Dow not even emergency.

Is he injured/have a niggle or completely on the outer?
He was in the extended squad for the StK praccy match, but ended up playing 2s. Didn't make the Melb praccy match team either. And that's despite an extended bench and several players rested. Tells you a bit about where he is at the moment. Needs to prove his worth.

Didn't really stand out in the VFL preseason games. He should be getting 25-30 touches with his eyes closed at that level.

He ain’t that good sadly and is quickly becoming dead wood on the list. Only thing saving him so far is his draft position as if he was drafted in the 6th round and performed like he has at AFL level he would be playing local level footy in the burbs.

You can’t nail every selection i suppose on draft day and he was highly rated as a junior but some just can’t take the next step into the AFL sadly. Voss won’t put up with his one way running and poor disposal not to mention playing scared.

I certainly think he is slow. If he wasn’t he would be that far above anyone in the AFL it wouldn’t be funny.

Weits to beat Lynch.
Then who to Riewoldt? Gov is my pick but somewhat undersized amd never had that big of a task. He would give us nightmares when the ball hits the ground on Omac.
If Balta plays forward he too big for Gov and too athletic for O’Mac.
If Nank is forward do we put O’mac on him and leave an undersized Gov on one of the other talls or do we try and play Gov on an almost 2m Nank?
We have two proper talls and one third tall who is undersized, they have three genuine talls. They also have the option of putting Martin to full forward who we have no reliable matchup for.

Same can pretty much be said for the other end of the ground though, yeah?

Harry (204cm) -> Tarrant (196cm and slow)
TDK (203cm) -> Gibcus (196cm and on debut)
JSOS (194cm) -> Grimes (194cm)
Charlie (192cm) -> Broad (192cm)
Martin (186cm but jumps) -> Rioli? (179cm)

We'll also have the odd cameo from Cripps (195cm) and Kennedy (190cm).

If Pittonet (202cm) drifts forward then Nankervis (199cm) probably follows him.

We have a much greater KPP advantage inside our forward 50 than they potentially have in theirs. They've got good matchups for our third and fourth forward, but nothing close to our genuine talls.

Indicates that the midfield battle is going to be critical.

Let’s ****ing go. Excitement just kicked in a little more. Really want our forwards to stretch their defence tonight, think H, Charlie and JSOS can give them a good run for their money, and mids to give as best delivery as possible.

It’s quite muggy out there, could be a bit slippery.

Sadly for him it's looking that way.
He's got this year under Voss to make some giant strides and see what he can make of it, but struggle to see him lasting beyond that (not sure of his contract status) if he hasn't cemented himself as a top 25-26 player at the club by year's end.

What's the go with Dow? Injured/underdone? Not a good sign if he isn't even in the emergencies...
A shame, I think he has something to work with. Would much rather be giving him some burn than Setterfield who doesn't seem to have any outstanding qualities.

Voss looks to be picking his team based on positions rather than players. He said for Dow to play, and play as a midfielder, he's got to press his case to get ahead of one of the incumbents.

Setterfield is playing a role Dow isn't really suitable for; the defensive wing. He's covering a lot of ground, getting up and down the field and guarding space to prevent/deter easy switches or the angle play to shift into the corridor. Having some height helps there too.

Going off what we've watched and checking the CBA numbers from the Melbourne preseason game, we're running a pretty tight on-ball rotation with fairly clear roles. It looks something like this:

Big dog: Cripps for ~85%. Kennedy ~15%
Supporting: Hewett ~60%. Kennedy ~40%
Distributor: Cerra ~65%. Hewett ~20%. Fisher ~15%

O'Brien is the attacking wing for about 80%, Setterfield the defensive wing for about 85%. Think Cerra starts outside the square here a bit too, plus spurts from Fisher & Martin to make up the rest. Kennedy spends the other ~20% of his time starting from half forward, being a link player or taking marks and having shots at goal.

That's it really. Dow's going to have to put in a serious effort to get ahead of those onballers. Then we've got Walsh returning soon, Carroll is seemingly pressing being named as an emergency shortly after his little injury setback. Those two could play inside or out, meaning there's more positions available for them to fit into, while Dow is really only an option inside at this stage.
