Our squad's kicking skills are, overall, really pretty poor. I'd back Jack Martin as our BEST kick. Nobody is perfect, but I think we are forever in danger of keeping other teams in it/fluffing our lines due to bad choices and execution of kicking.

How to improve our skills as a team is tough. Some improvement will come from system, synergy and having the best forward targets available. But it's a problem that will be very hard to get rid of as it's all throughout our list.

Look, for example, at our best starting midfielders: Cripps, Curnow, Setterfield, Walsh. Kicking isn't a weapon for any of them, none are really any better than average, and some worse. None of them can do what Shuey or Pendlebury or Duncan do all day long. In the backline, Weiters is great for a KPD, Doc more than competent and SPS looks like a Rolls-Royce (though want to see more, more often) but the rest are again average to decidedly iffy.

I fear this will forever haunt our club until the list is significantly augmented by guys who are good kicks. There are just so few Blues who you trust that given time and space they'll kick the goal/hit the target/make the best decision. It's OK to carry some who are not great/know their limitations, but it would seem for a long time we have not prioritised these skills high enough.
Stocker, LOB and a few others can’t come on quick enough. We have been drafting higher skilled players rather than continuing with the bash and crash types, seemingly with a purpose to get the team physically competitive before bringing in the skills to cut teams apart.

I'd have Setters as the best kick ATM out of that starting lineup you mentioned. Curnow probably decidedly the worst, though thankfully he makes up for it with his grunt and opposition stopping power.

That's Cunners though - bloke barely cracks a smile when he kicks a goal. Could be a bit of "Oh, that was good? I've done better..." but more likely it's just that
he's a real introvert and doesn't go for big displays of emotion.
agreed - is a quiet bloke. But nobody else in the team gave them shit, just went and got around Cuners.

Kennedy is a surprisingly good user. Another one who can kick both feet, we have a few - Kennedy, SPS, Martin, Gibbons..

Yeh, I've seen Setterfield hit a few gentle "touch" kicks which almost nobody else at the club can do. He would seem to have more scope for improvement/higher ceiling than most others.

And for sure, Ed gets a pass because he's a warrior, runs all day, does so much heavy lifting, etc. It's not about any one individual. For the overall squad to be effective, efficient and damaging, I think you can only give, say, 4-6 guys a "pass" on kicking because they do other vital things - but at the Blues right now I feel like you'd need about 15 "pass" cards to hand out.

People actually bemoaning a win. Stunning

It's like the last 10 years never happened

Oh, they happened. My therapist can confirm.

Rather than bemoaning the win, I'd characterise it more as relieved, pleased, looking ahead to see what might come next and what we most need to work on.

Agreed.

I feel like over the years we have targeted some better ball users, but some of them either didn't kick on (no pun intended) or had technically good skill but went to water under proper pressure at AFL level. I guess it's a combination of drafting and development.

I see kicking as pure confidence. There are definitely better ball users than others - but when a team is collectively kicking like pure shit, i put it down to confidence.

like when we are up and running we dont miss a target rebounding from defence running in straight lines. when we are in our shells though we miss targets and everyone says we have blokes that can't kick.

play an attractive game style that instils belief and confidence on-field, players will hit their kicks with authority and become 'better' kicks. Teaguey is doing it perfectly.

Newnes did what he has been doing all year, make some massive errors that costs us badly but then pop up and hit the scoreboard or do a really important good thing. I really look forward to the day when one of our youngsters forces him from the team and grabs their chance.

Or alternatively, the day where Newnes can just clean up those errors in defence and become a really good player for us.
Take out that bad error that cost a goal last week and i'd say he was one of our best.

Haha Cunners is a quiet, awkward unit...did you see his post-game interview on Ch 7 when he was BOG against Bombers? Looked nervous as hell and wasn't giving the interviewers much at all with his answers.

Love the guy. Part of me does wish he had a bit of fire in him like Papley though who lifts his team through his emotions.

Yep accept I think there is much more chance of a Fisher, O'brien or Dow overtaking Newnes than a 27 year old 160 game player suddenly beng able to correct an issue that hes plagued his entire career.

You make some good points, but on the other hand, Cunners being a humble, introvert would give him less media attention and by association, attention from opposition coaches and players.

Sometimes it's handy to have an offensively damaging player on the scoreboard fly under the radar !

In the case of Dow, I think his ultimate success is going to be dependent on the extent to which he will be able to correct an issue that he has likely had ever since he first picked up a footy, namely his kicking.

He wouldn't be the only quality midfielder going around with dodgy kicking, I would think he goes into the Cripps mold, handball is the first option kick long second is the second option.

Coaches' Votes

5 - Lachie Plowman (CARL)
5 - Marc Murphy (CARL)
4 - Matthew Kennedy (CARL)
4 -
Jared Polec (NMFC)
3 - Samuel Walsh (CARL)
3 - Marc Pittonet (CARL)
3 - Ed Curnow (CARL)
2 - Jacob Weitering (CARL)
1 -
Luke McDonald (NMFC)

If I was to guess I would say Teague went

Plowman 5, Kennedy 4, Walsh 3, Weitering 2 and Ed 1

Shaw Went
Murphy 5, Polec 4, Pittonet 3, Ed 2 and McDonald 1.

To me Polec was good after quarter time but got toweled up in the first where the game was won, probably deserved a vote but not 4. Couldn't tell you what McDonald did. Bailey Scott's 3 goals probably would have been my next North player.

Teague's votes make more sense to me but I really rated Pittonet's game, dominated Goldstein. I thought we were by far the better side for 3 quarters. Plowman was rock solid and took Zurharr right out of the game and deserved the 5.
