FF: Gollant - Thilthorpe - Keays
HF: McHenry - Fogerty - Sloane

C: Seedsman - Crouch - Sholl
R: O'Brien - Laird - Schoenberg

HB: Milera - McAsey - Smith
FB: Jones - Butts - Doedee

RES: Cook, Hately, Brown, Pedlar

That's where we stand today - trades and pick 4 might come in, as might Berry and Worrall.

Swap Hately for Berry, and McAsey for Murray, and you've nailed it.

Neither are close to selection at the moment, unfortunately.

You could do Berry for Hately - I'm starting to get a bit concerned about Berry but happy to acknowledge that he missed an entire year of development and it's a long year.

I'd play Frampton before Murray, but that's maybe me just being disagreeable. I'm hoping they give McAsey first bite at it and encourage him to really intercept.

Yeah, it's likely an overreaction to be concerned about Berry at this point in time. A good preseason and the accumulation will come, which is probably the main thing holding him back at this point. Jack Steele is probably a good comparative player in that regard who didn't find that accumulation until year 3. That said, if you're starting to get concerned about Berry, you're probably at the point you're delisting Hately.

Nah, Murray is both a step up now, and will absolutely wreck Frampton as a defensive prospect in a year if he stayed healthy. There is a genuine chance that Nicks ceiling is the equivalent to Butts as a defender, seeing how well he handled 2021 considering he too missed a year of football in 2020, on top of starting preseason late.

Best not to judge Berry from his possession count. At least through a decent chunk of this season his defensive numbers were amongst the best. He had an excellent first year.

The type of player who will be able to have a significant impact on the result with 15 possessions, 12 contested, and 18 tackles

Hately gets lots of uncontested possessions and uses it poorly. He does nothing else at this stage. Would take a massive pivot in what he’s doing to become a helpful AFL footballer.

Very disappointed if we picked Hately ahead of Berry.

Berry for Hately? Frampton for Murray? What kind of bizarro world are you living in?

If Billy continues to work on his defensive craft and show more of what we saw, he becomes a solid depth option.

But not ahead of Murray

Best round 1 team from our current squad:
Brown Butts Doedee
Smith Murray Jones
Seedsman Laird Sloane
Gollant Thilthorpe Cook
McAdam/Small fwd trade? Fogarty Berry

ROB Schoenberg Keays

McHenry Hinge Crouch Milera/Pick 4?

Trades I hope we make:
Dawson : Future first 2022.
An elite small forward?

Team has a fairly good blend of experience with:
Brown, Doedee, Smith, Seedsman, Sloane, Laird, McAdam, ROB, Keays, Crouch, Milera, Dawson?.
Combined with the youth of:
Thilthorpe, Jones, Schoenberg, Gollant, Cook, Butts, Murray, Berry, Fogarty, McHenry,

If Kelly goes, I would be curious to see us go with a backline of Butts, Murray, Frampton and Doedee, basically have Doedee move to the Kelly role and Frampton into Doedee's. Have the lockdown and interception quite strong but maybe a little top heavy. Frampton still has a lot to prove but thought his two games as a defender were reasonable and there might be something to work with there.

Milera goes back into defence IMO.

Hamill. Butts. McPherson
Milera. Murray. Doedee

I'd suggest Worrell replaces one of Frampton/Murray if we were going in with that much height

Personally, I thought Murray got worse as the year went on, not better. I think Billy has all the physical tools to be an absolute beast as a key defender.

BUT Billy might also just be a big lug as well.

You reckon he got worse ??

That would be a very empty hill you're standing on I reckon.

Brown - Butts - Doedee

Jones

Hamill wing or SANFL. McPherson SANFL unless Brown is injured

Like this... though would consider Smith off a wing too at times.

Hopefully Worrell gets games too.

+1. I was quite critical of Murray (probably more than I should’ve been) in the first half of the year, but had little to nothing to complain about in the second half

Reckon the fact he was dropped for R23 is creating a few false memories

I don’t get the ‘McPherson SANFL unless Brown is injured’ crowd at all. They really aren’t the same type of player
Because after round 8 this year the only time McPherson was able to get a game was when Brown was injured.

Dropped and brought back twice in step with Brown's injuries

Might all depend on whether he gets a decent pre season in.

MacPherson will probably rotate through the sub role

He played his best footy right before that concussion which was later in the year. I was pretty cold on him initially but I really started to see his potential in the latter part of the season.
Same for me.

I think I forgot that just because he came to us after the drafts, that he's still a kid and has a lot of learning to do.
