Analysis Rolling All-Australian team for 2021

Here's my AA prediction. It's not who I think should be in it, but simply who I think will be. Its based on prior performance, current performance, who plays in top teams and the biases of the various selectors.

B Keath, May, Stewart
HB Short, Lever, Salem
C Treloar, Boak, McLuggage
HF Martyn, Walker, Bontempelli
F Greene, Riewoldt, Allen
R Gawn, Petracca, Macrae
Int Nic Nat, Naughton, Oliver, Wines
Based off that criteria I would say Aliir would be in. Lots of hype, commentators have been saying he is the new Rance, plus we have Tredrea as a selector.

Anyone saying the new Rance needs probably take a step back and chill...

He could get in but he is a long way off Rance

Most midfielders in AA contention would be the same. Not overly that impressive to be honest, it’s only 6 games. He is miles away from AA

plus only has 21 votes, Mundy number 1 has 38
Clearly no idea. Walsh is starting 18 in most teams, both in this thread and the media. 5 of 6 is excellent considering we've only won 2 games.

Over a longer period, he's now polled in 13 of his last 17 games (polled in 8 of the last 11 last year). Remarkably consistent for a 20 year old in a middle of the table side.

AA selectors (and folks on here) are always heavily biased towards the players from the top teams.

Very difficult for deserving players from the bottom teams to earn AA selection. e.g. Changkuoth Jiath has been dynamite off half back in the first 6 rounds. Absolute game-breaker. Incredible intercepts and rebounds. Has hardly put a foot wrong, too. The occasional blunder, but he more than makes up for that.

I get that he's a new kid on the block, so people are treating him as a novelty act rather than a serious AA candidate.

Yet I see people mentioning the likes of Daniel Rich and Daniel Houston ahead of him. Both very good players... but I know one thing for certain: if either of those guys played for the Hawks, there's no way either of them would be in the conversation for All Australian team.

Rich is one of those defenders whose stats are always inflated from taking the kick-ins. (Others: Lloyd, Docherty, Short, Dale, Burton, Stewart, Ryan)

Salem and Jiath have clearly been the 2 best half back flankers over the first 6 rounds. It’s not even close.

I’d have Ridley next, followed by Houston, Lloyd, Rich and Impey

AA is mostly a reward for players from the Top 8 teams. History has proved that. It would be good if muppet selectors like Luke Darcy would share the love around instead of always playing favourites from the top teams.

Just on the stats being inflated due to the kick-ins, what a farce the AFL has created with that rule, absolutely ridiculous.

Oh, and Jiath well and truly deserves a spot in the AA atm. His worst game was against Melbourne, but every other game has been all quality, great find and development by the Hawks.

Excellent post.

On the kick-ins thing. Docherty has actually been one of our worst players this year (IMO), but his stats look great because of this rule. There should be some other stat called "kick-ins" which doesn't count to disposal tally. Treat it like hitouts.

Missing 2 years of footy from knee recos has caught up to Docherty imo

I'll have a go:

FB: Stewart Keath May
HB: Short Lever Laird
C: Treloar Steele McLuggage
HF: Greene Walker Fyfe
FF: Martin McKay Boak
R: Gawn Macrae Petracca
INT: Walsh Parish Grundy Bont

Few blokes out of position but can't not have Fyfe and Boak in there.

Stiff: Oliver, Allen, Naughton, Guthrie, Riewoldt, Salem, Aliir

Sydney going great but they're a well spread team without any out and out superstars IMO

Laird has been in the centre the last year and this year. If he makes the AA team it wont be at half back
