Autopsy Rd 8: Dogs battle bravely and come up just short against Hawks

Two weeks in a row as well, add to that Macrae just 70% game time (team low, except for subs). That’s two players who actually hit targets inside 50 tonight stuck on the bench for long periods of time. Unacceptable.
Our seasoned players were all we had tonight. Massive drop off in talent and effort after our top 6. Bring in newbies and shatter their confidence. Hawthorn had the same quantity of newbies and they excelled.

Macrae under utilised for sure, frustrating. Smashed in effort tonight, could have used him out there for longer.

Put the coach aside for a second and think about the reasons we did badly. Some stuff in the margin was poor but we let Hawthorn have 33 shots on goal from 49 inside 50's. Some of it was pressure and up the ground structure but a large part of it was the failures of the defenders to defend, as well as the quality of their ball movement to stop shallow turnovers. Bramble, Khamis, Johannisen and O'Donnell all had horrific games. Duryea okay but didn't get into the game. Jones was still poor relative to the fact that we're banking on him to be our best defender, though the standard should be not woeful.

It's beggars belief that we had Richards and Williams as capable defenders on the ground but nowhere near defence for the game. That's on Bevo.

People here and Dogs fans have criticised Keath, Gardner etc over the years. Be careful what you wish for. Even in their worst games last season as a duo (and there were plenty of bad ones, their ability to do the basics of closing down space and not being outmarked was never as bad in one game as O'Donnell and Khamis today. That is the reality.
keath, gardner, Trengove, Talia, Roberts, JOD....CHB has been a disaster for Bevo

and yet we recruited a generational CHB?

One of the worst offield games I’ve ever witnessed from the footy club. Imagine having Bont on the bench for 7 minutes in the final term. He has all week to rest up. The rest of us are going to work tomorrow.
Imagine having VDM in the team?
And Gallagher too, he’s had a good run should have rest a couple of weeks ago.
This happens in nearly every game when the ball is stuck on the opposite side of the ground.

The minute that the runner gets across the ground to tell a player to get off the ground is a minute that the opposition gain an advantage around the ball as the two players transition on and of the ground.

Our backline is just so poor. Another bad one for Buku and JOD, I’m not convinced JOD makes it. Time to give Busslinger a go for one of them.

Through in the fact Williams, JJ, Bramble and Dale can’t defend, and Duryea is cooked, it’s not wonder we leak goals.

This wasn’t just a loss to a bottom four side, at home. It was a loss to a bottom four side with a first gamer and the corpse of Jack Gunston as KPFs. That Hawthorn kicked almost 100 points against our basically injury-free defense is an enormous indictment on the coach and his players.

Any self-respecting club would make the move now, but we all know it won’t happen. I’m not sure what it will take, but I’m among the many (and growing) supporters who will invest no more time and money in until the necessary change is made.

Coaching aside, the majority of the playing list is an absolute embarrassment. Almost every one of our so-called half backs have zero interest in defending and only care about front-running. It’s diabolical. Our supposed elite million-dollar key forwards run into each other all the ****ing time even though they have a paddock to run around in, it’s so ****ing stupid and basic it’s unbelievable. And the less said about our AA ruck the better, except if he can still get a contract offer from any other club across Australia I’ll drive him there myself.

I trust three players on this team - Bont, Libba and Jones. Everyone else needs to take a ****ing long hard look at themselves, because they are meant to be elite athletes and professional footballers and they currently act nothing like it.

That’s the type of game I’d be yelling at the tv and getting more and more annoyed as the game went on.

Today I sat and watched without a care in the world. It’s not a surprise anymore and it’s just time for Beveridge to go and until then I don’t really care anymore

Same for me actually. I've never been less fazed by a shitty performance. The apathy was a nice change. I'm actually looking forward to dispassionately watching how far we can slide with this team now.

It's OK everyone, the board and executive have this thing under control.

I've never been so apathetic to the club in my life. Good to see I'm not the only one. I'm up for a 2014 style clean out.

If the message internally is that Bevo is gone if we don't make a prelim then why not just do the right thing and **** him off for both parties sakes? We're not going to make the finals so why persist with someone that isn't going to be there next year?

Macrae under utilised for sure, frustrating. Smashed in effort tonight, could have used him out there for longer.

The coaches stubbornness on using English, Bont, Libba and Treloar in the centre 90% of the time is a huge part of the problem.

We smashed them in clearances tonight and look what happened. Sometimes it doesn’t matter if you win the clearance, it’s how you end up losing the ones you do.

i only watched about half of it, saw an early score and suspected this would happen.

ive never had less care about the outcome of our games, but then ive been wanting Bevo out for many years now

Khamis needs to spend every training session wrestling with a taller, stronger opponent in marking contests.
The bloke is a very generously listed 192cm player with a lean build. There's a physical limitation to him as a player that we can't pretend doesn't exist.

The centre bounce wasn't the problem. We kicked 4 goals to 0 out of centre bounces. You yourself said we won clearances. Much the opposite of being a huge part of the problem, it worked, which in order for the game to be a loss, showed you how poor the defensive 7 unit and our pressuring half forwards and wings were.

I’m genuinely interested to hear from the Beveridge isn’t the issue crowd tonight. Again incredibly poor on defensive transition, a complete inability to utilise the huge height advantage in the back line and a forward line where the talls rarely separate.

you just pointed out the facts that are 100% coaching. poor defensive transition is due to game plan of too aggressive a zone. inability to use height and separate is same issue every week and again coaching. we have a talk forward line and do not hold and structure forward of the ball and flood too far back. doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result is poor coaching. he moves players because he has no other ideas.
