i remember vividly 1987 when he beat A Jarman out for the Magarey
I could look it up but since we're stretching vivid old memories wheres the fun in that - think ant was 83 before he went to essendon and Gary McIntosh beat out jars in 87.

Nostalgia aside the ceiling on this kid is unlike any I can think of. Outside of a cruel injury run he looks set to be a star

As Bruce would say Thilthorpe is going to be something special.

Said a week ago that Dees defence is going to be vulnerable for the rest of the year without Tomlinson where the opposition have 2 or more quality tall forwards... though Bullies tonight haven't been able to take advantage.
Dogs defence looks weak too

Bruce is the Bulldog's 2nd "quality" tall forward? He goes missing against good teams and is a Dixon clone, Thilthorpe is already better than Bruce.

Pretty wild that two months ago his forwards coach said:

“Riley’s still working on his game. It was great to give him an opportunity, but he needs to learn to use his body at that level,” Rahilly explained.

“He can cover the ground really well for a big bloke, but most of the time at that height, you’re in a contest.”

The fact that a 5 game player, playing against older more experienced guys, already has the best 1v1 win rate, as a forward (!!!!!) is just freaking outstanding

there are no guarantees, things happen, but man what a freaking phenomenal talent

Yeah, I said earlier in this thread how I was talking with an Ex Port Magpies player about how I'd rather we went Holland than Thilthorpe and he kind of put me in my place ( and you have to accept their opinion because they kinda played and starred at early mid 80s SANFL when it was strong) and he was adamant, we made the right pick.

Probably going to have to face him in a month or two and admit that maybe, just maybe he was right...again.

oh god no. Richo was actually the bionic prototype for Tippett. Maybe part running man, part Nick Gill.

Richo was a terrible footballer, he literally could not play football. He was a fantastically athletic praying mantis who was so big, such great hands and a decent tank he could execute individual plays at a high level. He was a collection of moments, sometimes impossible plays stitched together to make a games output.

see ball, get ball was perfected by Richo. For a large part of his early career it was a running joke how uncoordinated he looked, and how good he would be if he could learn to play footy, fit within a team structure.

He was so good with his hands you could almost hear him squish the air out of the ball when he marked it.

apparently intellectual colossus’ Jcpdragonx Kenny Dee earlsta
All disagree without sharing their enormous wisdom and counter views! 🤣🤣

I was too young to have watched this but read about it

In 1984 as a 19 year old Paul Salmon had kicked 63 goals in the first 13 games of the season. Then did his ACL and had a full reconstruction, year off.

Returned and was a very good player but supposedly never captured the agility he had pre-knee injury

I wonder how 1984 Salmon and 2021 Thilthorpe compare?
Salmon was a sensation in that season and played for Victoria in the 1984 state match at Footy Park.
Because of his height SA resorted to playing a ruckman (Max Parker) against him.
He kicked 5 and at the other end Kernahan kicked 10, in a classic match.

Anyway, good signs from Thilthorpe, although probably not quite at the equivalent Salmon levels just yet.
It is a different era though, Salmon had more space to work in, more one-on-one contests and didn't move away from the goals too much (except when he rucked).

one of the key reasons Salmon left Essendon is he wanted to ruck. Hated being consigned to the goal square, but essendon wouldn’t use him as primary ruck

Good

When you realise that the reason we're struggling to come up with an apt comparison player for him is because there isn't one

He kind of reminds me a bit of Bont in the way he looks to be moving slowly but his opponents don't seem to be getting closer. He'll obviously never have the raw acceleration to play as a genuine midfielder, but he moves like one.

Nah, just tell him to wait another 6m until Hollands gets on the park. 😛
