With the appointment of Matty Knights, there are now Three AFL Coaches with Richmond as their Origin, Knights, Wallace and Malthouse,

Essendon has done OK for assistants and senior coaches.

What's more interesting is the number of coaches that come from the backline.

Hawthorn's had a lot of coaches come from our playing lits from the 80s, not all of them good:
Current
Leigh Matthews - 4 premierships, and counting?
Terry Wallace - 2nd club, results getting worse
Rodney Eade - 2nd club, results getting worse

Past yet fairly recent.
Ken Judge - Coached hawks and WCE with varying success
Peter Knights - coached the hawks with interesting results....
Gary Ayres - Coached Geelong and Adelaide, seems to do okay without doing brilliantly.
Gary Buccanara - Coached Sydney for a little while
Ben Allan - didn't he coach Freo for a little stint???
Peter Schwab - feel a bit sorry for this bloke, but he just didn't get the results in the end.

I'm sure there are others, Essendon have a pretty long list of Sheedy brand coaces
Thompson
Williams
Daniher
Harvey

Again I'm sure there's more, it's just off the top of my head.€

I call it the family tree of footy.

Look at the names Jeans, Kennedy, Barassi, Hafey.

Extrapolate to include the names of those they coached, who coached themselves. Just off the top of my head:

Jeans: Matthews, Eade, Ayres, Baldock, Stewart, Buckenara, Malthouse
Kennedy: Parkin, Matthews, Eade, Ayres, Clarkson
Barassi: Walls, Jesaulenko, Alves, Blight, Schimmelbusch, Connolly
Hafey: Bartlett, Northey, Sheedy, Patterson, Jewell, Sproule, Erwin, Malthouse (and many more)

Then you look at that list and extrapolate further:

Sheedy: Thompson, Harvey, Merrett, Watson
Walls: Eade, Lyon, Williams, Roos, Knights
Malthouse: Worsfold
Bartlett/Northey: Knights

there's plenty more I have missed I'm sure.

Hafey's legacy continues..remember, he had Bartlett and Northey? Now..who coached Knights again in the first 5-7 years or so? Those 2.

Bartlett could not coach, that was a fact. Hes teams got worse and worse
Northey could not understand what a contract meant!! Coached Brisbane and they got worse!!
Knights wait and see :p

He missed the 82 GF, not the 80 one. Hes a premiership player.

Bunged his shoulder / collarbone and then reaggrevated in a gruelling fitness test ordered by Francis Bourke at training in the week leading up to the GF.

It wouldnt have mattered if he had played as we would have flogged them anyway thanks largely to Johnno the Dominator. :thumbsu:

You are right about Hafey it was something like 18 at last count alone! To add to your list there was also:

Ian Stewart, Balme, Hart, Francis Bourke, Michael Nunan, Brett Scott, Choco Williams, Tony Shaw, Barry Richardson (I think) etc etc etc.

Throw in "Bones McGhie" who has coached 4 WRFL premiership teams including his original club West Foots back into 1st division.
