Link to the proposed Referendum, from the Referendum Working Group:
(Edited 6 April 2023)

These are the words that will be put to the Australian people in the upcoming referendum as agreed by the Referendum Working Group (made up of representatives of First Nations communities from around Australia):

"A Proposed Law: to alter the Constitution to recognise the First Peoples of Australia by establishing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice. Do you approve this proposed alteration?"

As well as that, it will be put to Australians that the constitution be amended to include a new chapter titled "Recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples".

The details would be:

The Prime Minister has committed to the government introducing legislation with this wording to parliament on 30 March 2023 and to establishing a joint parliamentary committee to consider it and receive submissions on the wording, providing ALL members of Parliament with the opportunity to consider and debate the full details of the proposal.

Parliament will then vote on the wording in June in the lead up to a National Referendum.

The ANU has issued a paper responding to common public concerns expressed in relation to the proposed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice here:

Summary details of the key points from this paper may be found in Chief post here:
The Uluru Statement from the Heart:
Not specifically No. In any case it does not form part of the Referendum proposal.

Seeing as things have gotten a bit toxic in here, let's try to return things to a more civil tone.

The following will result in warnings to begin with, and if said behaviour continues will be escalated:
  • referring to another poster as racist without direct provocation.
  • dismissing or deriding another poster's lived experience.
  • personal attacks or one line posts designed solely to insult or deride.

You might notice that the final rule is from the board rules. Thought we should probably remember that this is against the rules in case it's been forgotten.

Let's play nicely from here, people.

Lidia Thorpe is doing more for the "no" campaign than the "yes" campaign. People will vote no to spite her.

Hopefully she can keep her cake hole closed between now and referendum.
... you know she doesn't support the Voice, right?

Isn't she pro no anyway?

Did the Angles bleat on generations later about the Romans invading England? Did the Romans later complain about the Saxon invasion? Did the Saxons and their descendants do likewise after the Normans conquered England? Most people groups in the world had been invaded countless times before Europeans even knew of Australia. Australia because of it's geographical isolation was spared all this until relatively recently. There's even some evidence that there was another race or people group here before the Aboriginals and were wiped out. If the English hadn't come here then it would've been the French, Dutch or Portugese. I don't think Aboriginals of the day would've preferred that outcome.
Didn't you ever read Ivanhoe?

Man I heard that lame "argument" in the 80's.

I doubt anyone is voting out of spite - surely no one is that small minded.

Anyone who votes for shitty reasons like that shouldn't be allowed to vote.

why has lurch shown an interest in alice springs all of a sudden? an interest conveniently timed to coincide with the 'the voice' referendum no less

theres more than a whiff of nudge nudge wink wink racism here ..... history will not treat lurch kindly for this ... and rightly so

Better than it was during Apartheid You don't have a majority of the country being viciously downtrodden by a tiny minority.
The place is undergoing slow motion collapse. Can’t keep water running, can’t keep electricity on. But most telling thing is you don’t live there anymore.

If I was a black South African I would have been given a primary school level education in a language other than my own with servitude as my only future. This a legacy of Apartheid and the current government is trying to deal with giving a reasonable standard of living to millions of functionally illiterate people and that's an incredibly difficult thing to do. In a country where racial issues are still everywhere just putting it down to blacks not being able to govern which is your obvious inference here is pretty ignorant.

They could import workers to help them fix their problems but no one wants to move there because crime is so bad. The ANC aren’t trying to deal with it, they are completely corrupt. Nothing will ever improve there, it will just keep getting worse little by little every year.
