Richmond want compensation

The clubs knew that Carlton were under investigation.

The clubs KNEW that Carlton may lose their draft pick.

If it happens, it means a failed risk on their behalf. They took the risk, and they lost out on that (even though they got the players they want).

Give them an extra 5th round pick :D

picks

The AFL has can not take away Carltons picks they should be banned from next year and the year after and fined heavily. Otherwise some clubs will take the afl to court, presidents have already threatened this action.

The presidents have no legal grounding.

The AFL should take the picks away.

If Carlton are found guilty next week then I don't think there'll be any option for the AFL other than take their first 2 picks. If they don't then they'll be seen as saying "we're going to hit you with a tonne of bricks over this,oh but you can still have the 2 best kids in the country"! Makes no sense to let them keep them IF they're found guilty next week prior to the draft. The draft will then be Picks 1&2: forfeited, pick 3: StKilda,pick4: Kangaroos etc. Richmond's claim for compensation is speculative at best.

It's about time the AFL stopped d*cking around with these penalties.

Let Carlton keep their picks - that way there is no need to try to retro fix deals that are already signed, sealed and delivered.

Instead, Carlton should start Round 1 with -8 premiership points. Now that's a penalty.

so they'll finish the 2003 season on the bottom of the ladder and get the number 1 pick again, your jocking right. picks 1&2 in this years draft for cheating, and pick 1 and maybe 2 in next years draft for cheating!!

Whats the bigger of penalties though?
Think about it ...

Their playing list has little depth, they add depth and talent with Goddard and Well, but start with -8 next year.
The following years they do great with these two guns.

OR

They lose the right to these players, which puts them further backwards, the year after next they have no chance at finals because they youth development is non-existant.

After being in the competition since 1908, only now have Richmond asked for compensation. It has taken them a while.

Yes thought about that myself, Richmond is the only club in the AFL that prints, "theres always next year", on its membership cards.

Well, we have been rewarding Saints and Freo for their stupidity by letting them plunder the draft for years, why not extend that to cheating as well ?

this richmond fan thinks :

i'm not going to delight in Carltons punishment....

i'm not complaining about our off-season either.

we'll start next year with Johnson, Blumfield and a # 12 or 14 pick.

and only lost Torney, valuable player that he is(was).

Perfectly happy.

No compensation req'd.

How does Kane Johnson feel to know he wouldn't be wanted if his club needed to give up a pick 2 slots higher....
Greg Miller said on 3aw last night that Richmond still would have traded the #2 pick for Johnson but that would have been enough. They wouldn't have had to swap picks with Adelaide (in effect trading down 10 positions) in the 2nd & 3rd rounds as well. So I don't think Kane Johnson needs to harbour any ill feelings at all.

-12 points, banned from next years draft, and pre season, problem solved.

No way they will make finals, and finishing low has no benefit.

Screwing with this years draft is too problematic in the justice to other clubs. The only valid reason anyone can give is that Carlton has high picks this year. But that should not be a consideration, as the same people seem to think that Richmonds #4 or #2 means little as both are first round picks. Hence Carltons first round pick this year or next year is the same whether it is no 1 or no 15.

Take points off carlton ????? that would be lashing them with a feather, could not think of a more softer penalty, no thanks, picks one and two and a monster fine thank you.

You think ending any chance of them making finals before the season starts and banning them from the drafts of that year is lashing them with a feather?

You are dreaming. The financial cost alone of that scenario would be huge.

you are being blinded by the media driven 'pick 1 and 2' rhetoric.

I don't think the AFL can afford that penalty for the simple fact that it can't be matched next time someone breaks the rules.

I still can't see the arguement.

Everyone has a right to bitch.

Would we have traded picks 6 & 33 for Barry Brooks for instance?

I can understand Richmond's point, but if they get compensation then everyone else deserves it too & the point is that nothing should change because that's the fairest way to go, pending Carlton's stripping off picks.

Should Carlton be excluded from the pre-season draft as part of any sanction imposed if it is found guilty of salary cap breaches, Richmond would get first pick of the uncontracted players in the pre-season draft.

"We're weighing up the uncontracted list," Miller said. "There are a number of good uncontracted players of whom Richmond Football Club may have the first pick."

Powell was one of those, if he did not reach agreement with Melbourne. So, too, was Brisbane's Craig Bolton.

Hows Richmonds form .......Complaining if Carlton get excluded from the draft then they should be compensated for the draft pick they traded , then to come out and say that they are looking forward to having first pick in the pre-season draft instead of the Blues..................DOUBLE STANDARDS

What a load of crap.

Just poor journalism. How flawed is that article.

Just a suggestion and i dont think it has a great deal of merit given the AFL will never compensate the teams that lose out due to their trading. Obviously, the 2 teams effected most due to the salary cap bungle are Richmond foremost and than Fremantle. If they were to be compensated, I would say Fremant le retains its 5th pick, Richmond its forth, Brisbane moves down to 3, Roos to 2, Saints to 1...
And North get Johnson seeing as Richmond effectively traded nothing. Bloody good deal for Freo and Richmond, talk about have your cake and eating it too.
