking about a tragedy this morning. He must be dealt with severely by the MRP as that dog action has no place in the game.

Hawthorn supporters are seriously delusional! Their board is just a joke. I mean they are blaming the umpiring? what the hell? I love watching them lose. They won't be getting another flag gifted to them this year, I am pretty sure WA will set them straight or even the Western Bulldogs. They are slow and overrated now. Port really showed them for what they are last night, whiny, arrogant, tossers, and when the umpiring doesn't go 100% their way, they struggle big time! Their players seriously need to look up the word modesty and get a grip. They are no longer the best in the comp! Also, the way they carry on with the umpires shouldn't be tolerated, especially hodge. Just so happy we won. We may have not have made the finals this year, but I think if we play like that next year we are definitely going places.
The bit I can't fathom is that in what universe is the free paid to Wingard in the last quarter not a free kick? It's not just the Hawthorn supporters, the majority of the commentators thought Gibson had no case to answer. What am I missing?

Congrats on the win.

I just wanted to commend the Port supporters at the ground last night in your cheersquad. Loudest and most passionate bunch I've ever seen. I wish all fans were like that. The Port players are very lucky to have such a vocal and passionate supporter base.

As for the side, well, you should be playing finals this year. You'll be back there next year without question. Exciting times ahead and I definitely don't want to meet in the finals again.

Quality post. Appreciated:thumbsu:

Too many times, in the first half in particular, we got numbers to the contest, but noone would actually attempt to tackle the hawthorn player with the footy which let them get most of their cheap goals over the top, which was the only way they scored goals all night. And in the end I felt they were lucky to only lose by 22 points.

Everything else was superb. We showed intelligence like we have rarely shown under Ken. It was so methodical and calculated, that we just picked them apart, and for once this year I can actually say this game was won in the coaches box. We weren't always just playing on looking to the corridor, but were patient and waited for that option to open, and we executed. Imps kick to sammy gray over the top of the hawthorn press in the centre corridor typified this. Fox Footy highlighted the tactics used to stop hawthorn getting forward. Not necessarily manning the mark but stopping the easy 20m kick over the top that hawthorn do so well, which forced them to go long to our advantage with Hoff, Paddy, Jonas, Hombsch marking or killing every contest. Kudos to ken and co.

Top 5:
Chad Wingard - hard to believe that a 20 and 4 game is just par, and thats even with a quiet 2nd quarter. How is it even a contest between him and cyril? No a stretch to say he is the best player in the comp right now.
S. Gray - So composed in traffic, clean skills, gut running to every contest, and that huge hip and shoulder on Gibson was straight up baller. Who would have thought playing an on baller, on ball would work?
Ah Chee - has gone so far past Moore, and to a lesser extent young. Has everything a midfielder needs, plus has the weapons to be a damaging forward. Whats the bet that the other mob think cam ellis-yolmen is better?
R. Gray - What else can you say?
Ryder - unfortunately for matt lobbe, paddy ryder showed why he must be first choice ruck. Through the year we looked so much better in stoppages with paddy in ruck when both where playing, but as sole ruck he did more in every department of the game than what matt lobbe has shown this year.

Ah **** it.

Just makes the bewildering ups and downs of this season hurt even more.

This isn't a "glass half full moment" - it's a "they never poured anything in the glass to start with" moment.

Absolutely ****ed off.
Stunk it up and played crud all year to miss finals, then when season is over we play like gold and lose draft position.
No probs in hoping they go out to win and bust their boiler - just ****ed that Hawks were down just enough to let us get the chocolates.
An honourable 1 goal loss would have sufficed.

That's all it's ever been. That's why I've been a evangelist for our game style while others have cried in vain. Last night validates my belief that this team will get where they want to go.

The Hawks are the Bad Boy Pistons to our Chicago Bulls circa 1989.

Perhaps Ebert is colourblind? I am serious.
Nah, I'm colour blind but could always tell the difference between white shorts and dark shorts and black guernseys still look different to light and dark grey vertical stripes. ;)

I know I haven't been on the forum much lately and I have not been able to watch the game today but I'm very glad we won it. However a part of me gets a bit disappointed that a team capable of beating the Hawks twice in a season has done so badly at times. All we need is a bit of consistency...
It isn't that uncommon for teams to have a down year in the AFL and then make the top 4 on the ladder the year after.

We'll need someone to replace Schulz and hold our forward line together (Dixon) and if we get, that who knows what can happen.
