Reasons The Saints Can't Go All The Way

Seriously. Once again you need to look a bit deeper than the grass under your feet.

We lost to Geelong and Hawthorn.

Umm.. who do you think you'll be playing in the finals?
Maybe not Hawthorn, but Geelong. Add Bulldogs, Collingwood, Essendon (i say the Dons cause they can play the G well with their run).

Read my post Naught5,

I said "No one is arguing we were a good team last year."

We obviously are this year. Hawthorn are not what they were last year, neither it appears are Geelong.

You miss my point. It is not the "G" that has given us problems in the past, it is who we played there. This year we are obviously a better team and in better form than we were last year.....

No matter who we play or where we play our chances of winning this year are far better than last year.

Dont be fooled by 2 losses.
1 loss they had 8 players out (or some ridiculous amount).
the other they played you at the Dome without Steve Johnson and lost by a goal.
Geelong are everything they were last year. possibly better.

Geelong are everything they were last year. possibly better.

They may end up being but right now they are not. Last year at this time they were 16 - 0 and under $2 for the flag.

This year they are 14 - 2 and are only flag favourites by weight of early season money.

The losses have occurred in the last 3 games and the only win was against the 15th side by just 36 points.

That is not flying.

Incorrect, please try again.

OK 15-1 and had won their last 5 by an average of 80 points. If you want to argue semantics, no problem. Fact is they were travelling better.

Rounds 12 -16 scores,

108 - 49

182 - 47

124 - 46

118 - 44

131 - 70

If a guaranteed top 2 spot, 14-2 record, players coming back after rests heading into finals as probable flag favourites isnt an example of flying i dont know what is.

And last year they were 15-1.
This year they lose 2, one to saints by a kick without they're best forward.
And another to Brisbane without their 8 of their best at the GABBA.
Last year they lost 1, by 86 points to Collingwood on the big stage.
That would have been more of a worry than the 2 games they've lost this year.

Mate, you have to put things into context. You can't go picking out sentences without reading the whole post.

IT IS RELATIVE TO LAST YEAR!

Yes last year we got beaten twice at the G. By Geelong, who were flying and by Hawthorn who won the flag.

Does that mean we are no good at the G? ...NO. It is a bit like saying Bangladesh lost the test to Australia at the Gabba.....therefore they must have trouble playing at the Gabba.

WHAT"S DIFFERENT THIS YEAR?

Hawks are struggling and Geelong are not flying in the same sense they were last year and Saints are flying in the sense Geelong were last year.

Does it start to come together now?

Would've thought that Carlton supporters would have more things to worry about than the 2 (and a half) frontrunners.

Could the Saints win the flag? Highly likely. They are a good team playing well.
Could the Saints fall short? Also highly likely. There is much footy to be played until the GF siren.

I think they can go all the way to a flag..but, it wouldn't surprise if a team comes up and knocks them off before the finals.

This can only be a good thing, in that it makes the playing group even more hungry for success.

When we dropped that game to the Dogs in 2000, it virtually guaranteed us the premiership, in by it made the players were able to approach the last month in hungry and intense form.

There's every reason to suggest that Footscray again might be the team that beats the raging hot favourite in a game. That's what makes Saturday night such a juicy match-up.

The only thing inherent to the Saints that might affect their chances is that the style of footbll they've played all year may be hard to maintain for 22 rounds plus finals.

Oh another worried about Dawson and Kosi missing this week.

Here's your 2 replacements: Gardiner and Maguire.

I fail to see how those inclusions make St. Kilda any worse - if anything they improve them further.

Haha, I actually said that Gardiner and Max replacing the two probably makes our team better...

Love Zac, but love Max more.

Can't see Goose getting a gig, we'd be way too tall defensively. And he can't play on smalls as effectively as Max can, plus lack of speed. All gonna make it tough for him to get back into the team. Here's hoping he can though.

simple my side geelong has them covered. The saints pulled of a 1 goal win in rnd 14 at the dome.geelong had no steve johnson that day who is our best forward and one of the comps best 10 players , plus the fact that the game was played at the dome were the saints are simply a better side than they are at the G.both factors = a 4-6 goal swing to geelong, plus st kilda jumped geelong and ottens may come back and the game meant more to st kilda and geelong are more focused on september than stkilda
the saints have the better talls and better rucks , geelong have better everything else

Somehow, you have to reward the form he has shown for Sandringham...I know he's kicked a fair few goals there this season so perhaps have him in the goal square as Kosi's replacement maybe?????

True, he's been one of Sandy's bests multiple times. And seems to be able to switch between a KF and KB position pretty easily. Would be handy to have another one in the team to go with Goddard.

Definitely worth considering. He kicked a couple bags of 5 in a row a few weeks back. Similar player to Kosi in his contested marking and ability to crash a pack.

Nothing would please me more to see Goose take a pack mark and kick a goal in his 100th against the Dogs this week. :thumbsu:

The Saints deserve respect and can win the premiership this year. But there is still alot of footy to be played between now and then. You dont have to be the best team all year....you just have to be the best team on GF day to win the premiership.

Not the point.
The Dawson ruling is ridiculous regardless of who we have to replace him.
As I said...the equalization policy being implemented?

some recent history

giansiricusa on kosi = 0 weeks
melbourne player on ball = 0 weeks
trent west on xavier clarke = 0 weeks

steven king on sam power = 4 weeks
steven baker on jeff farmer = 7 weeks
zac dawson on brad symes = 2 weeks

Paddy Ryder = 0 weeks
Michael Gardiner = 1 week
