Ricciuto to lead in 2007

Do you really think Ken would make a good captain?? Same goes for Burton, they just don't really seem captaincy material. Infact looking back on this thread and almost every single player has been named as a future captain!
How about Nick Gill?? Or maybe Greg Gallman whoever he is.

Well McGregor not so much, but they are the only 2 players in that age category that would atleast get a mention, and they would put their hands up for captain. I could see Burton being captain, he is a great player and a great leader, but i couldnt see McGregor.
Everyone will get mentioned, the media will pick out who stands out from the rest in skill wise, and pick out the rest from leadership, so everyone on the Crows list, would probably get a mention of captain (cept the Rookies, and the 1st year players). but really anyone is up for the job

1 probelm i do have about Reilly, i picked up from basically every centre bounce that he cleared last year, is that he kicked the ball hurridly out of the centre, he never really looked up and aimed for a target up the ground, he just picked the ball up and slammed it on the boot and hoped it went somewhere to our advantage, that is where he needs to work on a bit, cause last year most of the time it fell into opposition hands.

Yeah his disposal can be rushed at times. How often do you see him under little to no pressure, run to 50 and spray the shot.. usually out on the full.

The other thing with Reilly, is that off the field he seems a little 'shy', not sure thats the word to use, but he never smiles or says much...suppose that could be worked on, but I can see were you guys are coming from regarding his status on field.

He's never really stood out, or wowed people in a game. 2007 will be a big year for him, he really needs to step up to the next level to show us what he's made of :thumbsu:

Remember a bloke named Mark Bickley??

When he started learning his mid-field trade, that was his specialty - the blind slam on the boot. As he became more experienced in the hurley burley of the centre bounces, he became far more selective with his disposal both by hand and foot. Reilly is going and will continue to go down that path, because he is a footballer who wants to improve.

He actually played a major leadership role in 2006 at the centre bounces as he called the shots on the play most of the time when he was on the ball.

I actually do see him as a possible future leader of the club. Plays in the centre and is far more articulate than Rutten when involved with the media.

Rutten is also a possible captain, but I do not and never have liked my skipper playing at FB. IMO they have to be where the play is or at least near to be effective. even when a player is lining up for a shot on goal, you'll find that Roo will be there right behind them, talking, settling and encouraging. Rutten can't do that from FB.

If VB continues his development of the past couple of years during 2007, I'd take the punt and appoint him for 2008 onwards, in spite of his tender years.

He is the greatest natural born leader I have seen or heard for many a long year - outstanding.

It's VB for me. :thumbsu: :)

How could I could I forget about VB  He certainly is a good chance, he proved a lot in 06 and with a full footy season in 07, he'll be tearing the AFL apart ;) He shows great onfield leadership capabilities. He encourages the guys and goes that extra length for the team, like when he broke his collarbone but he got up and got a handball away :thumbsu: He also is great off field, very nice guy :thumbsu:

I dont really see VB being captain in 2 years time, i still think he has alot to learn about the game, and the leadership acts of the game aswell, it will take him a good 4-5 years to fully come to terms about being captain, for some reason i think that.. lol. He is a great player otherwise

Rutten by a mile for me. Easily the best player under 30. Has shown leadership skills on and off field, that were recognised. Unwavering. Dedicated. Tough. Already AA.

I would speculate that a major reason he missed out on the leadership group this time is that the team decided to be conservative, seeing as they had to vote in front of others. They wouldn't want to be seen as dissidents.

Goodwin, Bassett and Edwards are too old to replace Roo. The best captains are the ones who know they have a long term in the role usually.

Burton, VB are the only others players who are close at the moment. Burton might be a little too erratic, but he has a genuine interest in the team. VB has shown he will be a great player, but isn't a truly great player yet, at least not of Rutten quality. He has time to prove himself though. Johncock needs to clean up his act off the field. Reilly, Thompson, Doughty etc aren't high enough calibre players. IMO.

I know this is a massive long shot, but i am gunna bring up Nathan Bock. He is a good player, and the Crows look kinda nothing without him. I think that if the Crows are succesful, they need Bock in the team. He just adds another dimention to the forward line. Maybe he might spring to some minds for the captaincy. But i dont believe he has that captaincy vibe about him.

Of the candidates....Rutten, Van Berlo, Thompson and Reilly, looking at training Van Berlo easily displys the most leadership on the track and has a prescence about him that the others don't have.

My guess is that it'll be between Van Berlo and Rutten with the former more favoured beacuse of his onboard role and being constantly in the heat of the kitchen

He even did that last year WW.

You summed it up beautifully - VB has a real presence about him that the others don't have. :thumbsu:

It's early days for him, yes, but he'd be my man in 2008, all going well.

All in all a good post. Just on this bit. How does Roo go when a back pocket player muffs up and the opposition are having a shot at goal...does he run all the way down and have a word?

I think football has changed a lot from my day and that the around the ground leadership will help the above situation you talk about

I like Rutten and see him as a natural leader

Don't mean to sound regressive........but I've been super critical of clubs like St Kilda who take turnsees on the captaincy to the extent that even the tea-lady gets a crack.

I just hope we're not getting too cute for ourselves.

I favour a return to a traditional structure with a captain. a vice, and a few Deputys..

ie

Captain - Roo

Vice - Goody

Deputys:

Truck Rutten
The van Berlo
Ty Edwards

I agree with PC. Earlier in the year I admitted I was hesitant about having an FB as captain, but a good leadership group would certainly include players from all over the ground, so in the circumstance that m23 suggests there would be at least a couple players within ear shot offering their support. On top of that, although FB is a limited position in terms of the ground it covers, it is also one of the most important in the game and offers a lot of stability to the team. I consider it to be a similar to the role that a captain plays more generally.

Hallelujah.

Exactly my thoughts.

When this sort of argument is raised you hear uberdefensive Saints fans retort with "all the captain does is watch the coin toss/run through the banner first/enter superficial captain's responsibility here".

With a list so young and at a club with a culture as perennially dire as theirs you'd think they'd plump for an experienced, strong-willed captain who can lead from the front both on and off the field. Aaron Hamill maybe?

Nah... let's give the captaincy to a new kid each and every year. Ridiculous.

I'm with you. Less "groups" and "players' committees", more clearly defined and coach-appointed leadership structures as it used to be.

I don't mind the so-called cross-pollenation assistants system behind the glass of the coaches box, but as far as the players are concerned I'm not so sure.
