AFL Autopsy RND 22: Loss

Last 4 games we lost to the 13th, 14th and 15th placed teams, right when you need the team to show some backbone. Glad we won't make the 8 as we would only propagate the lack of a finals win since 2004. This end of year capitulation is becoming as cultural as failing to win a final. Ok we debuted some good youngsters this year, we all know however we should have achieved more with the opportunities we had. Adelaide and suns games lost to missing easy set shots. Suns game also thrown away by tackling my 10 year old's team could stand up in. Who is our goal kicking coach and who is the tackling coach - do the right thing by us paying members and find a job elsewhere.

Actually it is not a coach thing. Not saying a shake up would not hurt but it is more a footy IQ thing.
This is spot on. We are who we are and how we play because of poor recruiting over 20+ years. We have recruited a majority of players that aren't fighters, who are downhill skiers, who when the going gets tough they get going. Yes I think there has been some selection errors and positional changes that haven't worked but over all its due to the dynamic of our list. On paper we get sucked in by the names and who we (hope) they will be and deliver. The harsh reality is they can't and won't until we recruit some hard at it, fighters who won't give up. Recruit some players who are clean below the knees and make the right decisions when we need it. Recruit forwards like Caddy who can take a mark and kick a goal. Stop recruiting "best talent" available and recruit for need and recruit players who specialize in that position. Recruit/trade for a big inside mid that will complement the guys we have in there now. Would love a couple of players who have the uncompromising attack on the footy like Dangerfield, Jack Viney, Wardlaw and Jason Horn Francis. We have a team of guys who become spectators and hesitate for a slight second before making a decision to go for the ball, in that time its too late we have lost the clearance!! Hopefully Rosa can do this but my fear is Dodoro will and still has a massive influence over this department!

Interesting break down - pretty damning tbh

Missing goals is infectious, every miss piles on pressure for the next one.
Like the Carlton match - Perkins missed the first relatively easy shot then Menzie missed the second from 30 straight in front. From there the yips set in and it took a miracle to kick a goal it felt. Other matches we have been accurate and we win. It's one of the things Wright provides being a marksman, it's a shame he has been so uncompetitive.
