Craziest part about this is he went out of his way in the pre game interview to say how similar we are.

Said we are at similar stages, similar wins, similar age.

I bet he really believed they would win the game

Billings we know is a quality player and he's tank isn't that bad.
As we saw against Collingwood/haw
Today was first game in a month

Acres is a different kettle of fish
Think he needs more confidence and just increase his intensity.
His kicking needs work aswell
Billings is a little smooth moving jet but Acres is the type who could be anything. I agree with those who say you need to see him live. I'm overseas so didn't get to watch it but I still have the last Dees game in my mind. His greatest asset is his ability to just get free of his man seemingly with out trying. He runs on quite unusual angles which makes him hard to run with. His work in tight is Dal Santo like. Should be our best player one day still in my mind. I think I said in 5 years.

the thing I notice with Acres is that when he has time and space, I feel he over thinks things and will make a poor decision.. However when he has no time to think he plays on instinct and will do something that shows why we have such high hopes for him.
Once he plays a string of games and gets more confident in himself and his role in the team I have no doubt he'll explode

Given that we were completely dominating the game by early in the 3rd quarter and had kicked 7 goals in a row (by 5 minutes into the 3rd), only to then not kick another goal for the remainder of the quarter that we dominated so much of, it's pretty safe to say that if we'd kicked half decently we could have been 60 points up by about half way through the 3rd and Melbourne likely would have folded and we could have strolled to a 100 point win, so it ended up being a real missed opportunity to jag back a chunk of the % that we lost in the WC/Adelaide games, it's fair to say.

So that was disappointing, but given how vulnerable I thought we were going into the game (due to being without a "genuine KPD", plus Savage and Webster, and Paddy up forward and Roo not he same since the Adelaide game, etc) it was still great to at least get another win up and there were some real positives in it, like the freakishly good form of Gears, the continued good form of the T-Train (Membrey), Weller and Hickey and also seeing Gilbo continue on from his improved form of last week and look much more like his old self again.

Get one or two back for next week's game and if we bring our pressure from the start we could be in it up to our eyeballs.

I'm really confused by Roos' comments. I mean, how is a ball clearly touched on the line a bad call? How is elbowing a defender in the head not a free kick? Perhaps he should focus on the free kick in front of goal (which Hogan missed). The one where Hogan grabbed Dempster, pulled him off balance and yet the umpire only sees the Dempster hold afterwards? How opposition coaches keep bringing up stupid decisions when the get the rub is just beyond me, do coaches understand the rules of the game?

Roos going to Melbourne is an embarrassment on the game. Dees get fined for 'not' tanking, get a handout far exceeding the fine, get a Frawley disguiswd PP/compo pick, an AFL appointed coach and ceo (or was it president), then proceed to marginally improve over his tenure.

Roos says before the game both sides equal, then when they lose convincingly its because we played veterans and he is going through a different type of rebuild. Yeah Roosy, the 15 year type...

The number of first round picks that club have been given and failed to develop is higher than any club, its deplorable. No other club away from the plastic teams have been given as many chances in the modern era to be successful but still they keep up with the same old dribble about rebuilds.

Don't even get me started on his, we don't have a Dangerfield type player who can kick 4 goals from the midfield. Pretty sure no other team in the comp bar Geelong this year have that.

No team will have success if their coach doesn't want to coach and only sees $ signs.

Anyone who thinks Roos was good for Melbourne is nuts, yes they may play finals when we do but its a natural result of a 15 year rebuild not some washed up coach who is sounding crazier than Kevin Sheedy in his prime!

End rant... ah, that feels better.

Good to see the kicking drill at the draft combine that Petracca failed so miserably two years ago was an accurate indicator. He's a 6ft version of Tom Boyd, fat, lazy, arrogant but 7 million bucks poorer.

As far as Roos goes, you only have to speak to Swans players who played under him to find out that he's a first class **** wit and a novice strategist. We can now add sore loser to his cv. Ross Lyon was the brains behind Roos' tenure at Sydney, closely followed by horse, Roos was just the puppet.

One last thing, he gave up Josh Kelly to speed up their rebuild, that worked well!

Geez Newnes played some sort of game. Seems to always make the right decision with disposal clean as. That defensive effort on Gawn in the 4th quarter was elite.

I think we've found a good team balance. We've added speed with Minch, McKenzie and Wright. Blokes who can all stick a tackle. I think that's making a huge difference to the pressure we apply. We look faster and tougher at the moment. Hope we don't make any changes for the Bullies next week.

I actually like Melbourne so I went over to read their matchday thread. **** me there's some bitter campaigners over there... holy shit

still like Melbourne and think their heading in the right direction

happy as with the win today. haven't been to a losing game this year! :D
i will buy you a ticket for next week

I didn't see it, but on the radio they said it should have been a free to Hogan first, and then the umpire only saw the retaliation (which was the elbow). Presumably very similar to this one at the other end that you mention:

Yep I need to acknowledge the contribution of Minchington, McKenzie and Wright their pressure was phenomenal. They are also damn quick - if they get some polish; watch out

Yes the pressure was exceptional.

At times it seemed like we had an additional 5 players as each time Melbourne tried to escape from our forward line there was another wave of saints tackling and pressuring them. Then when they eventually got the ball clear up bob Geary and Roberton to finish them off.

Im with ya brother!

It took one of the all time great individual quarters of football from Nick Davis, a Grant Thomas Saints team falling apart, an AFL lawyer working on the Barry Hall "in play" hit and a once in a lifetime mark from Leo Barry for Paul Roos to become a premiership coach.

Absolutely kissed on the dick by the footy gods and one of the biggest frauds in the AFL.

Make no mistake, they will go backwards next year as Goodwin adjusts the team to playing a more modern style of football.

I also love that he has a sook about our experience advantage in Roo, Joey, Steven Dempster, Gilberts uhhh.... Ross. Lol!! Seb Ross ay?

Didnt Roosy go and target guys like Vince, Cross, Dawes and Lumumba to provide that same experience? Where are they Roosy?

Also the name of the "big man for the Saints" is Tom Hickey. Staggered that he didnt know it after he dominated Gawn in both games this year.

Finally, if ya wanna get out of there Tommy McDonald you would be more than welcome at the Saints. You would be playing 3rd tall/loose and swapping at FB when we swing Hugh Goddard forward. Just stop trying to take the game on, clutch your intercept marks and dish it to the halfbacks and you will be sweet! Might even get to have the #25 if you ask nicely!

No, not at all. The elbow in retaliation was brutal and a result of Dempster niggling from behind, maybe one of 'those' soft frees that forwards sometimes get when the umpire is not looking at a contest neutrally - the types you just shake your head at because it's called a 'contest' and happens literally 200 times a game. If, and a big if, it was a free - I would've reversed it anyway with the elbow to the head.

The one in front of goal was a just plain horrible decision. To paint a picture, the Dees got a scrubby centre clearance that went out to the half fwd flank area, but not inside 50. Hogan grabbed Dempster by the jumper and dragged him down - mind you Hogan was facing Dempster (not the direction of the ball 40m away), Dempster struggles to regain balance and grabs Hogan the same way Hogan has him, at no time did Hogan loosen his grip though and it was clear as day who instigated the holding. It was just a shocker at an awkward time, given because an umpire was watching the big name forward waiting for the jumper hold against Dempster to happen rather than the situation.

From the Dee's board - read it and laugh

""But in saying that a cpl of shit decisions by the umps ie touched goal and Hoges getting reported instead of a free kick and we are right in it.."

A behind is now a goal and you get a free kick for elbowing someone in the head.

+1
Spot on "rant". Alas the messiah has feet of clay and is absolutely on a par with the whinging Scott brothers. Fancy bringing Ross Lyon into it! Sour grapes from an unclassy guy. Whatever anyone thinks about Richo, the man has class.

First of all, it was clearly touched and was a bloody good decision to see it.

Secondly, what difference does it make to the play whether it was just a free kick or a report...?

Did you get that quote from Paul Roos?

played in a cricket flag with the goal umpire, was an absolute cracker of a decision from him

Acres has to be undroppable after that, surely

I accept Acres is young and learning his craft. But aside from his hand off for a goal in the last, his mistakes resulted in 2 Dee's goals and 3 times his opponent ran off him with the ball like he was stuck in quicksand.

Is very slow, hands are only sometimes clean and he is not an elite disposer. His size seems to be his biggest asset.

I thought his game yesterday maybe gets him another week but he would want to have more positive impact than he did against Dee's.

Melbourne. Rebuilding since the Beatles were top of the charts.

Holy ****.... LIKE!

I've always had a soft spot for Melbourne since I was born because my grandparents including my deceased grandfather support them. But this is EXACTLY why I can't stand the Demons now.

I was 10 when they last beat us can hardly remember the game lol

I was 27... I was at the game, and I have only seen my beloved Saints play live three times since, I moved to London four months later and then to Italy and on from there.

It was a shocking game, we were so far ahead, and then over the course of an hour we got hauled in, its how I imagine Dogs fans felt last year when we pulled them back from 47 points down at half time. Like a Thunderstorm you think will pass you but and then it just keeps on building, quicker and quicker... Next thing you know your drenched, but you feel like you had more time and could see it coming.

I thought we had a real chance that year... My Grandma was the first female member of the Melbourne Footy Club (and the first female member of any footy club in Melbourne from what we know) so Ive always had a soft spot for the Demon's. But after that game, and every since, Ive loved it when we beat them!
