My eyeballs. Go look it up on twitter if you’re interested. It’s pretty grim though.

Can we get a better source, considering how frequently you get tricked by misinformation?

There's a lot of misinformation being pushed by racists online about the Syrian Rebels. IE this was already debunked a couple weeks ago;

Is really that hard to believe? Their leader was a member of ISIS and Al Qaeda.

He’s not a different person just because he was installed with the help of Israel IMG_5362.jpeg

I spoke with my wife’s sister in law (she is Syrian) at their Christmas lunch the other day and asked how her family was doing. They have said it’s the first time they have had a steady supply of electricity (mentioned perhaps the Americans were controlling this?) They were also very upset at how Assad had left. Were also shocked to see the conditions he had prisoners living under . They are also fearful of what may happen to them given they are a minority there but hadn’t mentioned anything specific at this stage.

I’m not going to share the videos of a beheading

But here’s some other stuff happening

I have no doubt there are some really shitty people capable of doing some very bad things. Im not going to start looking for beheading videos on twitter.

As far as I can tell, there is no credible reporting of widespread oppression, but that is obviously a very strong possibility.

Mate they burned down the Mausoleum of al-Khasib and killed the caretakers yesterday. It’s only going to get worse.

So Laura loomer has a dip at apartheid Clyde so he responds by cancelling her subscribers. Lolllllll.

It’s amazing that so many got worked up about perceived Twitter bias a few years ago, now this neo nazi chud is turning it into his own campaign and policy vehicle.

It’d rather those racist nutcases fighting than aligning

I've heard that certain minorities in Syria supported Assad because he was secular and baathist (its sposed to be a secular Pan Arabic movement.) As a result he protected those minorities from persecution. Alowites were one I've heard reference to.

Yes, this is sort of accurate.

Some cohorts did very well under Assad.
Most did not, however.

There's strong parallels to the fall of South Africa's apartheid regime. For the white Afrikaans, life was pretty good under apartheid. For everyone else... it wasn't.

I'm not suggesting it's a clean like-for-like comparison, to be sure. But there's strong parallels in Syria with different religious and cultural groups who were clearly brutally oppressed under Assad's regime.

Things have clearly escalated quite rapidly in the last 48 hours . I just got home to my wife’s parents and they are on the phone with family desperately trying to get them out of Syria. My wife’s mother in law said that these rebels are actually extremist Sunni linked ISIS? 😳

Yeah unfortunately the term "Syrian Rebels" is a large umbrella term for several different groups who opposed the Assad regime.

ISIS and HTS are two extremist groups that fall under this umbrella. No denying it.

(But there are also multiple "Syrian Rebel" groups who do not fit the description of Islamic extremists, and who in fact actually oppose those extremists too).

Are you suggesting the Alawites behaved like white south Africans? Or that minorities should be oppressed?

ohhh

I'm not suggesting it's a clean like-for-like comparison, to be sure.

Why bring up the comparison then. Are you saying that particular ethnic groups abused and got rich off the majority of Syrians?

Yes there is definitely an element of truth to this. But (as with all things Syria) it's not really possible to distil extremely complex and dynamic sociological circumstances into neat little analogies.

As an over-simplified example, Alawis and other Shiite groups prospered, whilst Sunnis and Kurds were brutalized.

However even that isn't a clean summary, because there are Alawi groups among the Syrian Rebels, and Assad's army had a high percentage of Sunni soldiers and officers.

So... yeah. It's not a clean comparison.

Are you ****ing serious ? How didn’t they know that? I was going to suggest earlier that they should get out of there but assumed that they already knew

FFS. You were told what this was and scoffed.

Israel put in a jihadists group and jihadists do as they always do.

Sorry bengrina if that was harsh. It’s the media gloss up of a rebranded ISIS, Al Queda that I’m angry at.
No stress mate, no offence taken . They have been quite concerned since it all happened and the very likely threat against them based on their religious beliefs. They were initially shocked at how quickly it all moved . Basically 72 hours for complete overthrow of existing system . They had mentioned how radicalised these ‘rebels’ were. I’m unsure why they have held off on trying to leave . I’m happy to ask any questions any of you may have on the current circumstances as they are literally right in the middle of it . We often take it for granted but we are all so blessed to live in this country.
