Autopsy Rd 8: Dogs battle bravely and come up just short against Hawks

Its time to recognise the fact that this list is the equivalent of many Footscray sides from the olden days.

There is an elite core, but it falls away quicker than a skydiver without a parachute.

We just witnessed the first of the thuds that will reverberate through the club for the rest of the season.

We. Are. Garbage.

Can’t be disappointed if you don’t expect to win ;) saw this result from a mile away. I will genuinely be surprised if we win another game this year that’s how bad things have become. Will be good to get a high draft pick atleast!!….. oh wait

I've got nothing to say about that cesspit of a game, but want to mention one thing - for a player with such faultless endeavour and courage, Liam Jones deserves more team success than he's ever been part of in the AFL.

Was too raw in 2009-10 to be part of either finals series, then spent time in the side during our Macca years, leaving at just the wrong time. 7 seasons at Carlton including 4 bottom 4 finishes, 2 spoons and no finals. Leaves Carlton just before they come good and now he's stuck in this team on a road to absolutely nowhere.

At this point he's unlikely to ever experience finals football in his career, which is a damn shame for a player of his calibre and career duration.
100%.

Khamis needs to spend every training session wrestling with a taller, stronger opponent in marking contests. Teams have him totally worked out. The Hawks thew Sicily forward , despite a popping shoulder & a badly rolled ankle. It was almost as if Mitchell was sending Bev a message, 'You sacrifice this lad. He cannot play this role . We will not allow it. Listen to us other coaches Bev. We know what we are doing.'

Totally beaten on the floor tonight, it used to be one of our strengths but we were so poor below the knees.

Anyway, as I said last time, this is our level. I'm laid up sick in bed and pretended I was a neutral. Good game.

One of the worst offield games I’ve ever witnessed from the footy club. Imagine having Bont on the bench for 7 minutes in the final term. He has all week to rest up. The rest of us are going to work tomorrow.
Imagine having VDM in the team?
And Gallagher too, he’s had a good run should have rest a couple of weeks ago.

Two weeks in a row as well, add to that Macrae just 70% game time (team low, except for subs). That’s two players who actually hit targets inside 50 tonight stuck on the bench for long periods of time. Unacceptable.

You can really see the effects of the off season review kicking in this season.

The changes in approach we are seeing is light years from what we saw in those final matches against Hawthorn and West Coast last year.

Kudos to the club for saying enough is enough and drawing a line in the sand.

Genius move by Bev sending Richards up forward.

Goal, assist, and a hand in another. Almost won us the game.

Makes up for playing him out of position the last two games.

Might not be enough to save his arse though. Who’s ordered the truck load of manure??

Put the coach aside for a second and think about the reasons we did badly. Some stuff on the margins with our own forward of centre ball movement, stoppage work etc was poor but we let Hawthorn have 33 shots on goal from 49 inside 50's. Some of it was pressure and up the ground structure but a large part of it was the failures of the defenders to defend, as well as the quality of their ball movement to stop shallow turnovers. Bramble, Khamis, Johannisen and O'Donnell all had horrific games. Duryea okay but didn't get into the game. Jones was still poor relative to the fact that we're banking on him to be our best defender, though the standard should be not woeful.

It's beggars belief that we had Richards and Williams as capable defenders on the ground but nowhere near defence for the game. That's on Bevo.

People here and Dogs fans have criticised Keath, Gardner etc over the years. Be careful what you wish for. Even in their worst games last season as a duo (and there were plenty of bad ones, their ability to do the basics of closing down space and not being outmarked was never as bad in one game as O'Donnell and Khamis today. That is the reality.

Losing to Richmond next week might be the end of me. Literally.

What a shambles of a club at the moment. I can't believe that I'm actually happy I didn't go today. That's almost a sacrilege, something I've rarely said in all the years that I've been a member.

Where to next? I'm dumbfounded.

Can we please just stop f…ing about and sack bevo already. Today was so predictable. throws players around and no change in the biggest issue which is our defensive structure. what a waste.
