I’ve realised the final round of F1 is this weekend in Dubai as it is in 2025

So I’m not sure if it is a destination once the Race is over?

Well it’s actually in Abu Dhabi which is roughly 140km’s from Dubai but I hear ye. One of my close mates spent 30 years working as a Civil Engineer in Dubai and for one of those my youngest brother was based there too with his accounting firm. So we took advantage of that and turned a trip to the UK for The Ashes into an excuse to actually stop in Dubai for a couple of weeks on the way back rather than just the usual transit.

It was in August 2009 and the heat was beyond belief. We arrived at midnight from Heathrow with high humidity and an overnight low of 37C and the days were 48C+ with the same sapping humidity. My mate said “yeah that’s why the Indian construction workers get sent home for a month, it’s too humid!”

He lived in the ‘burbs between Jameira Bay and the cricket stadium which stood in the middle of nowhere at the time. My bro lived in an apartment building near the beach.

We loved the heat, having a pool to spend most of our time in. My brother wore a suit and made it clear it was a nightmare when meeting clients as he had to find a park close to the front door or he’d arrive having sweated right through his entire suit, let alone his shirt.

We did plenty while there and our local expats showed us around.

Dunno Gifo, it was fine to visit. Very different. My mate plus his wife and kids knew many people there so they were well established and loved it. They had a house keeper from the Phillipines who did all of the cleaning, cooking and babysitting etc and they didn’t pay any tax. They’re back here now. Spent a year in Melbs but had become too accustomed to the non stop heat and hence sold off a couple of their tax free acquired investment properties in Brisbane (where they said it was also too cold ffs) and have setup camp in Cairns. My bro enjoyed Dubai but was glad to be back in New York when his year was up.

As far as visiting for a week or two, we’d have done it again for the break from Winter, but not to do anything we couldn’t do in any tropical location closer to home. It was an experience at least.
