I can't identify what exactly, the poor kicks inside 50. The long breaks between goals, the low scoring that never allows you to get a sense that we are under control, the way we make a game high anxiety and low excitement....all of it. It's just horrible to watch.

100% its like our games (apart from the skill errors) are completely contrived or controlled and robotic. You know our defensive structures will be solid, but you also know we simply cant score.

The structures are fine in defence, but past the centre line its a complete calamity with no one knowing what their team mates are doing or expected to do. The inability to score is comical given the chances they get.

Lyon knows that playing an open, attacking style would result in us losing just as many games, as we don't have the talent to pull it off.
so we are not backing ourselves at the draft, free agency and trade tables to improve?

just contain the damage and go nowhere, instead of playing the gamestyle now that we want to play when we decide the list is up to it,instead of playing properly now and taking our medicine, but when the list is ready,we are ready?ok

please dont tell me this current gamestyle is the recipe to success,if so i will bury myself in my keeper fantasy teams and follow those players every week wearing their various uniforms, because this style is not the road to success

It worked pretty well last year & Max had a busted wing for most of it.
we played a proper game style last year and were exciting to watch,Max was being peppered with the ball

i admit i was fooled by RTB last year, making us a good to watch mostly successful team, now we are back to pulling teeth style and then we win a game it makes more sense to lose,if we want to play shite football,at least have a purpose like pick 4 and maybe 5

dont play shite to watch football that will never take us to success, never allow ming to play properly then get us pick 8 & have ming leave in 3 years a broken and frustrated man for a 2rdp

top 100 movie quotes surely you cant be serious GIF

what we lack now and what I think many are missing is DARE. we have none, zero willingness to go for it except when all hope is gone the players throw caution out the window like last qtr of GWS game

I feel atm we play not to lose, lock it down, don't make it a shootout.

rnd:1 5 goals to 3/4 time
rnd 3: 4 goals Q1 5 goals next 3 qtrs
rnd 4: 1 goal 1st half
rnd 5: 6 goals to 3/4 time
rnd 6: 5 goals to 3/4 time
rnd 8: 15 goals v North (our only 100 point game)
rnd 9: 7 goal game
rnd 10: 8 goal game (goal 2nd half)
rnd 11: 9 goal game
rnd 12: 5 goal 1st half
rnd 13: 7 goal game ( 3 goal 2nd half)

maybe if we lost by 30 points but still scored 14-15 goals plus most wouldn't be so upset, is the team being taught how to win or how to not lose?

I think Ross has to change, the club has to make Ross change, He's got until the end of 2025 IMO, if there's no improvement in the style them surely the club has to step in

Good business. You don’t throw good money after bad.
I don’t think Ratts had what it takes to be a senior coach.

Yes, we’ve been pretty ordinary for a year, but I’m not ready to throw the baby out with the bath water just yet.

NAS has improved. Windy, certainly.
Owens a little disappointing after a very promising start.
Pou, second year blues - it happens.
Wilson, well hasn’t really been around long enough but he’s looking pretty good. Started like a house on fire but has played less than half a season.
Caminiti, starting behind the 8 ball as a rookie, but I think he’s on the right track. Still very young. Second year only.

I’d rather Ross than any one of the previous coaches we’ve had…since Ross.

.

Lyon got this mob into the finals last year. We played a red hot GWS at the MCG (in front of 70,000 Sainters) who blew us away 3 times during the game and we kept fighting back to lose by 24 points.

A brilliant coaching performance with what he had. Sometimes forgotten.

This year, Lyon has played lots of kids and is clearly trying to turn the list over as we transition. We are competitive but unable to beat the big boys. Not unexpected when playing more younger players.

A fair criticism is that our style of play is breaking down forward of centre and we have played real ugly. Terrible to watch. Scoring has dried up. As a supporter it can be terribly disheartening. Even when we win like last week.

But Lyon seems to be raising professional standards and IMO he’s the best coach we’ve had since he left us in 2011. Defensively, he has us unbelievably well organised with what he has at his disposal.

Realistically we are a couple of close losses from being on the fringes of the 8, but some of our close losses have flattered us (eg. PA). That is a reasonable criticism to make. We aren’t as close as the results may suggest.

Overall, it would be utter madness to do anything but to back Lyon in for 4 years. Let’s give him time to take ownership of a transitioned list. We live too much in the “now” and lose sight of the bigger picture in the future.

A voice of considered reason is St Neil. :whitecheck:

Have some faith. I think RTB will tweak a couple of elements this off-season, if he's not already. Either way the whole Club is committed to this path now, shitting the bed at this juncture would be the worst option. I think we'll start to see a lot of things click and next season, a totally different outfit. I think the assistants need to be refreshed, if he can be ruthless in some areas that attitude has to extend to the assistants. I compare it to Roos at Melbourne, but I honestly think we're not as far away as many would think. Next year could have shades of 2009 if everything falls into place. Got to start setting the pieces now though, and getting that forward line right. Madness not to be playing Sharman in there week in week out in my opinion, need to know if he's up to it or if we need to find another foil for King. Would also like to see Heath get a run this year, as well as Arie.

I 100% have faith in Ross Lyon.
I believe he is building us from the ground up on the run and he’s doing the best with what he has to work with.
Standards are up, structures are drilled and high performance is demanded.
Kids are coming through and the list is being turned over and as ugly as it is I think having a defensive mindset will help the kids develop into being a finely tuned finals team in the future.
I have no doubt Ross is working to a plan and the wheels are in motion to becoming a contender again.

I reckon if you talk to any Geelong players from the Bomber Thompson era or Sydney players from the Horse era, they'll tell you that Lyon is creating a flint hard outfit and they'd back him 100% and could probably tell you he's doing exactly what it takes to sustain competitive football at the highest level. Something we've sorely lacked for too long

But the thing is we’ve been horrible to watch for the last 10 years..

2020 and 2023 were exceptions..

Give him a year to build the midfield, then judge. What can you do with a bottom 2 midfield realistically? North has a bette midfield than us, has a master coach and is still getting belted every 2nd week.

I know it’s a long time but I think Ross will be here for a minimum of 8 years. He’s not some untried assistant, we’ve basically become the Ross Lyon FC. He’s years away from being under any sort of pressure.

If we ever do get to a grand final again we all know we’ll be up by a point with under a minute left, the ball will be in the D50 and we’ll be holding on for dear life. We’re just going to have to accept that’s Ross’ DNA.

Last 20 minutes. Starts the break down of us.

Maybe include facts in a discussion.

Backs what ALOT of posters have been saying and removes a lot of the emotional myths about the Ross game plan.
That’s just a picture stav, so pretty useless in a fact finding sense… give us a gist bud.

Also a discussion doesn’t need facts, most threads are just opinion.

The discussion is about Ross and his performance as coach.

You said “jungle drums” are beating. 😂

There is nothing of the sort and when you apply facts about what he is doing. It starts to considerably weaken the argument that he is doing a poor job.

The facts say we match up statistically and visually with the swans. It even highlights the point we break down and they excel (execution of inside 50s and degree of difficulty of those kicks we attempt v them) - which has been explained by multiple posters.

All relevant when discussing Ross and his performance As coach.

Maybe those jungle drums are just those toy monkeys in your head?

No doubt now that some of our players played better under Ratten (not saying he was a great coach), and I would say that if they had honoured his contract extension he may have even had us a few rungs up the ladder. Lyon has deficiencies as coach, just like any other, and they are pretty obvious as we try and go back to 2010.

No one more relieved than I am to hear that the facts say we match up statistically and visually with the swans.

Which facts?

Exhibit A (visually identically matched)
