Good read and no nothing new but where there is smoke usually fire

If he was not going to sign his manaer would have already come out and said he wont do any thing till end of 2010.

At the start i was unsure then not all that confidet

Now its not a matter of if but when.

So does that mean if we haven't heard anything in the next month we can assume he has told the AFC he wishes to return home in 2011? If that's the case, how would you handle Tippett in 2010?

I am starting to come to the belief he will stay and he will sign a 3 year deal very soon but until he actually signs that contract he can still leave.
So this comment is simply based on the assumption he wants to go.

If he says to the club, look i want to be traded back to the Gold Coast I would put all my eggs in the one basket and go for the 2010 premiership but at the same time putting strategies in place to receive the maximum reward for our product.

The first thing i would be doing is putting a proposal to the Gold Coast football club (its Blighty – he may do us this favour ) to sign promising Sturt junior Jack Trengrove now as one of there under 17 years olds and then in 12 months time trade him back to us as part of the Tippett deal.

Hypothetically we lose him, we will want and need to receive the best junior in the country as a minimum and the only way we can do that deal is to move quickly. He will go into the 2009 AFL draft and go number 2 behind Tom Scully or even as the first pick.

We cannot sit on our hands and wait until next April or May before he tells us. We need to know as soon as possible without rushing him or Jack Trengrove will be playing for Melbourne or Richmond and never wants to come home – we need to do it now.

We will say to the GC side that for Tippets to keep developing his best spot is playing AFL football and he should stay where he is rather than playing in the VFL for 12 months. In 12 months time he can be traded, we will trade Tippet for Trengrove and something else.

Ideally we sign Tippet for a 3 or 4 year deal but if he want to go – we have to receive a 10 year prodigy in return.

If this was a full draft ie not partly compromised, would Trengove still be top 5?

I think Trengove has just turned 18. Does that mean he can't be one of Gold Coast's priority signings?

Trengove is not eligible for selection by GC as one of their 17yo kids.

GC can only sign players born between 1 Jan 1992 and 30 April 1992. These are the kids who would have been considered "bottom aged" before the AFL changed the rules - they're now ineligible for the 2009 draft.

To put it another way... if Trengove is old enough to qualify for the 2009 ND (which he is), then he's too old for GC to sign as one of their 17yo kids.

Well their ya go. I guess we just have to sign Kurt Tippet and be done with him. :p

I would say if we have not heard in 1-2 weeks he has told the AFC he will weigh things up at the end of 2010.

Which would be code for im going home

But Judd wasn't traded under the compensation rules.

We have no idea what the fomula will be, only what it takes into account.

I hope they reward teams, because there WILL be players taken.

So if we haven't heard anything by round 1 next year how do we use him in 2010? Do we continue to use him as we did this year and potentially hinder the development of a McKernan or Davis?

I wish we would just find out one or another, this has been dragging on for too long.

Do you think we would get a top 5 draft pick for him though? If Chris Judd is worth pick 3 and pick 17, I don't see how we will get a top 5 for Tippett. A young player of his potential is worth a top 5 but it doesn't mean we would get that.

If it was as simply as saying to the GC 17 – we will give you Tippett for the services of Trengrove i think they would do that. 1 it gives them a gun player who won’t be looking to leave as he is a local, 2 it removes any doubt about their star rookie player (Trengrove) leaving and 3 with Malcolm Blight in charge this will only straighten the allegiance between the 2 clubs.

But as he is too old to be considered under this system – we need not worry about it.

I agree this COULD drag on would not say its dragging on just yet, however if its not done by the end of trade week then i would say its dragging on and it dont look good

We use him next year as our key forward the go to man simple as that cant say well if you wont be here in 2011 then you can go play for Westies.

Na, disagree with that. We have to keep playing him as we need to showcase his talents as we need maximum return. So rather than sending him to West Adelaide where that wont happen, I would play him in the ruck and utilize those 12 months to nurture someone else as a key forward.

Of course he may and the strong indication is he will sign a contract to stay but we need to play him.

I agree we need to put a time frame on this.

I think thats what Birdman was saying. You would think that if he doesn't sign, 2010 will be a very uncomfortable year of footy for him.

Yeah i agree so ultimately if he’s already made his mind up to leave, we have to accept it and move on. Acting like children and saying, go play form West Adelaide will only make the crows look bad. If the situation got that bad then we could just send him to go play for the gold Coast side in the VFL. If he stays in Adelaide and we don’t play him in the AFL; this won’t be any good to anyone.

Read me post again thats what i said regardless of what he does he is our NO 1 forward 2010 our go to man

If he does decide to go home, I would imagine his teammates would find it hard playing with him in 2010 knowing he will be deserting them at the end of the year.

3/17 and a quite good young player.

If we lose Tippett to GC, we'll already be getting screwed over - for a change, I'm actually pretty confident that the AFL wont screw us over again by shortchanging us; I'd be surprised if we weren't very well compensated.

And yes, Tippett would demand a top 3 pick.

For what it's worth I think we have two advantages in keeping Kurt appart from the teamates, culture and premiership window points which have been mentioned and are also quite valid. Firstly if he signs a three year deal now and does a knee next year he would have the insurance of guaranteed income whereas if he waits to see his worth next year he could end up with far less in the long run (touch wood this doesn't happen but he is a 200 cm player that throws himself at the contest). And secondly he is currently contracted for next year at fairly moderate amount (possibly 150 - 200) which is all he will get next year if he goes home the year after, but we can make him a new three year deal now of say 500 a year which would be giving him at least 300 more next year. This would go a long way to evening out the salary cap advantages that the Gold Coast would have over us in any negotiations. It would be the equivalent of 650 a year in his first two years at the GC if he only gets his 200 next year. We also have the option of front ending his contract as we have 4 or 5 on the veterans list next year who will all I believe have only half their salary in the cap meaning we would have more available for our other young kids in the years to come. Regardless I feel the club needs to be responsible in this negotiation as after watching the Collingwood game I am convinced that Danger, Vince and McKay are every bit as important to our future as Tip and I would be devastated if we kept Tippett at the expense of these kids.
