I'm terrified that we rate Frampton
As a forward he's done but if someone like Liam Jones can make it as a pretty sound defender, is it beyond Frampton? I haven't seen his form at SANFL level as a defender (although I think he had one big game late towards the end of the season as an intercept defender) but I think the two he played at AFL level he easily held his own. For a guy who has spent all his career as a forward, I think he transitioned down back pretty easily and I'm willing to give him one more crack before putting him in the discard pile.

Feel like he's very likely to back himself in the contest or leave the contest and read the play over some of the other guys and could prove very useful - those intercept defenders are gold against us. Doedee does this too for that matter but not sure there's a cap on this as if we push him to the Kelly position instead, this gives him even more room to roam.

I think at the end of the day, my previous suggestion is too top heavy but the late season position change has given me some hope that there might be a redeemable player in Frampton if required.

Might all depend on whether he gets a decent pre season in.

MacPherson will probably rotate through the sub role
Is it Mcpherson or Macpherson?

I thought he finished off the season really well after doing a pretty good potato impression for the first half of the year. He is one of our few players that regularly hits targets inside 50.

Yeah i think he did quite well after coming back. Coaches seem to like what he brings as well

Personally, I'm with you and would really like to see us give the Butts/Murray/Frampton combo a go, especially now Kelly is confirmed as leaving.

I'd really love to see us install Billy in as that 3rd tall, 200cm road block, in a similar mould to Aliir at Port. Intercept and then rebound is just so important in the modern day game. Billy's shown, albeit in a relatively small sample size, that he has the capicty to read the play really well as a defender, but then he's also got the size, athleticism and footskills to be a real point of difference in the role. Billy's biggest challenge is staying out of his own head. Now, i was one of those more sceptical about Billy in defence when it was mooted earlier in the year and had him written off half way through the season, he's convinced me though.

You mention that it may be too tall, but then you look at Port who run with Jonas, Aliir, Burton and McKenzie/Clurey, with Aliir and Burton playing more that intercept/rebound roles. Melbourne run with May, Petty and Lever. The great thing about Butts, Murray and Frampton is they are all quite to extremely athletic and mobile for their size. They are also all solid, to very good kicks of the footy. There will be no Kelly/Talia chipping the ball sideways at all costs.

The other benefit of this, is it takes Doedee away from the 3rd tall role. I'd much rather see him minding the lesser forwards, rather than see him regularly line up against the 195cm+ monsters he currently does on a regular basis. This especially becomes the case in 1-2 years when he's our next captain.

It'll be an unpopular opinion with many here, but that's my thoughts on what we should be trialling.

Very much seemed to cop the 2nd year blues. Went from being a "composed beyond his years" type player in 2020, to one who was regularly fumbling, miskicking the footy and getting caught in the wrong position. Did seem to settle a bit, no doubt that 2022 will be make or break for him, his role is not one we're lacking options for.

Well it won't be Jake Kelly

And it could be Jordan Dawson

Dawson and Rankine traded in. Draft Hobbs.

Wavered between him and Brown but figured Brown gets one more shot. Also didn’t want to pick Rowe but didn‘t see any alternative but I did wonder whether Hamill could be a fast, fierce tackling small forward at a pinch.
Brown was struggling. Hamill imo is the better choice. I like the potential side especially if we get Burgess and his program. Is there a place for Dawson?

It’s simply the off-season hope already building but I’m starting to see a finals ready side taking shape for 2023.

Adding Dawson, Rankine and Maynard (free agent next year) for season 2023 and there’s some serious talent there.

A lot of good pieces without much that’s outstanding yet

We need Thilthorpe and Fogarty to ‘make it’ as 40+ goal kickers, and desperately require Shoenberg, Pedlar and this year’s pick 4 to become elite midfielders.

Milera fulfilling his 2018 promise would be damn handy too.

That is a good side I like it, also would be a good get if we get Hobbs.

Lol, of course Dawson has a place in our best 22 (if we get him).

I love this outlook, but a lot has to happen first.

I don't think Thilthorpe will have a break out next year, it will be tough going on our forward line for one more year.

You are bang on about role players though, and so much depends on our back line as good opposition will still beat our midfield at least 60% in clearances.

If our offensive tilts come out of the defensive pressure/ turnovers then with our improved outside ball movement (Dawson Milera from Lynch MacKay) then at least Fogarty will be able to lead into the 50m line.

Thilthorpe will be manned up tightly and may break games in bursts but I suspect will need time up the field too get into games.

With Gollant the third tall hopefully he can find consistency along with McAdam, but our smalls are a massive gap.

Hopefully Rowe can start the way he did last year with a better preseason, but we definitely have a Pickett/ Weightman/ Stengle/ Rankine/ Josh Rachele sized hole in our forward line.

I haven't mentioned the midfield except that we will be beaten, lots of work to do here.
