Autopsy Round 1, 2018: Hawthorn defeats Collingwood

alright. Round 1. Most teams had fade outs, momentum swings. We weathered it and hit back on the scoreboard in the last. Something we definitely could not do last year. Plenty to be happy about -
Cyril will get better
Burgoyne forward was great. What he might have lost (Which seems to be nothing) over the years, he makes up for in out and out craftiness
Impey will get better
JOM will get better
Bruest looked good again and is apparently pain free for the first time in 3 years
Birchall would be a very welcome addition. He gives us a lot structurally.
Duryea has to be on last legs at the moment. We still have Glass and Morrison waiting in the wings so he will need to lift
Brand to come back in also
Plenty to get excited about. We need to be sitting well ahead of the ledger by the midpoint of the season this year. young guys will tire if we are chasing our tail.

Both a positive and a negative but we still don't kick many crafted/traditional/simple goals. What I mean is we kick goals by pressuring the opposition or winning the bunfight (pinball) in our forward line, etc. Not many from players getting hit up on the lead, midfilder dropping into the hole, etc. My only issue with this is that teams better than Collingwood will absorb the pressure/maintain composure better, meaning fewer goals and leaving our backline vulnerable

Good post all round but this absolutely. With such good forwards and still being a reasonably good ball use team, we should definitely be able to generate more 'Dunstall goals'. Lead, mark, goal. Centre bounce.

Reckon we start winning more consistently and cleanly in the middle and our setup will miraculously allow leading goals to be kicked

Having Sicily and TOB in the backline gives us an 2 instant options for kickouts that are very good at contested marking.

Interesting point, I recall Sicily kicked out from full back once and I thought to myself, he should be on the end of the kick or presenting.
Not the one kicking from a behind (yes, he can kick the ball a very long way).
As you say, if TOB (concrete hands to some) and McEvoy are on either flank then this is a none issue.

It's nice to win and have no one talking about us.

I skimmed The Age earlier and saw one tiny little article, buried at the bottom in the middle of the sport section, about Jaeger playing well.
Much nicer than last year with all the commotion, after he got injured, about it being THE WORST TRADE OF ALL TIME.

You're dead right -- no one is talking about us.

Whateley said, under his breath, that we looked "ominous" during his SEN convo with Quartermain, but it was the ol' 'Hawks don't exist in this dojo' on "AFL 360" and "On the Couch".

Slobbo cited Mitchell's world-record haul in his Herald Pun column, but I'm pretty sure that was the only media mention of note.

What gives?

Our biggest weakness is run and overlap from half back. It's been non existent for at least 18 months, no Birchall doesn't help hence why Burto has gone down back to provide a bit of run and carry and Isaac mostly sweeping from HB to give us run instead of just kicking it long all the time!! We targeted Impey for that reason but if we're stuck in our back half against strong sides than I'm expecting Cyril/poppy to spend some time across HB during some games.
Our mids or FRWDS are not the problem it's just that our smaller FRWDS are made to push right up the ground to get the ball moving with leg speed and clever movement. This is why we seem to drop off from contests from time to time... Need run from the back half and that's where Glass must come in to replace led foot Duryea.

We played the pies
Gerard may be a little less effusive about his beloved cats should we win on the weekend

I think it's pretty obvious from where he's been playing that we didn't target Impey for that reason and if we had found it as big of an issue we would have tried to get someone to fill that post.

Morrison and Glass will get games eventually, overlap run issue solved.

It's round one and we played a poor Collingwood side who were missing several starters (having said that I'd prefer Birchall to all of them). No point getting ahead of ourselves when Geelong, Richmond and Melbourne are coming up

I see everyone potting Collingwood now, but leading in to the season a heap of people (mainly the media) were talking them up as a finals chance. I never rated them and thought they were a bottom 6 team, but a lot of people expected them to improve and now we have beaten them all of a sudden they are a shit team and beating them means nothing.

We will find out Easter Monday where we stand and the Pies will have already played GWS.

I know a lot of praise has rightly come for Tom and Jaeger and Cyril

BUT

Shaun Burgoyne!?!?!? As a forward, given his natural football smarts and his ability in a crisis, his calm under pressure - the way he played it didn't look like a guy going into his last year.

people write stuff like silk was silk but I think we as fans take this for granted far too often.

Silk is extraordinary

I just keep assuming he will retire this year but he might not. Looks just as good as ever

Anyone else hear Buckley write toms possessions off again this morning on SEN

He was also talking about the “cheating” and how it’s not something he would engage in although in his earlier days he was a “win at all costs man” and would of done anything to win. He spoke about Maynard and being fined for faking and when he watched the review said “you surely aren’t going to challenge that” because he said that the doctors had lodged a report after the game that he had scratches to the neck and whiplash from the incident. I thought wtf - if that’s not a form of cheating what is and imagine how often it happens - shouldn’t be but was genuinely shocked

I think we're all just too used to it.

In a round-about way, he’s kinda right.

He’s kinda said that Mitchell had 54, was involved in 9 scoring chains etc., but wasn’t the cause for the result. That’s saying, even without Mitchell, we’d have won anyway. I agree - if Mitch had missed & Worpel played, I still reckon we’d have won. Not by as much or as well, but still a win.

In saying that, I reckon he was trying to play a subtle snub to Mitch with the way he said it - not to pay the rest of our team a compliment. So... still a di**head!

Can't understand how he can compare their 19 last quarter inside fifties to our nine with Toms 17 touches without elaborating. How many of Tom's 17 touches were repelling their inside fifties, maybe 4 or 5?

So, once again Bucks' opens his mouth without giving much thought to what comes out. Way to go Nathan, please take Eddie with you on your way out.:)
Hopefully they both never leave Collingwood, his coaching tenure has been great for the rest of the comp. He can bag Tommy all he wants as long as they keep losing and allowing Tommy to set records.

Our rebuild of this side is remarkable. It’s only in its second year and we are a 5-8 side. Amazing.

The players were absolutely out on their feet in the last quarter. Part of our ganeplan means we zone back really hard and it means our forwards need to be efficient. My only concern is Roughy and Shoey and we’re a gun midfielder short in rotations. Burgers and Rioli can’t go in there much anymore.

I have said all preseason we will make finals on the back of our master coach and hopefully win win, but we need a few more players to be ready for the flags again. We will get them and I see another era coming in this team. In order a gun forward, midfielder and rebounding Gibbo type defender. I say this because I see Sicily ending up forward, he’s just too good not to end up there.
People getting onboard yet.

Some of us never got off.
The hysteria on this board is ridiculous.
Sure we got beaten and badly by Gold coast but the reason was purely mental.

They were motivated, we were apathetic.

We have issues I agree but no insurmountable ones.
Our list is just filled with champions that are playing like shit.
Stratton
Bruest
Gunston
Rioli
Puopolo
Smith
Birchall
Shiels
Roughead
Frawley
Are all two or three and four time premiership players in the prime of their football careers who are having average to woeful games atm.
They have not lost their ability to play football.
Hodge, Gibson and Burgoyne might be very near the end and the new blokes haven't gelled yet but it is the ten players I mentioned earlier who are the makers or breakers for us.
Remember we were five goals up on the competition leader early in last weeks game.
Its all between the ears.

Some of us never got off.
Yeah but you’re not who I’m talking about I always like your posts

You have no idea how much shit I copped

I knew we’d so well ... we won’t win the flag as I’ve always said, but we are like 2007, we are rebuilding nicely
